This movie has aged like a fine wine. The game on the PS2 is also really good too. It sucks that Van Helsing never got a sequel because I still want one to this day. League of Extraordinary Gentleman is another fun movie to watch
This movie became the golden standard for how to make Vampires and Werewolves as cool as possible. The Vampires are both regal and beautiful, as well as monstrous and terrifying. And the Werewolf designs and transformations are just perfect.
Flawless designs! updated while still remaining classic, such a shame this is the only movie we got with them, they had all the ingredients of a new monsterverse
Wholesome piece of trivia; the actor who played Dracula and the actress who played his dark-haired bride are married in real life. They met during the filming of this movie:)
Listening to the actor commentary (no Hugh) on the DVD was very enlightening. If one never believed there was a real Hierarchy on film sets, that commentary would show different. They had both respect for and fear of Hugh concerning their careers. Not Jackman's fault but instead just the way it is.
Richard Roxburgh (Dracula), also worked on another horror movie the following year called "Fragile", which also starred the red-headed bride Aleera (Elena Anaya). The blonde bride Marishka (Josie Maran), also played a different Dracula's victim in the music video for "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" from the Backstreet Boys. Lastly, the black-haired bride's (Silvia Colloca) character name is "Verona", which is only written in the credits as her character's name isn't mentioned in the movie.
The scene that always gets me is the end, when Anna dies. That part where Van Helsing looks up at the sky and sees Anna reunited with her family never fails to bring tears to my eyes. And the music for that scene was beautiful.
Yep because you go from being sad for her death to happy that she's with her family. And Van Helsing has friends probably for the first time in his life.
Yes, one of the most bittersweet and beautiful film scenes. The way her soul rises and touches him, you can see her silhouette for a brief moment before ascending. So heartbreaking and comforting.
This was Stephen Sommers' dream project. Ever since he was a kid we wanted to remake old black & white movies about Dracula, Frankenstein and all the Transylvanian stuff. That's why this movie starts in black & white as a tribute. He also directed The Mummy which you should watch as well.
Very cool. Thought he seemed super familiar for some reason in both movies without ever drawing a connection. Thank you for filling a 15 year old hole.
Sommers had a lot of the same actors and bit players appear in several of his movies including Arnold Vosloo, Tom Fisher, Jason Flemyng, Alun Armstrong, and Kevin O'Connor. O'Connor did at least three of Sommer's monster movies and G.I. JOE.
Anna was just a normal human, as were her family members. She said her family had been hunting/killing Dracula's creations for 400 years, but that was spread across nine generations of the family, as said by the cardinal at the Vatican.
Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde was the partial inspiration for Marvel’s the Hulk. Both scientists whose experiments transformed them and awakened a savage persona buried within.
This movie still has some of the best monster designs. It's amazing how frequently other films manage to screw it up, but this film's still look amazing all these years later
I believe the actor who plays Dracula chews more scenery and is more “hammy” than any other actor in film history? And I love every second he’s on screen! Such a good counterpart to Jackman’s Van Helsing. Wish we got a second serving of this wonderfully crazy movie.
Will Kemp, the actor who plays Velkan, come from an impressive ballet dance background, performing with some of the Royal Dance companies of England. I think his grace and training in body movement added a lot to the excellent werewolf transformation scenes.
The soundtrack by Alan Silvestri is a piece of musical genius, so inspiring that *the main theme "Reunited" was used for the opening theme of the Beijing Olympics.*
This movie is why I love monsters, especially Werewolves! And the music, my gawd! It’s amazing! Composed by Alan Silvestri(Avengers, Back to the Future, Predator)
One of my favorite Hugh Jackman movies. It really blew my mind to learn that Robbie Coltrane (AKA Harry Potter's Rubeus Hagrid) did the voice and facial motion capture modeling for Mr. Hyde. I love the brides, the lore of Count Dracula, Van Helsing's werewolf form and the look of Frankenstein's Monster.
The cgi is not so great at times, but to me this movie still has the most badass Werewolf i have ever seen in movies/series. The vampires look great too, Dracula's true form is very menacing. I can't believe people actually hated on this movie.
Shuler Hensley, who played Frankenstein's Creature, had worked with Hugh Jackman already, in a production of "Oklahoma!" in 1998. Jackman played Curly (the romantic lead) and Hensley played Judd (the antagonist). Hensley and Jackman have worked together several times, actually, on stage and film. Hensley would later go on to play a very different version of the Creature- this time as the creation of Frederick Frankenstein (Victor's grandson) in the 2007 Broadway musical adaptation of Mel Brooks' comedy "Young Frankenstein." [You should TOTALLY react to the 1974 classic comedy film "Young Frankenstein!" You'll love it!] Hensley is "only" 6'3" (190 cm) tall, which is kinda' tall, but not like 7' (213 cm) Creature tall. But with costume and big shoes, he fills out a Creature pretty well in this film, and on the stage!
