  • Hello, Here's the best way I have found to make copper electroforming solution. Hopefully my past attempts, and failures will lead to your success.
    If you'd like to, Please check out my Etsy shop.
    www.etsy.com/s...
    SUPPLIES LIST:
    --- One large pot to boil water. This must fit at least one gallon. You will not put any chemicals in this pot so regular kitchen pot is fine.
    (I pour the solution back into the gallon water jug when it's finished so a plastic funnel is also a good idea. I got a few from the dollar store. Don't ever use either of these items for food in the future.)
    --- Plastic or glass stirring rod or spoon. No wood or metal. It will ruin the utensil and contaminate the solution.
    --- Plastic or glass Measuring cup. Not metal. You can usually find these at the dollar store as well.
    --- Small medicine cup that can measure MLs (Milliliters). Amazon has them very cheap or take one off a bottle of medicine you don't need it for. Don't use it for anything except making solution again.
    INGREDIENTS LIST: (4 ingredients)
    If you want to skip purchasing all of these separately check out Caswell plating copper electroplating kits. Not sponsored. Not that they know I exist. :P
    ***www.caswellpla...
    ---One gallon (128 oz) of DISTILLED water (Found at any grocery store)
    --- One 2lb (32 oz) tub of Zeps root kill or 2lbs of Copper Sulfate Crystals
    ***Single 2lb - www.homedepot....
    ***4 pack- www.homedepot....
    ***NOTE (This may not be available to ship from your local store, if so change the location of the preferred store.
    --- 2/3 cup (160ml) of Battery/Sulfuric acid. I get this as a battery refill at my local auto parts store. Also, Amazon carries it. Search "Sulfuric acid"
    --- 10 Ml of copper brightener. I love the one from Caswell plating. It's far cheaper then Rio Grand, and works just as well.
    ***www.caswellpla...
    And, That's it. :)
    I hope this helps everyone trying to make their own solution. I know I had a hard time figuring out the right recipe.
    THANK YOU FOR WATCHING!!!!!!!!!

    Hey thanks for making this video it explains everything well. Does the sulfuric acid make your whole house smell like sulfur when mixing it all up?

    • @MadiLush
      @MadiLush  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. No, it has no smell that's I've ever been able to detect. But, I do purposely keep it away from my face. It's dangerous to work with because it looks exactly like water. I always sprinkle some baking soda in the area I was using it. The baking soda will fizz if it hits the acid so you can be sure you didn't spill any.

    Hey I was wondering what was in the little container that you poured in after the battery acid? You didn't mention it in the captions after so not too sure, hope you see this, cheers oh ya and thanks for the video it's helpful!!!

      That is copper brightener. I'm really not sure on a chemical level what it is. After making the initial bath you use only a few drops every day or so. So it will last you a long time.
      You can buy it here. --> www.caswellplating.com/copper-brightener-part-b-4oz.html

    My electroforming is coming out salmon colored, rough, and brittle. Can you please tell me what to do to stop this and get a shiny copper finish?

      Im not an expert by any means, but are you using a brightener? And what power supply are you using?

    Nice tutorial, thanks for sharing! Can you tell me what the copper brightener is for in this case? I feel like that's a dumb question as the answer is probably "to brighten the copper," but I just want a better grasp of the chemistry before attempting this stuff at home. Thanks!

    For the copper brightener do you need part A and part B?

    • @MadiLush
      @MadiLush  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use Caswell's part A when initially making the solution. Then use a few drops of part B as needed to top off the tank.

    @TerraMined 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey there! Thank you so much for posting this video. I ended up getting Part A & B of the brightener. I'm not sure how much of each to put in there. Did you put 10ml of part B? if so how much do I need to add of part A? Thanks again!

    • @MadiLush
      @MadiLush  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. I did 10ml of A in the initial mix. Then after you've been using the solution for a bit and starts to get less shiney you can mix in about 1-2mls to kinda top it off. The brightener needs to be replenished periodically.

    Should consider not doing this in your kitchen... lol other than that and couple safety concerns. Nice video thanks

      I have been hoping to make some how to's and WIP videos soon. I'm just using my camera on my phone at the moment and nothing is very good quality sadly.

      @@MadiLush Thanks for the reply. Any chance if you know if items that have electroforming can be soldiered to other electroformed items? I was wondering if this technique might be a way to attach dalle de verre pieces together....🤔 I'm chasing a lost art form and running out of options.😖 Youll see a small bit of it on my channel. subbed. 😉

    • @MadiLush
      @MadiLush  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jagboy69 Yeah, I do solder e-formed pieces together. I actually use soft solder or the kind you'd use for stained glass. I sometimes e-form over it again to cover the silver color. I have copper colored solder, but it is hard type, and I just can't get it to melt. Your channel looks cool I''ll have to watch some of your videos. Cause I had to look up what "dalle de verre" was. So, you might be right about it being a lost art form. lol...

    Why add the annoying music that doesn’t fit a hobby. It sounds like you’re fighting a demon.

      @MadiLush  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      lol... I didn't know there was specific music that fit electroforming. What it is, smooth jazz? Golden Oldies? Mute it if you don't like it.

      I actually loved this video and preferred how the descriptions were written instead of a voiceover. This is the most helpful video I’ve seen in a while. I haven’t electroformed in years and had forgotten how to make the solution. Thank you!

    Gosh! All you people telling you use 'battery acid' - what the heck do you mean?! Concentrated sulfuric acid or battery electrolyte (around 30%)???
    You give no clue! Your recipes are higly confusing!

      Bro, If you can't handle a little staining you shouldn't get into electroforming. Or really any art. The solution, paint, and polish can stain your fingers for a day or so. Just part of making art. But, I wouldn't want you to have to suffer looking at yourself more than you already do. Maybe try making friendship bracelets.
