I'm really enjoying your videos - especially these mahjong ones. I recently got invited to my neighbor's home (I live in a village near CUHK) and, while we had a fun time, I definitely need to improve to make it more exciting (and so I don't constantly lose. Haha). This also helps me improve my Cantonese - I appreciate how you balance both Cantonese and English in these videos - it makes it easier for me to familiarize myself with the new vocab and phrases.

This has been so useful for me! My dad, mum, aunties, and my husband's family have been trying to teach me mahjong for years - they've always tried to teach me via the Chicken variation, which has always left me super confused 😅

I know, right?! She's amazing ... like second nature to move her fingers in the way to get the tiles in the right direction and together, then flip them over like that. 🤩

I love the game of mahjong. The sound of shuffling or discarding the tiles, the strategy of outsmarting your opponents, and a bit of luck never hurts.
Just reminds me of my childhood days in HK where my late father literally taught his children the intrinsics of mahjong.

Can I ask where you got your mahjong set from. I love the colour and the size.
I play on playing with my brother, mother and step father tomorrow. None of them have ever even touched the original Mahjong. All they know is the "memory mahjong" that used to be installed on Windows back in the day. I will start them off by just playing without points and just getting down the 4x3 and a pair way of playing, before I will even begin to think of adding the point system and the requirements to win. I already know that when I get started on explaining those to them, they would 100% quit right then and there. In today's day and age it's really sad how little memory and energy people have to learn new things.

We like to play HongKong style Taiwan Mahjong since it is more flexible and more combinations.

Although I haven't been playing Mahjong for a very long time way before the COVID, one of my peers told me the rules have changed. Based from what I knew back then, the player discarded the cube don't pay for everybody but has to pay the full price of the points or double to the winner of the round while the other two players only pay 50% or full price each. If a player selected the cube from the stacks to win that round, then everyone has to pay the same complete price of the points earned. One player may consider for others by sacrifice to ensure the other two players don't lose too much money to the winner, but for those that were rivals and don't like each others that much would allow the winner to select the bullseye cube off the stacks just to feel a little better knowing that you don't suffer alone.
Head spinning a bit. Yet another Mah Jong variation. I never heard of taking out a suit or winds with less players. I started with a book years back. (Mah Jong Handbook). Just dug it up again the other day after many years. I played a few PC versions but mostly play Nintendo Famicom and Super Famicom versions. (They all play the Japanese Riichi variation and I have well over a dozen different ones. Some play 2 player, mostly 4 player but a couple can be set for 3 player.) So some questions on your variation... Is there any "dead wall" at the other end? (14 tiles left at the end. If nobody wins by that time the hand is a draw.) Also it looks like there is no kan or kong in your version? (Not sure of the terminology for another language but basically 4 of a kind of any tile). If a 4 of a kind is allowed do you pick a tile from the dead wall? (Opposite end). When breaking the wall with the dice on a 3 player game you are still counting 4 seat positions but if it lands on the unused seat it goes to the next one? Is there a point of discarded tiles where the hand is considered a draw? (Trying to find out more with 2 player variations. I've seen one version end after 36 discards (18 for each player). 2 other two player cartridge versions end after 40 discards. (20 per player).
I have tried American Mahjong with the Joker tiles but with the "charlston" tile swapping at the begining, possible 5 of a kinds and very picky hands i could not get into it as much.
Riichi mahjong is my favorite so far. Learning about a required "yaku" to be able to win really changes things. (Special criteria your hand needs to go out. Some possibilities... Concealed hand, all simples (2 thru 8 tiles only), a pung of dragons, a pung of a wind of the round, a pung of your own wind, 2 identical sequences, all one suit...) It goes on and on. A bit difficult to learn at first but keeps you from putting together "anything" to win. Also a dora tile revealed for extra bonus points for certain tiles in your hand.
Im waiting on a book on Riichi mahjong (mainly for the scoring as the cartridge versions figure out the points for you).
Same for watching your videos. Yet another variation to learn. So many out there. Thanks for showing yet another way to play.

I miss her, and editing this video was kinda hard since I didn't think I'd be leaving so soon after we recorded it, yet that's what happened. So yes, I'm back on the east coast of the USA for the time being -- trying not to worry too much.

Hi there! I’m so sorry but this set I got from my mother-in-law many years ago and my most recent set I got from the mahjong shop in Hung Hom. I’m really not sure where to get one elsewhere …. I wish I had a better recommendation but short of the mom and pop shops in HK I don’t know where to go.
I would recommend when buying though that you make sure the tiles are HK standard size - it is my understanding that tiles from Taiwan can be smaller (my NY Yankees set is and that was bought in Taiwan) and I also have a slightly larger set than HK standard size. Also make sure you get the set you want in terms of English notation on the winds and specials or not. I teach people to play by putting different colored circle stickers on to differentiate if they don’t know the Chinese characters- same for the character suit. So that way I don’t need to get a set with English letters and numbers on them. I wish you luck and happy playing! 🀄️
@@CantoneseCorner My mother lives in Hung Hom. I also bought my set of tiles from Hung Hom, also green in colour, in mid 80s, early 90s. If you are outside HK, try chinese stores.
I just want to add a chicken hand is without your seated flower and if you dont self pick your winning card
you are so smart being a westerner you know the trick of this game. Seniors like to play this game to kill time also to train their mind of logic while some are so addicted who want to make money from gambling. I personally enjoy the western way of lifestyle, quiet and relax, not this type of activity especially at home.

Yes, it does :) I just call them "special" although yes in English they're properly referred to as the winds and dragons. I'll try and remember that next time!

If I understand you correctly, perhaps the best example in cinema is the mahjong scene in Crazy Rich Asians between Rachel (not yet a daughter-in-law, but close!) and Eleanor? IMHO, that scene is sheer perfection.