Kevin J. O'Connor (Igor) is a very prolific character actor with almost 60 movies to his credit. There Will be Blood, The Mummy, Lord of Illusions(a favorite), and Steel Magnolias to name a few.
I saw this movie with my dad when it came out, we then had a running joke between us when we’d say Van Helsing as “Van HEEEELLLLSING” lol such a fun movie
So much of this movie was practical stunt work, and there were quite a few injuries. One of the dwergie messed up his abdomen falling on that vat of acid. Frankenstein's Monster's stunt double was knocked out when swinging into that window. This is such a crazy movie.
Perfect movie for Halloween-times. Underrated. At the time peeps justst couldn't understand the campy accents and over-the-top acting for what is was: A real love-letter by the makers and actors to 'classic' horror movies from the 30's up to the Hammer movies. And they did a great job of capturing the over-acted weirdness of the classics.
The production team for this movie genuinely did want to include the Creature from the Black Lagoon to complete the old-school monster lineup but the writing staff couldn’t come up with even a semi-believable way to write it in so it was scrapped. No mention of the Mummy though….for admittedly obvious reasons
Mary, please watch Hansel and Gretel:Witch Hunters starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton. Also if just for yourself just dropped watch Rippy about a 7 foot mutant killer kangaroo in Australia."There is an outbreak in the Outback".
His scene where he explains that he is the one standing there when the monsters return to being men is very powerful and way too short in how it get's glossed over as part of the exposition.
I didn't like the fact that Anna died the first time I saw it, but as I kept watching it, I came to the conclusion that it was actually the perfect happy ending for her. Her entire family had died hunting Dracula, and she had devoted her life to that same purpose. The movie also dropped hints that she would rather be with them in death than continue to live without them, but she couldn't do so until Dracula was dead, or they would all be lost in purgatory forever. In the end, she got to see the fall of Dracula and her family's curse, but didn't have to then live without purpose for decades before her happy family reunion.
I Luv this Movie! We get Dracula, Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde and the Wolfman! Van Helsing takes care of business in this movie! Thanks for sharing Mary Cherry 🍒
After the conversations between Dracula's bride Aleera and Anna Valerious, the thought came to me unbidden "Did those two go to high school together?" because there seemed to be a lot of history between them prior to what we saw in the movie.
@@patrickseidel8625 I am but I’m just stating the fact that like actors and actresses who go from being unknowns to well knowns that’s the same with Hugh Jackman.
The transformation in this movie is ok but the ones from American werewolf in London and The wolf man with Del Toro from 2010 show pain fear and anger during the transformation.
Since Universal made movies about The Mummy, The Wolf Man and Dracula, you’d think Van Helsing would be the next logical step. Which it kinda is. But, after seeing how this flopped so poorly, it actually has a good of a chance as the Dark Universe.
I laugh every time I see this movie cuz Richard Roxburgh (Dracula) plays the Duke in Moulin Rouge and he's such a smarmy, mousy character in that one. The contrast between his performance here and in the other film is hilarious. Great actor!
This movie is so underrated. This was one of Kate Beckinsale's first movie roles. Kate's character Anna was human. I love the way they had all of the old school monsters in this. I have a movie recommendation for you. The League of Extortionary Gentleman.
Ah Van Helsing, action/horror movie that nobody ever talks about. This one is bigtime favorite of mine just because it somehow managed to fit a bunch of the classic horror movie creatures into one movie and make it make sense.
I saw this in theaters when I was 12. I remember thinking how much it reminded me of The Mummy films with Brendan Fraser. Then I found out later it's the same producers
As always Mary Cherry, I love your work. Although, even though there are Vampires and Werewolves and Frankenstein's Monster, this movie doesn't EXACTLY classify as scary. Still...the monsters make it Halloween enough. Anyways great reaction. Lots of fun. Keepnit up, girl. You Rock! PS. I dunno if you know anything about RPGs but in the White Wolf Games, Vampire the Masquerad, and Werewolf the Apocalypse, Vampires and Werewolves are natural enemies, and their bites cause what is called "aggrivated damage" which means their supernatural healing doesn't heal it so easily. It takes time and is one of the ways yhose creatires can be killed, though it's not generally this one hit kill.move as it is depicted in this film. Also, the notion of Vampires and Werewolves being adversaries has been depicted in cinema before via The Underworld movies, in which Kate Beckensale plays a Vampire. Amusing that she wants to slay the Vampires in THIS movie we just watched. Anyways see ya later in another reaction I'm sure.
