So alot of the script germinated from Natalie Portman's portrayal. For instance, apparently she couldn't cry on queue during the audition, but did manage to weep during her audition when the little brother's murder is mentioned. Also, the plot point about Matilda quitting smoking, and that she never kills anyone on screen, were concessions made to Natalie Portman's parents after she was offered the role. So even though the script existed in some form before Natalie joined the production (in fact, the script and role was a birthday gift from Luc Besson to Jean Reno) a lot of the script took shape around Natalie Portman herself.
By the way, Leon is my favorite movie. Obviously the material is very morally challenging, but each time I have seen the movie I appreciate it even more. Thank you for watching and sharing with us!
..one band aid in each arm..
I'm getting phantom pains in my shoulders from your bandaids.
La Femme Nikita (film)1990 next please its also with Leon.
Called simply Leon in the UK.
One of Gary Oldman's best performances. Absolutely iconic.
Yes, everyone loves his creepy performance here. EEEEEEEEVERRRRYYYYONNEEEEEE
Little known fact: Gary Oldman is one week younger than Gary Numan.
FACTSSSSS. This man plays the villian too well. It is scary
Not my favorite of his. But it's memorable.
Sorry but it's Gary, not Grary... I feel concerned. :)
Stansfield screaming, "Everyone," is in my top 5 Gary Oldman moments.
"MY NAME IS VIKTOR R-R-REZNOV, AND I WILL HAVE MY R-R-REVENGE!"
Gary Oldman Friends episode.👍🏻
Very memeable
just don't ever go looking for "The.Gif"
I heard that there was sound recording problems. He was saying "Everyone" a bit too softly. So just to f+ck with the sound guy he screamed it!! And the used it.
Not everyone gets this film.... Mary got it at the door scene. Bravo. Its a masterpiece.
You mean not EVERYONE 😊
@@alfredthegreat9543 Nah, not EVERYONE!
Best moment is Matilda at Leon's door. Camera stays on Natalie the whole time and doesn't cut away to a hand opening the door. Just the golden light that hits her that tells us it's been opened.
One of my favourite movies and an amazing feelgood movie.
Completely agree I'll always remember my 1st watch thinking "OH Hell No " while waiting for that door to open
Absolutely. That said it seems to me that every single scene of this movie is the best moment. The perfect movie.
It is a beautifully constructed scene. I wonder if it was inspired by anything from earlier in cinema? Pixar utilized a similar scene construction at the end of Monsters, Inc.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE that you get the fundamental of Mathilda's dysfunction and how it (mis)informs her perspective on what love is to her
I'm so glad you watched this film without knowing anything about it. It's one of my all-time favourite films, yes, very uncomfortable at times, but truly memorable 😊
Deals with real topics, really well. Matilida is so confused and Leon is so lost. They ultimately heal each other. Excellent.
Its more uncomfortable when you learn about the director's past relationships, and why he allegedly wrote this movie.
Absolutely made you feel uncomfortable at times, but that is the sign of a good film, one that takes you out of your comfort zone, takes your emotions for a scary ride. Natalie Portman's best ever performance. Just outstanding !
@@Dinotk421not really
@@アキコ2003so u think it's ok for a grown man to date a minor?🤡
Her acting in that scene when she was begging to be let in is so iconic. You can feel her fear and panic. Brilliant
Matilda being bathed in light as he opens the door it a great example of visual story telling!
Absolutely! She conveys so much emotion without saying a word! That's acting!
I've read people calling things iconic at least 10 times just today.
@@SamBorgmanit's an extremely overused term these days. Everything is iconic to someone.
People talk about Gary Oldman's performance, but Natalie Portman's was incredible too especially considering how young she was being able to convey those feelings through her acting shows professionalism.
One of my favorite movies. A lot of fuss is made about about Matilda's infatuation with Leon but honestly it's not unheard of for a 13 year old girl to have a crush on an older man, especially considering he's probably the only man who ever showed her genuine compassion. Leon to his credit never reciprocated her advances. Just a great movie.
Which is all thanks to Reno, he went off script and and acted the role of Leon as if he were a little slow to make it less uncomfortable to not only us the viewer but for him himself.
