That's a bit odd, they must be getting desperate for subscriptions.

So me shipping Cube x Gwen when I was 14 wasn't deranged, and was actually a really sensible choice? Feels good to be vindicated over a decade later.

It's cute what they managed to do despite the GBA's limits. I really wish they'd carried the expanded personality types from that matchmaking minigame forward.
It’s not even just the GBA’s limits, it’s the E-reader’s limits, much smaller than the GBA. An e-reader card could barely hold a couple Super Mario Bros 3 levels, so it had to be extremely bare bones if they wanted to do anything animal crossing. Makes it even cooler IMO!
cute? it's damn impressive too!!
@@daveslamjam Yes! VERY damn impressive!
I didn't know those e-Reader minigames were even a thing! They apparently weren't even mentioned on Nookipedia until January of this year. As the entire minigames are stored on the cards themselves as dot codes, there isn't even a trace of them in the main game code, which made them a bit tricky to re-discover. And of course, they never made it to Europe for obvious reasons.
And the codes were excruciating to scan. You had to get it just right. I still have a few hanging about somewhere.
Theoretically that means you could make your own e-reader mini games, albeit only if you have intricate coding knowledge
@@mruglehface Exactly! In fact, Tech Tangents has been experimenting on that for months.
@@dyter424 Really?
Seeing all the work that they put into the sprites makes me wish they made a full on Animal Crossing GBA game. That style is quite charming.
Dude, yeah, a 2D Animal Crossing seems like it'd be so fun. I never thought about the fact that every AC game has been 3D. Modern Nintendo would never make a 2D AC, but it would be a really cool, new way to experience the series!
I feel like Wild World should’ve been in 2D
@@plhector But that would've been weird, as Animal Forest, Forest+, Population Growing, and Forest e+ were 3D.
@@Most-sane-deltarune-fan Mario Kart was 2D, then went 3D, then went 2D again for GBA. I think they could’ve made it work for animal crossing. WW was already limited on the DS with no holidays and a very small town with now elevation.
@@plhector Weren't there cliffs or something in Wild World? Walls? A really tall town gate?
Underrated part of this video is at the very end where you are thanking your channel members. I love when you gave the acknowledgement they deserve for supporting you.
I find myself pausing during the read-out like that every time. The member in question is simply a blank profile with no name, and they’ve never reached out to put a name in here… so I may be stuck with the verbal pause recognition. 😭
You could say “no profile name” or “blank profile name” so that it doesn’t sound like you forgot what you were about to say.
@@fuseegelee Maybe, but at this point I think the little verbal pause has its own charm since they quite literally have nothing written there for me to read. I really don’t mind, it’s just a funny little quirk that’s been a part of the member read-outs for a while now.
If multiple people start to pledge anonymously like this to where I have multiple no names, then I’ll just move them all to the end of the list so I wouldn’t have to pause every time. 😆

Something I just thought about, I'm surprised no one has made a "Super Tortimer" SMB romhack, even if it is just different sprites. The cherry on top would it being playable in AC GCN.
It is playable in the GameCube version of Animal Crossing. If you talk to Tortimer on April 1st, he gives it to you as a furniture item and you can put it in your home and play it that way like any of the NES titles
Super Tortimer is not an actual game you can play though, since interacting with it just brings up April Fools dialogue… unless you’re pranking us by trying to say you can play it! 😮
@@Hunter-R. I thought I remembered playing it back in middle school, but I guess I was mistaken. Sorry for spreading misinformation. Great video as always!
I wish they did something a little like these with nook link. Just add in some on-the-go minigames to give little rewards.
Absolutely floored by the amount of STUFF in the first gen of AC games. How am I still learning of new things even to this day?