Great reaction Mary, so glad you liked the movie to me it doesn't matter what critics say, this is one of my favorite movies one of Hugh Jackman's best performances as well as Kate Bekinsale's performance.
Nice reaction, Mary! Van Helsing, as is typical for a Stephen Sommers movie, is definitely a fun film with some heart and nice designs. I saw it for the first time last year and it introduced me to Kate Beckinsale's work. Since you've seen this film, you should also seek out the Mummy movies from the late '90's-'00's (or at least the first two films). Those are what really put Sommers on the map as a blockbuster moviemaker and opened the door for him to make Van Helsing.
The reason for the black and white opening was to pay homage to the original Universal Studios monster pictures. In perhaps the first cinematic crossover series (way before marvel did it ) “Frankenstein meets The Wolfman”, followed by“House of Frankenstein “, and “House of Dracula” where all three characters meet up. Now in what will probably be the craziest suggestion you ever get, watch “Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein “ as the best of the movie monster crossovers. The other three are good but the comedy just makes this one a must watch.
Van Helsing! Nice reaction Mary. Kate Beckinsale form the Underworld films did a good job here. This movie has been said to be silly yet good. I like it. Hugh pulled it off. Other actors who played Van Helsing: Peter Cushing, Edward Van Sloan, Herbert Lom, Walter Ladengast, Laurence Olivier, Anthony Hopkins, Mel Brooks, David Moroni, Rutger Hauer, Keith Reay, Christine Prouty, Jack Gwillim, Peter Fonda, Christopher Plummer, David Carradine, Wallace Shawn (inconceivable), and Mark Topping. I highly suggest The Monster Squad (1987) for next year's Scary Cherry. Also, I suggest Scanners (1981) with Michael Ironside and Screamers (1995) with Robocop's Peter Weller.
KB is my favourite actress. You should really check out serendipity with her and John Cusack it’s just a magical feel good movie. Great cute reactions as always mary cherry 🍒
You need to see "Bram Stoker's "Dracula". Rich in vampire legend and origins. Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder and Gary Oldman, amazing as always, as the infamous Count.
Anna (Kate Beckinsale) did not have long life. She was a normal 20(?)-something descendant of the original guy that made the 'no heaven while Drac lives' vow.

Other actors who played Van Helsing: Peter Cushing, Edward Van Sloan, Herbert Lom, Walter Ladengast, Laurence Olivier, Anthony Hopkins, Mel Brooks, David Moroni, Rutger Hauer, Keith Reay, Christine Prouty, Jack Gwillim, Peter Fonda, Christopher Plummer, David Carradine, Wallace Shawn (inconceivable), and Mark Topping. I highly suggest The Monster Squad (1987) for next year's Scary Cherry. Also, I suggest Scanners (1981) with Michael Ironside and Screamers (1995) with Robocop's Peter Weller.
The actor that played Dracula was the lawyer aligned with the vampires in Blade 2. Friar Carl was Faramir in LOTR and Dilios in 300.
The actor that played Dracula is Richard Roxburgh. The actor that was the familiar lawyer in blade 2 is Karel Roden.
@@TXRager Yep, Richard Roxburgh played the right-hand baddie in MI:2 and Karel Roden played Rasputin in Hellboy
It's not light that vampires can't handle, it's UV rays.
So you're saying they're afraid of getting sunburned? 😛
@@SeedFactoryProject Haha, basically. Sunburn is instant!
They tried to boil the monk in oil--that's when they found out he was a friar. (I'm so so sorry...)
almost like a James Bond film when he’s introducing all the tools and weapons
That's actually where they got the idea!
@ oh dope
KB is my favourite actress. You should really check out serendipity with her and John Cusack it’s just a magical feel good movie. Great cute reactions as always mary cherry 🍒
10:35 The sun is blocked by clouds, giving them enough shade to roam during the day.
You need to see "Bram Stoker's "Dracula". Rich in vampire legend and origins.
Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder and Gary Oldman, amazing as always, as the infamous Count.
really, REALLY ENJOYED your reaction! 👍😁
I enjoyed this movie and wouldve like a sequel for it
I actually got this movie 🎬 🎞 🎥 🎦 📽 and it was awesome and you gotta love Hugh Jackman he's the icon of every other movies 🎬 ❤
Anna (Kate Beckinsale) did not have long life. She was a normal 20(?)-something descendant of the original guy that made the 'no heaven while Drac lives' vow.
