    Benzidine and Sulfuric acid are listed as active ingredients in Midas Brightener. Benzidine simply stops oxidation from occurring on the metal surface which adds an extra shine to the metal but must be acidified in solution with Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate in order to work. Benzidine is nasty stuff - Highly toxic and carcinogenic. I find using glacial Acetic acid (photography supply house) rather than Sulfuric acid yields better and brighter results on my electroplating. Just substitute glacial Acetic acid for Sulfuric acid and see if you get good results. I also filter my Copper Sulphate solution and you'd be surprised at some of the impurities I've found in that Zepp root kill! Sulfuric acid is an oxidizing acid and when it is excess in solution it can have a negative effect on the lustre of the copper crystals that form during electroplating.

    I see there are several inconsistencies in your recipe quantities. Can you just put a formula at the top and make it sticky. It seems sometimes you give quy for 1 gal and sometimes for 2 qt.

    Jason, do you know anything about adding benzidine compound and sodium potasium tartrate into the bath instead of using Midas Brightener? I have been trying to figure out recipe for brightener and these ingredients are listed on Midas Bright Copper Plating Solution MSDS. Just thought maybe you might have tried this or know why it is included in the Midas Solution. Thanks! Jamie

    For brightener, study United States Patent 2391289 by John F Beaver. Unless you're going to plate a LOT of material, it wont be wise to try making your own brightener unless you can order tiny quantities of those chemicals somehow.

    Hey Jason how's it going been watching your vids lately and I wanted to say what a great job you do thx a lot they've helped out a lot. Anywho I just made my first bath a couple days ago I made it with every you have in this vid 2 quart amount my question is I made my brightener with the miralax I found at home it's a year expired but I did some research I think it's ok to use for a purpose of this type not to take orally so question is how do I still use 30mls for 100lm of distilled water? And is that amount enough for a 2 quart bath? It's not in this vid but another one of yours when you show us another way to make brightener besides using midas. Anyways any help would be great thx again

    Nice vids on your electro forming experiments. The new brighteners are usually proprietary exotic chemicals. No idea what's in it. But if you look a bit back in time people used simpler stuff that also worked. I found reported use of saccharine(artificial sweetener, use 0.1-0.5g/l)as brightener, triethanolamine works as a leveler, reducing dendritic growth(3-10g/l). more modern formulas use (polyethylenglycol, molecular weight 1000-3000) and a bit of "Janus green" which is a special dye used in microscopy. No measure g/l given. In literature. If you feel like experimenting you can try small batches. Just do a bit research yourself using the above mentioned chemicals in conjunction with copper plating as search terms. For real thick electro forming the oldsters used periodic current reversal with the reverse always shorter than the forward. E.g. 8sec forward(that's what you do now) followed by 4sec reverse, where the ring becomes the anode and material is actually removed. Can be done easily with a timer and a few relays. Reason behind it is that during the de-plating phase mainly the high spots on your object are eroded so overall you end up with a more level surface. This technique is still used today, they just call it pulse/pulse reverse method and use fancy electronic to periodically swap +/- connection. Good luck + have fun!

    Hi Jason! Thank you for this tutorial and for the one on electroforming jewelry complete breakdown, they are both very useful and well explained for beginners like me. First question is - will the electroforming solution work without the Midas brightener? I live in Europe and they don't ship hazardous items internationally. If I don't use the bightener does this mean I should have to prepare new solution after a number of uses? My second question is: the bath quantity you prepared in this video is enough for several small pieces/rings (say around 7 to 10) electroformed simultaneously? Or should I prepare more solution for multiple pieces? Thank you!

    • @JasonWelsh

      The bath container I use actually holds 1 gallon, (2 batches of formula that i showed in this video) I can fit 15 rings at a time in the container. The "brightener" has been looked at by many people but the formula is still lost to me. i have tried about 12 different combos of chemicals but still can formulate it. Do you need it? No but all your pieces will need to be buffed. So buy a good buffer!.... You will need one anyway!

      That's because the solubility of the copper sulfate decreases as the temperature drops so you got crystals forming. Keep the solution warmer or add water. That should most likely solve your issue.

    Hi! I'm having some questions: sulfuric acid is quite toxic and dangerous, so how do I treat the piece after the bath? is it enough to rinse it with something to get rid of the residual acid? What exactly is the acid used for? Is it possible to use something different? I was wondering how that works, after all especially if you are creating jewllery, the skin would be in contact with the piece for quite a time while you wear it, so you have to take special caution. Love your videos, by the way! Thank you!

