- DEFLECTION LOAD TEST ON OPEN WEB GIRDER BRIDGE
Any newly constructed railway major bridges of PSC girder / steel girder / composite girder should compulsorily required Deflection test either by static or dynamic as an assurance tests as per the Bridge rules.
1) Standard penetration test (SPT) : The standard penetration test (SPT) is a common test used to determine the geotechnical properties of soil
2) Initial vertical load test An initial vertical load test is a method for determining the bearing capacity of a pile or group of piles
3) Routine load tests "Routine load testing" refers to a standard, regularly performed test on a system
4) Dynamic load tests Dynamic load testing is a method used to assess the bearing capacity of a foundation pile by applying a rapid, impactful force (like a hammer blow) to the pile head and measuring the resulting stress waves traveling through the pile
5) Pile Lateral load test The initial lateral load test for piles shall be conducted after 28 days of lateral load test pile casting by obtaining a reaction from the concrete blocks or adjacent piles.
6) Pile integrity test A pile integrity test (PIT) is a non-destructive method for evaluating the condition of piles and shafts.
7) Deflection load test A deflection load test measures the deflection of a structural member under a load, and is used to determine if the loading has caused permanent deformation. The test measures deflection during both loading and unloading
Deflection test on ROR of spans (1 of 30.5m + 2 of 45.7m) Open Web Girder Br.4 between Kondrapol-Vishnupuram stations on BN-NDKD section of Guntur Division in connection with Proposed Railway Siding taking off from Vishnupuram Railway Station for Yadadri Thermal Power Plant (5 units of 800 mw) at Veerlapalem village.
When a newly constructed bridge is to be accepted for operation then a full-fledged testing of the bridge is to be carried out as an assurance test as per the Bridge rules specifying the loads for design of super-structure and sub-structure of bridges.
When testing a girder bridge, the primary type of test is a deflection load test including deflection measurements, strain gauging, and dynamic loading. Which can be further categorized static, dynamic and dynamic impact based tests on the specific aspects being evaluated.
METHODOLOGY OF DEFLECTION LOAD TEST
Placing LVDT with Data Logger below girders by means of magnetic stand over rigid steel structure free from disturbance resting over existing ground level.
Recording of deflection of Girder at the mid-span of the bridge by placing the loco and Wagons for the Static test / Dynamic test.
Recording of the data at different stages: -
1) After placing of load on the span
2) After Final Removal of Load from the span

Reaction at the support
Max Bending Moment at Centre
Equivalent uniformly distributed load for Live Load, Bending Moment.
Findout deflection at various stages (i.e. initial, at test load, and after removal of load)
Findout the percentage Recovery
Calculation of Total Deflection, Deflection due to Dead load, superimposed dead load, Live load.
