This is my fave performance of KZ from all her repertoire. It gets to me everytime I watch this performance. Just to give you a background why there was a song change... filming for episode 6 & 7 coincided with the Chinese Lunar New Year, and because its a week long holiday they had to film the 2 episodes back to back (2 consecutive days) ahead of the expected holiday. You can just imagine the logistical nightmare for the producers and the orchestra, how can they practice with all the artists for 2 episodes with limited time? So the producers had to ask the artists to perform without orchestra. In the case of KZ she asked her Filipino guitarist Makoy Portado to fly in to China to perform with her. Filming for episode 6 ended around midnight and KZ immediately practiced with Makoy, the clock showed they ended at 2:40am. Although the song change was jarring and nerve wracking, KZ need not have to worry because she's already familiar with the song, in fact she's covered the song probably a few times in previous years. She and Makoy however tweaked the performance to have better impact on the audience. BTW, A Great Big World, the original songwriters and performers where impressed with her cover and they tweeted "WOW, KZ. wow." a couple of days after this episode aired. Hua Chenyu the Chinese superstar sitting beside Jessie J backstage commented on camera that it was the best performance he has seen from any of the artists competing on the show as of that date. That was a lot coming from Hua Hua, he has his own cover of that song and he accompanied himself on the piano. On another note, who is your chinese friend? He looks so much like my 14 y.o. nephew. They could be dopplegangers a few years from now :-)

To put words of one of them she gave the song that desperate feelings that seems to lack in the original and putting her own twist on it. Her title Soul Supreme fits her very well in this song, as she conveys much of her soul in this.
