Warframe - Zephyr Crit Inherit and Crit Recursion Explained

- I've been seeing a lot of questions about how zephyr's tornado works, especially about some of the weirder bugs & mechanics like crit inherit, so thought i'd make a guide explaining what I understand about them to the best of my ability.
This video covers why Nataruk and Incarnon Weapons behave weirdly when shot into Tornadoes, why Trumna can sometimes refill its alt fire but not always, and why Electric and Gas damage deals such absurd damage on zephyr when playing solo.
To clarify, I was aware of all of these mechanics before @Doth_ 's video was released, but it's a pretty good vid too (If you aren't aware of the vid, check it out here • Warframe 2023 | Zephyr... ), it covers the topic as well.

Ive noticed you guys that play zephyr really go in depth and are the most informative on the frame and her abilities.appreciate all the content
Perhaps playing zephyr is a symptom of some over explanatory disease
Zephyr always reminds me of Mag, love frames with such particular interactions in general, but they're also really cool for getting more out of certain weapon properties, increasing the dps and/or kps of certain weapons when used as a tool in the setup, sometimes by a TON. Some of it's very intuitive, like shooting a big plasmor shot through all of the tornadoes AND enemies or having a punchthrough projectile hit many times in Magnetize, but then there's that nitty gritty layer that let's you really do some crazy stuff, mainly regarding how the abilities effectively absorb and deal your dmg again. There's ones like Banshee, another favorite, but Mag and Zephyr's twists on the weapon sandbox are my favorite.

Your information delivery and video structure are spot on, and I would be more than happy to share my Captura tips or offer anything else that would be helpful. I wish I was able to observe and explain these details as well as you have.
Also dude I need you to help me with my orbiter fashion cause damn what a set you’ve got.
The Zariman and Duviri did wonders for orbiter fashion, walls and planters go wild for the shapes and contours.

Thank you so much! I really appreciated your guide, it inspired a lot about the vibe of my video (unfortunately I am very impatient and can't work captura to save my life so I wasn't able to recreate your cool intros and scenes).
If and when I make more warframe videos I'll try and look into your captura scenes to study them, seems like a good tip to improve video quality by a lot.
As for orbiter decoration, Acrithis really is the savior of all orbiters, her decorations are so cheap and can be spammed everywhere so making a cohesive theme is incredibly easy, highly recommend.

This is the technical in depth info I need after learning darn near everything about this game, and yet I'm still learning. We've got a lot of great creators in WF dont get me wrong but your content is refreshing in it's capacity to go into greater detail. You earned a sub from me.
Thank you! Unfortunately i'm afraid I won't be able to go into much detail about other frames, I'm very much a zephyr onetrick (I think i've got like 45% of my playtime on her). But hey, zephyr always has more weird stuff to talk about.

As of todays hotfix the eletric procs chaining between tornadoes was patched, however they fixed the 500k damage cap
Was about to comment that here. Its a shame elec got shafted but now we have melee influence and the tornadoes won't die after one influence zap

ngl, hearing you talk about zeph and how you user her and her kit, reminds me of WAY back when limbo really did get a lot of pub hate, I, a limbo main, would start missions with "are you all ok if I stop time in my bubble?" and would explain how limbo works, the backflip bit, especially if I saw any other person leveling limbo to try and let limbo exist
I guess his changes make this matter much less, I dont do it anymore, especially since scarlet spear was our moment to shine, fkn loved speedruning that mission as limbo, actually being wanted...
anyways that was a tangent, but its interesting to see more zeph content showing me how to utilize her better because my main reason for picking frames when I first started on console was "they look cool" or "did a cool move" so it was frost for his 2, zeph for flying, and limbo for everything (including timestop, altho at the time I had not seen jojo so I wasnt shouting "the world" or anything then)

I really need to pick up Helstrum. That wyrm set up is so nice. Recently got back into warframe and I have fallen in love with zephyr. Her and Baruuk are my mains now. Wild to me that people don’t play her more
instead of running silence you can also use titanias subsume, spellbind. If you use power efficiency you can use the augment for energy. And lastly, you can 100% hunt eidolons with jetstream augment and a kuva hek.

Also it’s neat you have your configs named after birds, my main beat endgame build is AC-130 and not like a joke that’s the gameplay, you’re a hard af to kill flying aircraft that rains hell down with seemingly endless explosive ammunition, except i don’t have to land to replenish because warframe, and recently i picked up a helstrum to pair with dethcube after i discovered fortuna had these things then had a video pop up like those telepathic ads we seem to get and it’s just beautiful
(dispensary is what i use and i used jet stream over repair dispensary for when I’m not using a sentinel due to jet stream making hover mode faster in air mobility)

I discovered the electric damage and vulnerability of tornados simultaneously with sobek after i had one of *those* simulacrum sessions trying saryn and sobek and crashing my game a bunch and I legitimately thought it was a bug until i did it last week with something that wasn’t using electricity but i don’t think i was using gas either i might be wrong tho
welp time to update, electric and gas interaction is gone (but tornadoes still have 500k health as of 2/23) thanks DE
They don't have the HP anymore, they actually became invulnerable with the same patch.