Well that's at least true in the final version... The uncut says another story about the relationship of this two. The history about Luc Besson is very unclear as well (I think he is a great director, and for having met him once or twice when younger, he is a nice guy with people, but I can't say he is great when it's come about relationship)
I think when Leon says I love you it's just to comfort her, he knew he was going to die pretty soon
@@TheAyme83 their is no uncut their's two version there is the normal version and international version. Mary watched the international version believe me I watch both version
@@TheAyme83 Mary just saw the "final" version
The acting in this one is so good, the action is so good, it's one of those gems.
Leon's actor is French and I love his roles~
Jean Reno. Also great in Ronin with Robert DeNiro, among a stacked cast.
I can't remember what I first saw him in but he was playing a badass soldier type and sold his role perfectly. Made me want to be professional killer when I grew up. I'm not btw lol@@Ernwaldo

Wasabi (2001)
Juan Moreno y Herrera-Jiménez , Jean Reno ,he is undoubtedly a French actor... but not too much.🙃
Agreed. In fact I still think this is one of Gary Oldman's and Natalie Portman's finest performances.
He sleeps sitting in the chair to be on constant alert in case someone comes after him. The bed probably came with the apartment.
Existence of the bed was somehow the most important mystery 🙄
A person that invests a lifetime making enemies will sleep in 4 locations and the bed is not one of them as it is the first place they are expected to be from 21:00 - 06:00 and a chair that reclines to a zero gravity position of 127 degrees is often more comfortable than any bed.
@@SamBorgman well do you know of any appartment without one ? Even if you don't use it you rent an appartment there's necessarily one
@@SamBorgman obviously the bed came with the apartment, and even if it dint, leon would b smart enough to buy 1 bed for the apartment to look normal and not suspicious
"Leon" was the international release, "the Professional" was the US edit
This version has scenes that weren’t in US theatrical release. Is this the original European edit? Or a post theatrical “director’s cut” edit? Just curious if anyone knows.
@@GentleGiantJason This is the original international edit; the US edit removes many of the more emotionally "intimate" scenes.
According to IMDb, it also went by "The Professional" in several countries besides the U.S., including Australia, India and Spain. Which cut it was isn't clear, but I'm guessing that it was the U.S. cut. Nowadays, that cut is hard to find and the only one widely available appears to be the international version ("Leon"), which has been renamed to "Leon the Professional," presumably so that moviegoers who know it by "The Professional" can better recognize it.
@@GentleGiantJason This version that Mary viewed is the 1996 international re-release that was titled “Léon: Version Integrale” when it debuted in France and later retitled “Léon The Professional (Uncut International Version). I have this on DVD. The original theatrical release was the same, no matter where it was screened, just different names. “Léon” when it debuted in 1994 in France, but renamed “The Professional” for the American market.
I saw it as The Professional, anything else is extraneous.
"eastern european accent" Oh my can't get more french than Jean such a boss !

Yep, had to do a lot of scrubbing to get my security deposit back, haha.
Imagine her being 25ish(?) and don't know such things.
Or is it just me that is old that instantly remembers such things.
Another great performance from Jean Reno is in the movie "Ronin." Check out his whole catalogue; he's a French national treasure.
Makes me sad that Ronin is so unknown these days. It's an excellent film.
Great film; stacked cast. Bought the DVD when it came out. One of the greatest car chase scenes ever filmed.
Also a little of Spain...Juan Moreno and Herrera-Jiménez, son of Andalusians.
Ronin is one of my favorite movies Very much an under the radar movie, I think everyone should see it at least once.
I always thought of Ronin as a Leon sequel. (Alternate universe o'course.)
9:38 "You don't like Beethoven." This monologue about Beethoven is an Easter egg. _Léon_ was released in November 1994. Two months later, Gary Oldman starred as Beethoven in _Immortal Beloved._

Fun fact:
the escort is played by Maïwenn Le Besco, who you might remember as Diva Plavalaguna(the blue alien lady) in Fifth Element ;D
She was also Besson's wife whom he started dating when she was 15 and he was 30, then they got married and had their first child when she was 16. She also claims this movie was based on their relationship. But thanks to Portman's parents and Reno who protested, the script was changed to leave out the original sexual relationship between Leon and Mathilda.
