Learn Cantonese - Hiking in Hong Kong - Wait for me!

In this video, I teach you a few Cantonese phrases that are somewhat related to hiking in Hong Kong (at least hiking that I would do!) and also show you some beautiful views taken from Hong Kong's different hiking trails by friends of mine who have been doing a lot of hiking these past few years as COVID drags on.
I decided to do this because Hong Kong has closed its public beaches in response to the Omicron wave, and with temperatures dropping slightly, hikers in HK may have another chance to get out and hike before temperatures really start to climb and remain high. That is if the rain stops!!
I'm posting this rather later than I wanted .... you'll see the day I recorded it was Saturday, but I got busy making lots of comfort food (i.e. chicken congee) for my daughter who was rear-ended on Saturday and feeling poorly, so video editing and posting got pushed back a bit!
BUT it meant I discovered @MadeWithLau and OMG I am so happy! Daddy Lau's chicken congee was easy and different than what I usually would do (never would have thought to add oyster sauce!), and it was so tasty! Scored big points with the kids with this one, and can't wait to try more of Daddy Lau's recipes.

Your knowledge of Cantonese is excellent! I think you're doing better than A LOT of native Cantonese speakers. I can assure you that the majority of Cantonese speakers in Canton Province speak the language with some of their local accent. But in your case, I don't hear any foreign accent at all. Thank you for your efforts in promoting the language (not dialect)!

Thanks for the weird algorithm to bring me here. I get obsessed with watching this channel though I grow up in Hong Kong and Cantonese is my mother language (hahaha). The teacher's accent is perfect (even better than many of the local speakers...) and the expressions are exactly what we are using every day. :) Thank you for promoting and making Cantonese survive.
I suggest 「我對腳」. It is simpler than 「我兩隻腳」; similarly, 我兩隻眼 -->我對/雙眼
That's interesting! I've definitely heard and used 我對眼 (ngóh deui ngáahn) literally: my "pair" of eyes) but don't think I've heard 我對腳 (ngóh deui geuk) before .... but there are A LOT of words/phrases that I haven't heard before or else just never took real notice of. 😅 Thanks for adding to the conversation and teaching me/all of us something new! 🙌🏻
@@CantoneseCorner 對 is a common classifier for "a pair of" If something usually come in a pair, saying 兩隻 is not prefered. e.g. 一對襪 = a pair of socks; 兩隻襪 = two socks (It can be two different sock from different pair )
@@CantoneseCorner We would probably say "my (both) eyes" instead of "my pair of eyes" in English when it comes to body parts. How fun it actually is for how we describe things so differently in another language. We can even say 我對膝頭哥好痛，我咬崩左對門牙
@@CantoneseCorner anything that can come in pairs can be referred to 一對or 一雙，that’s why couples are referred to as 一雙一對。
“我對腳好痛” sounds a bit more natural to me but I definitely would say "我兩隻腳” sometimes.

I just stumbled into one of your videos this week, super impressed with your pronunciation and fluency in Cantonese. A lot of my Chinese/HK friends moved overseas when they were very young and a lot of them have struggled (or have no interest) to learn Cantonese.
I'm sure others have commented on how there's much less interest in Cantonese due to the more practical nature of Mandarin (to reach the Chinese market), but I just want to echo the sentiment that it's great to someone that's passionate about persevering and teaching the language. I just bumped into your channel the other day while I was searching travel information to explore the rural Thailand.
As I need to leave hk for a while to get some fresh air and freedom after 2 years and 3 months of covid lockdown. I am still facing a 7+7 quarantine policy by the hk authorities on return though!
You were talking about why you left Hong Kong for good after having lived here for 33 years almost. I kind of understand your reasons and at the same time identify with your feelings. Being born and bred here for most time of my life- had been educated overseas for more than 16 years- I constantly ask myself the questions of whether staying on or when is the best time of my departure for good.
Anyway I don’t want to ramble on here….but I wish you all the best in your new place for another page of your life.
By the way, “hold on” in the Cantonese you taught actually means “not yet” literally😄

When my feet hurt, I normally just say, "Ngóh duáy geuk hóu tung", i.e. my pair of feet hurt 😃

you know there is something very interesting about your bilingual skills, most often people are not truly bilingual like you do , or even if they do, they sounded and behave like a totally different person when speaking different languages.

Let me share with you some of my points below.
1. The formal way of "wait a minute" is "稍候片刻", not "後".
"候" is another word for "wait", as in the combination "等候"
2. It's okay to say "口渴" (hau hot) in Cantonese.
But actually I doubt if this is borrowed from Mandarin.
We can also say "頸渴" (geng hot) or "口乾" (hau gon).
I'm sure these two are much more Cantonese-styled.
3. As mentioned from below, we normally use "對" for "a pair".
It's better to say "我對腳" to mean "My legs" or "My feet".
It's rather weird to say "我兩隻腳好痛".
I think we only say "兩隻腳" when we want to emphasize both parts, e.g.
me: 我腳好痛 (my legs hurt)
mom: 左腳定右腳? (left leg or right leg?)
me: 我兩隻腳都好痛 (Both of my legs)
One thing more
In Cantonese, "腳" means both "leg(s)" and "foot/feet".
This is different from Mandarin, which uses "腿" for "legs".
You may also use "腿" in Cantonese, but it sounds quite formal.
We normally use "腳" to mean the lower limbs.
If we say "我對腳好痛", it can be "my legs hurt", "my feet hurt" or "my legs and feet hurt"
If you want to specify which part, you have to say the exact name of the part, e.g.
"我大髀好痛" = "My thighs hurt"
"我腳板好痛" = "The sole of my feet hurts"
"我腳踭好痛" = "My heels hurt"
Hi Sue you are truly amazing. I randomly found your TH-cam channel as I was looking for ways to teach my son to speak Cantonese. I barely can hear any foreign accent from your Cantonese and indeed your Cantonese is very local hk. The way how you structure your Cantonese learning materials is really awesome. I never thought that Cantonese can be learnt in such a very formal way as the language itself is quite informal. Thanks for your good work.
“Tired” in Cantonese is “攰”, “累” means tired too, but it pronounces as “luih”, and it’s the formal Cantonese (書面語). “累” also means that a person screwed the another person up
there's tons of channels teaching mandarin but cantonese are much less, glad to see your channel and your pronunciation is really accurate, support you!

Signs that have "稍候片刻" written on are quite often be used by shop keepers at the entrance when the shop is closed for a short period of time.
Also at some counters, e.g. banks or government offices, we can see those signs when the counters are temporarily not at service.
I got lost once while urban hiking in Hong Kong in 2003, I thought all the different districts, amazing flower area, plumbing supplies, etc. were so interesting and memorable. However, due to the language barrier I felt so hopeless as an adult getting lost in Hong Kong even with a map.

The way you pronounced ‘maih jyuh’ is good enough! Cos they are in the sound that is not in a common flat/increasing tone, but a relatively lower voice like mi-re (in music tone)