Honestly the skills absolutely transfer, I'm a huge builder in minecraft, having worked for a couple minecraft servers (might make a video on orbiter decorating and/or minecraft building sometime soon
Hey as someone who's getting into zephyr heavily i really enjoyed your content, they way you explained everything really helped me understand why i was doing good damage in solo lobbies but when i went public or was in a friends game i was hitting like a wet noodle. I just had two questions though, #1 i don't have max rank with fortuna so i can buy the helmstrum for my sentinel, i have artax, burst laser prime and laser rifle prime. what would you recommend? #2 i was wondering if you think rubico prime is a good choice as a weapon to combo with tornado's?
Thanks! I haven't really tested other sentinel weapons besides helstrum, but i'd imagine Artax is the best choice since as a beam it applies status relatively consistently? It probably won't perform anywhere near the strength of Helstrum though. As for Rubico prime, yeah, I think that's a great weapon - not necessarily for crit recursion since its fire rate and status chance are too low to consistently guarantee it working, but taking a sniper's Single-Target damage and applying it to a group will always be great. Do keep in mind that you won't get headshot multipliers with tornadoes though, so it'll still be a bit worse than Single-Target DPS.
cool ill try out the artax and see how it is. but are you sure that headshot multiplier doesn't apply? because i remember primary deadhead getting procs off of just tornado's. but that could just be the precision kill and not the multiplier lol

Interesting, I may need to experiment more with it - as far as i'm aware, tornadoes should never headshot (they don't apply most other external damage bonuses either (like GunCO and similar stuff), and it wouldn't really make sense for them to), but I do know there's some jank interactions with electricity and gas being able to headshot as status effects, so there may be some interactions going on there?
Probably? at the time when i noticed it i was testing with my phantasma and that had 100% status with pure electric. i just assumed it was some weird interaction with the shock tendrils maybe getting the final hit on the head therefor proc'ing it. but i could be wrong lol@@Kiocifer
Sorry to bother again but i did some testing and can confirm that i was crazy and you were correct lol. primary deadhead does not proc with tornado's and i must've been missing some shots unintentionally causing it to proc originally lol@@Kiocifer

Hey so I watched your video, and I don't have any of the guns you covered. I was checking out fulmin. Cause of its high crit and intrinsic electric, and I just happened to have a crit chance riven. But based on your expirements do you have any other good weapons?
Generally any weapon that can reach 100% crit chance or above when accounting for Zephyr's float passive and can equip hunter minions and has a non-zero status chance will work (Although preferably something that isn't innate heat/cold/toxin since those don't allow you to equip electric mods. If it's heat/toxin you can make gas on the weapon which does work as well, although it's very prone to prematurely breaking the tornadoes since the gas clouds will linger and deal millions of damage per tick to the tornadoes so you'll need to recast often.)
Held beams are generally imo the best option, I personally believe the Quanta Vandal is the best because it has innate multishot, insanely long range, innate electric, and solid base crit and status chance, but Synapse is incredible, Convectrix works but it's a better standalone weapon anyways due to insane slash proccing, Phage is great, and basically all the beams are.
That being said, I've seen it work with literally a Mk1 Braton, I've found a lot of success with the Gotva Prime, if you have that from Tennocon. I've made it work with the Nagantaka, I've made it work really well with the Latron prime, and Primary Gaze/Rattleguts kitgun works quite well too.
Honestly this comment has inspired me to make a video on weapons that are good with zephyr, since there's a lot of janky interactions that either severely harm or greatly an enhance a weapon when used by her!
I've seen a lot of people recommend Fulmin & Tenet Arca Plasmor and while I understand the reason in an abstract sense (they do hit multiple times in tornadoes), there's so many other weapons that are even stronger due to having the stat budget to be a stronger single-target gun like a Sniper Rifle or Shotgun (Taking a Rubico Prime or Tigris Prime to a tornado does some real messed up stuff to those inside), or due to interesting mechanics like crit inherit/recursion (Like Quanta Vandal, other beam weapons, or something with a strong but low crit-chance alt fire like Cedo)

for her tornado health/ damage cap, is it affected with ability strength?
No, I believe it's an unintended byproduct of how the tornadoes are coded - realistically, reaching the damage values needed to break tornadoes is really quite difficult, and would've been almost impossible back before Warframe got power-crept, but now that we all can deal millions of damage at once pre-crit, it's something we need to look out for
zephyr is my farm carry, nezha is my sp bullshit tank n spank. those are my two biggest to go frames

Tornado can absorb elemental damage, so shooting tornado with electric will proc archon stretch

Yeah, since I always run at least one electric weapon in my load outs, Archon stretch is just free energy. It's super duper overkill with my helstrum sentinel giving me infinite energy though.

The Quanta is IMO the best weapon for crit recursion, but any weapon that can reach 100% crit chance and can have electric modded onto it and can deal some status procs somewhat well can work.
Maybe try the Gotva Prime if you have it, or any other fast firing high crit primary (fulmin works but it's not incredible)