Besson also dumped her for wife #3, Milla Jovovich during the filming of “The Fifth Element”. That only lasted a couple of years and he’s since moved on to wife #4.
@ofthenearfuture Yeah that's true
@@ShreveportJoe And she went for Paaul W.S Anderson

People have been asking Luc Besson for a sequel involving Mathilda the Professional now that Natalie Portman is all grown up. Natalie Portman has said she's up for it.
There was a sequel written titled "Mathilda", but it was used for another film called "Columbiana", and is not a sequel to Leon.
Kinda defeats the point though...
will she then find a 10 boi who flirt with her? lol
comeon !! it is luc besson
She's aged out for Besson
@@Belnick6666 Yes, his name was Anakin, lol!
Only Gary Oldman can ham up a delivery THAT much and still have it seem completely 100% in-character for the role he's playing. Unbelievable talent at making you truly believe in a character, and the supporting cast deserve a lot of credit helping him sell it by convincingly showing even his allies being in terror of him. One of the best villains in cinema IMO. (Ma-Ma from Dredd is another great example of completely chillingly terrifyingly believable.)
No idea why, but "this is from...Matilda" is a line that runs through my head like once a month. Haven't seen this movie in like 20 years.
Luc Besson became one of my favorite directors when I saw the film "la femme Nikita" in 1991. What's cool is that Jean Reno plays a cleaner in that one too.
My 3 favorite Luc Besson films are Leon, La Femme Nikita, and The Fifth Element.
I've heard that "The Big Blue" is amazing, but I still haven't seen it yet.
I would add Arthur and the Invisibles as well.
I would add Subway, with Jean Reno as the drummer. Most of his films alsso has great music by Éric Serra.
I love the Big Blue. It's more of a romantic drama with some humor. The visuals to this movie are breathtaking, especially for back then. Reno's chracter is a fun watch throughout the film. :)
Yes, I love Subway too!
Besson has said he wrote Leon as a spinoff of Nikita because he liked Reno and his character.
The Professional was John Wick before John Wick. Such an amazing movie.

The actor who played Benny, Keith Glascoe, was a firefighter and he died in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001. Keith was a true hero. RIP
So many people cringe out over her love for Leon, but it was simply a crush. Young people have crushes on their heroes all the time.
that's not all it was in the script lol
@@ElmStReactionsExactly. Doesn’t bother me personally, but Luc Besson, and this film in particular, have been criticized for sexualization of young women. The escort at the beginning was played by his real life partner at the time who was a minor when they met.
@@ElmStReactionsHe’s still right. I’m a Middle School teacher and I’ve had my share of crushes from my students. Trust me, given the opportunity, most of them would happily cross that red line. The group Police once made a song called “Don’t Stand so Close to Me” about this very thing. 😅
Also, as a child of abuse, she likely has unhealthy emotional reactions to things. This is the first kind person she's really known so it would make sense that she would be inappropriate with him, but thankfully, he doesn't reciprocate.
It’s interesting how social mores change over the years. It wasn’t too long ago when a girl could get married and have children around 14. Loretta Lynn is a good example.
In her early roles, Portman invariably displayed maturity and/or wisdom beyond her years.
One need only check out her other works as a teen actress: Heat (1995), Everyone Says I Love You (1996), Beautiful Girls (1996), Mars Attacks (1996), Anywhere But Here (1999), and of course, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
Some great performances. You can throw Garden State in that mix as well.
This movie makes you feel all of the feels! The characters pull out extreme feelings. The people that are good, you love. The people that are bad, you almost want to end them yourself. It's like they took every emotion and dialed it up to 11.
Wasabi (2001), again from Luc Besson and with Jean Reno, is another good one.
True, but way more lighthearted and comedic.