    ZEP is $13.98 per 16 oz. at Walmart. You can get pure copper sulfate on Amazon $19.95 per 5 pounds.
    Are you sure what you measured out is 16 ml? It looked like more. But, on the plus side, I'm sure glad you measured out the acid off-camera. I would hate getting that shit in my eyes.
    *A quick search revealed*: a brightening additive to electroforming electrolytes is...
    Ethylene glycol (anti-freeze). Serves as a surface active agent (surfactant). It lowers the surface tension at the metal interface, and allows the metal ions to migrate closer at surface.
    One more source of EG is...MIRALAX, which contains as its chief ingredient -EG.
    Another additive for brightening, performing the same function of allowing the metals to form a tighter plating, thus brightening, was...drumroll..Blackstrap Molassis. No, I'm not kidding.
    You're welcome.

    • @neutronpcxt372
      @neutronpcxt372 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Polyethylene glycol in the form of laxative is much more concentrated. You only need about 1g/L, or even. 2g/L at maximum. Too much surfactant can result in a finish that doesn't stick well, and prevents efficient transfer of ions, resulting in a lower bath efficiency, and a lower plating efficiency.
      What you need as a brightener is something like saccharin.

    • @kreynolds1123
      @kreynolds1123 ปีที่แล้ว

      It probably won't make a difference in 99.5% of applications but if you must have extra extra purity, you can recrystalize the copper sulfate, once or twice. Recrystalizing tends to keep impurities out of the new crystals, and concentrats the impurities in the remaining solution.
      Again, probably not needed.

      The video description is the recipe for one gallon of Copper Sulfate Solution, while in the video he only produced 2 Quarts of the solution. It was confusing as hell for me as well lol

    People on other channels just use powdered laxative as brightener 😃

    you say that you are putting in 16 ml of acid, but looking at the cup at 1.47 and looking at how full the cup is at 6.04 then id say you are putting closer to 60 ml in the mix.

      Did you ever get a reply on this? I am thinking he must mean 60ml but don't want to screw up my batch by using too much

    • @cagnucr
      @cagnucr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe the acid is low conc. and to get 16ml of acid he puts more diluted acid.

      @@SashaCrow he's definitely saying 60ml

    Jason, I'm just getting into electroplating my 3D prints (the materials are on the way from Amazon) but I do have a concern. What is the correct way of disposing of this? Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated!

      That's what I've been doing! I've been plating without the sulfuric acid (it's slower, but works), and the copper sulfate itself is root killer for septic systems, so just flush it. I don't have the brightener either, as in another video, he points out that MiraLax laxative will work. So that's two things designed to be flushed down the toilet, lol.
      If you do use sulfuric acid, baking soda should neutralize it enough to be plumbing safe. Of course, most pipe decloggers use sulfuric acid, so you can flush that as well. Really, unless you're dealing with nickel plating, these things aren't terribly toxic. Heavier metals like nickel can lead to long term heavy metal poisoning. Copper can give you headaches and cramps. Copper plating is alot safer then one would normally assume. Kids do it in high school. Unless you're dumping more then 1 gallon a month, don't worry about it. More toxic stuff comes out of your body every day.

    Can I make the mix with 50% sulfuric acid instead of 35% battery acid? And if so how would this affect the dilution? Like if 35% is used for your rate
    32oz. Copper Sulfate
    32 ml. Sulfuric Acid
    10 ml. Brightener
    Then would I just use less then the 32ml. And if so do you know how much?
    Any help is much appreciated. Also, thank you for making these videos. Making my own conductive paint has been the best, now onto the next step.

    You don't need acid

      Everyone needs acid. Mmmmmm acid. yummy. All the pros use acid. What is your revolutionary theory here? I got the impression that no acid makes for massive inconsistency.

      You kinda do need the acid. It adds another strong electrolyte into the solution, makes the solution acidic which has been tested to produce better results, and it stops the hydrolysis of the copper sulfate.

    The formula is:
    42% sulphuric acid
    26% Nitric acid
    Water

    • @-a13x-75
      @-a13x-75 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How will that work. Could you explain? Nitric acid vigorously dissolves copper and produces horrible nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide fumes.