"Faith the koala, for example, only came back as a villager very recently! She's an uchi and she lives on my New Horizons island. :)" Do you really consider the 5th of November, 2021 to be "recently"? Also, what Faith is, is called "sisterly".

e-Reader content is such a Pandora Box, where you never know what’s going to be hidden behind their low weight.
Ive been a diehard ACGC fan for literally decades and I never knew e-reader games existed beyond the NES ones and Animal Island. Crazy
It makes me wish they had made a GBA Animal Crossing. They totally could have stuck a battery and real-time clock in a cartridge and figured something out.
That's what happened with the Pokémon games from Gen 2 onwards, so I don't see why they couldn't have done it with Animal Crossing.
I always wondered those others GBA mini-games since I didn't have the e-Reader cards (except the one that came with the e-Reader) or played the e+ Plus version, finally it was nice to know the answer, so thanks!.
Oh and just in case, despite that you need a GBA to play the mini-games, there is actually another way to play it and also helpful for make captures kind easily and is by the Game Boy Player (I played Animal Island in that way 😂).
Only downside is that you need a second GameCube or a Wii with backwards compatibility and a TV with 2 video outputs (or an adapter).
Also just in case, you forgot the other use of the GBA that is download the design's pattern mini-game at Able Sister which is just... play the mini-game portable and then transfer the design to the game (not quite a big deal but probably was a neat way back then to let anyone to design something on the GBA and let the other player to continue in play the game).

It's crazy how many little things some of these older games were packed with, without needing to update them a single time. There were bugs ofc but generally they just worked.

Tysm for making a video about this i was never able to find any footage of the E-reader minigames
You got sponsored! Lets freaking go
that Whodunnit one is pretty rough with needing every one of the cards so as to be able to give any answer.
I'm kinda shocked I've never heard about these at all, I've been following online discussion for this game for as long as I can remember but this is genuinely the first time I've heard anything about these.
Nintendo put so much effort into this, but the eReader sorta failed. Whereas with the success of amiibo, they didn’t utilize them enough! Man, I would love to play this and the Pikmin 2 eReader games even if they are just shallow distractions.
excuse me, the pikmin WHAT??
Yeah, the Japanese version of Pikmin 2 has a whole line of cards and fairly decent puzzle mini games. Fun fact: because of the eReader cards people know the name of the obscure “Ujadani” creature.
Animal Crossing Gamecube is tied for my favorite game of all time. I thought I knew almost everything about the game, but I had no idea about any of these mini games! I really appreciate learning so much about this game I love from your videos, keep up the great content man!
The mechanics of the Animal Island game are also oddly complex for how simple it seems, I think more so than any of the other minigames mentioned. You have to manage your islander's mood depending on what happens to them, and you can give them food but each islander has different preferences. What items you can get (some of which are exclusive to this game) depend on their happiness, personality, and if they have a golden tool. All the sprites for everything are really cute. Also, I like the music and the fact that it changes tempo or into swing depending on the mood.
Kinda wish the last 3 games just made it into the full games. Itd be fun to join in on villagers playing games.
I remember seeing my brother play his gba and I would always beg to use it to connect it to my sisters GameCube since I had heard you could through a school rumor of sorts so it's fun seeing what I missed out on Great video!
They may not have manually made unique fireworks for every character card - if i were programming that I'd make it automatically generate variations depending on the card

the e-reader minigames remind me of present day animal crossing minigames tbh, like desert island escape. you have to scan in 3 amiibo cards (or use play coins) to build a team. I wonder if that's a coincidence, or if that was an intentional hidden easter egg
honestly you brought it up mostly as a joke, but i have always been morbidly curious just what all HAPPENS in amiibo Festival under the hood. i played that game when it was new (tl;dr of my thoughts: it's not at all good on an objective level, but honestly? it's still a LITTLE fun with friends and family to tough out a "Bad" party game together... especially when it somehow becomes a very absurd competition anyways. though also, i have always been a fan of games that are so bad, that a weird unintended form of fun seeps in when you try to play them.) and with what i did play, i could NEVER get a proper read on just what all was going on under the hood. that game is basically if a so-bad-its-good jackbox party pack was programmed into a black box.
...also, at least it gave us desert island escape, and i think even Nintendo realized they made something TOO GOOD to consign it to there given it's literally just in welcome amiibo. ;P
I wonder how much stuff like this is in the rest of the series.
Only thing that comes to mind right now is Desert Island Escape in the New Leaf update (and in that other title that shall not be named...)
interesting, I've never seen a sponsorship for to TH-cam premium before. (also I love your channel!!!)