Especially the golf range scene or him protecting his daughter at the mall
Love that movie so much
Jean Reno (Leon), is very famous in Europe, and especially in France (though he is Spanish to begin with) where he got his major roles, whether it's in Luc Besson's movies (Subway, Le Grand Bleu, Nikita, Léon), or with other directors and in other genres. He did a handful of comedies : Les Visiteurs (1993), L'Opération Corned Beef (1991), Wasabi (2001)... He also did voice acting for french versions, dubbing Mufasa in The Lion King, or Porco Rosso in the eponymous movie form the Ghibli Studios.
His international career count movies like French Kiss (1995), Mission: Impossible (1996), Godzilla (1998), Da Vinci Code (2006)...
One of his "under the radar" movies, which I have a soft spot for is Avis de Mistral (2014), a slice of life where he plays a gruff grandfather having to take care of his grandchildren for a summer.
This is the full movie. There’s a cut just called The Professional that takes out the vast majority of Mathilda’s “love” stuff and that’s the one I saw growing up. Because of that they had to cut soooo much important story and character development. I get why they did it, kind of. I think audiences are mature enough to understand that a child from a home like hers wouldn’t understand what love is. Or that there’s a difference between feeling safe and cared for and love. Really just the difference between sexual love and every other kind.
It was definitely a risk on the filmmakers’ part, but it’s a complicated story about a lot of raw emotions, and that’s the point.
The American edit cuts out a lot of the "relationship" but it also cuts out the scenes of her going out on hits with him as well. Without those scenes she goes from firing a paintball at a jogger in the park to walking into the DEA building with a gun and no explanation of why she thought she could handle it. There needs to be an in-between edit that includes the training but maybe leaves out some of the other.
@@krbkrbkrbkrbkrbI know! When I saw the full one it definitely changed how I viewed her character which, surprise!, means they cut really important stuff.
I agree that for American sensibilities it would be nice to have something that keeps that character progression, because the full cut gets too much (in my opinion) unwarranted criticism which overshadows the rest of the brilliance. But… such is a French film vs an American audience, which I say as an American haha
@@krbkrbkrbkrbkrb Technically speaking, there is/was not an “American edit” as you called it. The original theatrical edit was the same no matter where it was screened. Some confusion may have occurred when it debuted in France in 1994 as “Léon,” but renamed “The Professional” for the American market. Again, same content. I own the special DVD edition of this version that Mary Cherry viewed. It is the 1996 international re-release with the additional footage. When it was first screened in France it was titled, “Léon: Version Integrale.” It has since been renamed (at least on my DVD packaging) “Léon The Professional (Uncut International Version). All this info is from the insert included.
This film was so damm good, I had to watch it twice even though it was so heart breaking. Gary Oldman was so good as he always is.
Yes, she gets it! Always glad to see a reactor (one of few) who actually gets the dynamic between Leon and Mathilda. She has been abused, she doesn't really know any better and develops a crush ... and that's about it, nothing really creepy going on at any time, and especially nothing coming from Leon. Uncomfortable?? Hell yes, but that's all intentional, 2 broken people who don't know how to express themselves learning to do so will have awkward and uncomfortable situations, but they work it out.
I love this movie, Gary Oldman gives his possibly best villain ever, Jean Reno is incredibly beliveable in his role and what a great first role for Natalie Portman.
100% this. You look at Matilda's upbringing, and the fact that this man rescued her & showed her genuine compassion - a young girl in her circumstance may develop a crush and/or misconstrue her new feelings as romantic. As a young man, I remember having crushes on older adult women. It's a natural thing as part of your growing up.
This is one of my favorite movies. Thank you for reacting to it. "This is from Matilda". One of greatest closing character lines ever
I say this everytime.. This movie is like fine art... It takes you out of your comfort zone.. jolts you into being uncomfortable. Then it hits you with the most powerful acting ever.. Great reaction.
One of my favorite movies! Definitely didn't expect to find this in my feed today
For her first film role, Natalie Portman crushed it like a seasoned veteran.
Q: Who here loves Gary Oldman?
A: "Everyone!!!"
the movie in the theater scene was It's Always Fair Weather (1955 starring Gene Kelly)
Also, a really cool nod in a video game...
In Resident Evil 2 (and remake), Leon has a gun he can upgrade that's called Matilda.
Natalie great actress , some of her best acting in her first movie in my opinion
The best acting! In what movie she was better as in Leon?
Gary Oldman’s “EVERYONE” line was a big focus of the tv ads for this, understandably because Gary was so crazy and magnetic in this movie. If you think about it Mathilda was the adult and Leon was very much like a child
Garry oldman can play anything except someone not unhinged
Winston Churchill?
Jim Gordon
Guildenstern
How about George Smiley in TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY? That movie earned him his first of 3 career Oscar nominations to date (he was 53 when he got his first nom).
Maybe he should have played Willie Wonka!
This movie is a masterpeice
Leon was developmentally challenged so he wasn't necessarily being taken advantage of. Think about it this way, he was a very effective and advanced killer with the mentality of a child with a difficulty learning social skills. The fact that he couldn't read until he was almost forty changes my perspective of his situation and Tony's role in his life. He wasn't concerned because Leon learned to read but because he was worried that Leon was getting a reckless and false confidence after years of Tony making sure he was looked after. He never asked for his money like that because he was satisfied with what he had but the talk about banks is fairly straightforward. Tony knows that Leons money is dirty and needs to be cleaned and held onto. If he gave a woman as Tony thought at that moment she might buy a car and if she doesn't make enough to buy a car she could get audited. This is tieing strings from Leon to the federal government. That's just one example of the many thoughts and concerns that explains Tony's attitude. He also paid for her to go to private school and probably went on to pay for her college tuition and then she probably got a big check with cleaned money from an account that wasn't connected to anything illegal. She probably even could have gone back and became a "cleaner" if she was still determined to do so.
Nothing can negate Tony's clear pain at the death of Leon. Tony probably looked at Leon as a son despite being closer in age to a brother.
36:35 - "The last of us with Joel and Ellie"
Léon: The Professional was an influence for this game, Naughty Dog themselves confirmed it themselves before the release of their game at the 2012 Pax Prime Expo.
And I want to say, it is quite obvious as the evolution of the relationship between the 2 main characters are similar.
Leon and Joel are both grumpy old men with little humanity in them who lead violent lives to survive.
This is due to the fact that they have lost someone dear to them, his girlfriend for Léon, his daughter for Joël.
They both meet a teenage girl with a big mouth who, as the story develops, will directly remind them of the person they lost, his daughter for Joel through his father-daughter dynamic, his girlfriend for Leon through the pseudo-love story between him and Mathilda.
Their relationship is complicated at first, Leon and Joel can't trust a little girl, and they don't let them do anything.
They both refused to let them touch a weapon for example, Leon gives her one to make her leave, but he refuses to let her touch the others.
But the two girls will quickly prove capable and useful, Mathilda when she shoots out the window and then takes care of the hotel employee, Ellie when she kills the guy who was trying to drown Joel and helps him to push the piano for example.
Either way, it ends with a scene where the men teach the girls how to use a sniper rifle, showing that they are now starting to be partners.
In the second half of the story, the two girls are kidnapped by a villain (Stanfields in Leon, David in TLOU), and the two men come to the rescue of their daughters and they hug for the first time. .
The villains are very similar, they're both crazy leaders of a group of men who rule the roost, they both want to kill the girls and they both have an inappropriate gesture towards them (Standfield when he touched Mathilda's lips in the bathroom, David when he touched Ellie's hand in the cell)
The climax of the story is also very similar too, they both have to escape from a building full of soldiers, especially at the end when Leon sees the light at the end of the hall.
It's like Joel seeing the light from the elevator.
It's even clearer when you see an earlier version of the story, Ellie had to escape through an air duct only she could fit through while Joel was stuck with the bad guys... just like Leon (at 21:55 in the video below)
th-cam.com/video/Le6qIz7MjSk/w-d-xo.html
So to sum it up, they're similar characters, with similar personality traits, similar pasts, similar age, they go through similar character arcs following a similar sequence of events...
The influence is evident here.
I have to point out that It wasn't a father/daughter relationship. It's based on Luc Besson's personal life with a younger actress (the first girl in the movie is actually her). I believe they started their relationship when she was 15 (age of consent in france i believe) but they knew each other since she was 12...so....
big yikes, still love the movie tho
Oh, I love this movie... such complex characters and unique storytelling. Wonderful.