This is so cool! Maybe cover the Amiibo Card games included in... *the board game*... next? :)
i'm in NEED of more videos from you, please keep posting!
I guess I'll be the only amiibo Festival defender.
I’ve learned there are quite a lot of amiibo Festival fans… I definitely don’t think it’s a bad game, it was just disappointing to me as a Wii U owner looking forward to a mainline Animal Crossing on the console. In terms of gameplay… it’s serviceable, but at the same time if I want to play a party board game, I think I’d just play Mario Party. 🤔
@@Hunter-R. Real talk, I'm about to dribble out an essay.
And that's really the only reason it failed: people wanted a mainline Animal Crossing and the idea that Mario Party is the only good party board game. (There's also the fact that people didn't want to open their amiibo to use them in 2015, but that's another story)
The fact of the matter is, they really couldn't make a mainline Animal Crossing for the Wii U at that point, New Leaf was barely two years old (in the West) and the team was split doing Splatoon as they share the team, which is why Animal Crossing got 'small projects' with amiibo Festival, Happy Home Designer, the Welcome amiibo update for New Leaf, and later on Pocket Camp.
It's why I groaned when Splatoon 3 was announced, because it meant New Horizons was going to end, since we really only got New Horizons once Splatoon 2 slowed down.
But also on that end, Monopoly isn't the only board game out there, so why should every virtual board game be like Mario Party? I hear people all the time ask why there's so many platformers from Nintendo when Mario is the main one, but the thing is everything in a genre brings something different to the table.
I found amiibo Festival better than Mario Party 10 simply because all I need is four amiibo and the gamepad to play, and the game came with two amiibo.
Mario Party 10 had the gamepad, but each player needed Wii remotes for the mini-games, and if you wanted to play amiibo party in MP10, you needed amiibo as well. To which if someone had a Bowser amiibo every mini-game would be a Bowser mini-game and it would be entirely lop-sided favoring the Bowser player.
I just think the hate for amiibo Festival was misplaced, or rather, it was hated due to hasty feelings from an impatient fanbase, ironic for a series that focuses on a slow relaxing pace to its gameplay.
@@Aerafuzquick correction! the Splatoon and Animal Crossing teams have separated! the reason there's no ACNH updates is unrelated to Splatoon 3

this solved a 20+ year mystery for me, i never had the e-reader but always imagined what the mini games would be like, i'm glad to see they're... not as exciting as my childhood imagination made them. as a kid i imagined graphics akin to the japanese exclusive minigames. i would have been sooooo disappointed by the e-reader games because the sports fair days were my favourite holidays and i just made believe my player character participated in them anyway 😂

The way the GameCube and GBA worked with each other in so many games is cool. Wish more consoles did that more often.
Animal Crossing was originally released for the Nintendo 64. The GameCube port was the first game from the series to be released internationally.
TH-camr "im a blisy" has been doing loads of neat work in the pokemon space with the e-reader, creating custom cards/events for the gen 3 games. I wonder if something similar could be pulled off for AC?

You didn’t mention the pattern designer that you can download from the Able Sisters?
I did spend quite a bit of time playing around with the island resident on the GBA, but I'm not sure I ever knew that two of the NES games were obtainable through it. I would have lost so much time replaying Wario's Woods on the GameCube.

Question about the GBA NES games, are the games downloaded to the console the same as the later "Classic NES Series" cartridges? If not, could you look into the differences?
I believe they are the same, but they actually released in Animal Crossing first before being sold separately as GBA cartridges. I’d have to look into it further to see if the ROMs are the exact same, but I wouldn’t expect major differences.
@Hunter-R. you have to remember that mario party 10 was the only mario party on the wii u, and that one uses the cart-driving-together system that wasnt popular over the original formula. if someone wanted to play mario party somewhat like the original mario party, their only options would be virtual console or amiibo festival.
Animal Island is also the easiest way to clone items.