I saw this movie on TV when I was 7. It was presented somehow as the directors cut, though it was still edited for tv so not so much blood etc. so I got to see the “cleaning” scenes and the diner scene.
I absolutely fell in love with this movie. When she said Leon was her lover to the hotel guy my eyes BUGGED. I was like “what movie am I watching??” Again I was 7 lol. But now I was hooked and wanted to see what would happen as my experience with movies were mostly Disney princess.
When Leon tells her he loves her and lets her down the chute I was sobbing. It still gets me. I knew as a kid that her and Leon couldn’t work as a couple, knew kids and grown-ups shouldn’t have those types of relationships so it was never an issue me seeing that so young. I know ppl have a lot of issue with the kid and grown up ick, but I think the way that Jean Reno played Leon as very childlike made it not creepy. You knew he wasn’t trying to be that to her.
I love Leon. I fell in love with Leon too.❤ It was such a beautiful movie and so heartbreaking, but bittersweet. I will always recommend it to watch bc it shows two broken ppl patching each other up. Two very unlikely ppl and they clicked.
One last note: I saw a cosplayer at a local convention dressed as Leon and I RAN to catch up to him. When I flagged him down he told me he was bringing his daughter a snack and she was dressed as Matilda! So I followed him to where she was and there she was with the plant and the italian food bag! And then the Leon cosplayer told me to hold out my handand said”From Matilda.” He gives me the key ring!! I was beyond happy🎉

nice work Mary Thanks for the tip about the songs
Really enjoyed that reaction this was one of my favourite films ,after the first 30 minutes I thought you would be devastated at the end.
Gary Oldman absolutely crushes the psychotic villian role. While Jean Reno plays the quite professional fairly well.
This reaction reminded me how much of a masterpiece this film is
This film is a masterpiece and one of my favourites. John Reno, Natalie Portman and Gary Oldman brought their A Game. Especially Oldman, he plays the villain role so well, like Stansfield has to be one of the most vile, evil and corrupt movie villains. Two of my favourite scenes has to be Léon walking into the office and just destroying everyone and saving Mathilda and the bathroom scene. Two completely different scenarios that display good vs evil perfectly
I mean “You will never be *alone* “ and “This is from... Mathilda”
That is just outstanding acting. They really don’t make films like this anymore. This is probably one of the most emotional scenes ever put to screen. It’s the same as a father saying goodbye to his daughter. Léon sacrificing his life for Matilda’s, a girl he only knew for a short time, who he made such a strong bond with is the ultimate act of heroism, bravery and most importantly, love. This film is about love. It also probably one of the greatest revenge moments ever, this left me speechless. This film was flawless from start to finish.
So glad you liked it!!! 💕🍒
Now you need to watch Ghost Dog.
The actress who played the young gal with a blonde wig at the begining of the film, Maiwenn Le Besco, was Luc Besson's second wife and she was 17 years old. She played the blue skinned alien opera singer in The Fifth Element.
Hi Mary!!! A great heartfelt reaction to a good movie. I remember seeing it at the theater. You look fantastic by the way. Aussie..Aussie..Aussie!!!

Amazing! AWESOME movie! The acting was so powerful. Natalie and Jean are so incredible.
One of my most favourite movies. I'm glad you liked it.
It was my first Live Chat, last night. Thank you Mary Cherry, for the tears, and for the joy.
Great reaction, Mary, an awesome movie.
Natalie Portman looking like Eleven from Stranger Things. They both look alike. They can okay Mother and Daughter one day! There should've been a sequel to this with Ms. Portman as Matilda, but it's fine how this ended.
"I like these calm little moments before the storm..."
so cool!
I like how Leon and Stan don’t meet face to face until the third act of the movie. That was just one of the many moments of the film itself that were unpredictable.
definitely one of my favorites, 3 of my favorite actors, jean reno,, gary oldman, and of course natalie portman
This movie strikes so close to home. I used to live in that building. Different floor, but same side facing 23rd street. This was filmed on the top floor. Amazing movie.
