Very nice setup on the mixing station. There are a couple of things I would consider. At some point you will want to get in there through the top to be able to scrub out the 210 gallon tanks. Using the filter sock is a real nice touch that I am sure will extend the length of time in between cleanings but eventually the tanks will need to be scrubbed out/ cleaned. It is not always a fun job getting up on a ladder but I would start thinking about ways to clean it safely. Love your videos! Even something as simple as this one. I can always appreciate the work behind operating a large gallery of fish tanks and the way you set things up to make life easier. Keep them coming Jake!
Filtering the mix with a sock is actually brilliant. Never even thought about that. However I can confirm that on occasion even the more “cleaner salt” like Red Sea and even Brightwell have occasionally left a very gritty residue that I could only describe as a rock that’s been ground to dust and of course won’t dissolve in water.
Damn bro you gave an awesome idea to filter the water before put it in the fish tank, while is mixing is a good thing to filtered at the same time. Thank you!
Nice! I only have one tank, but mixing water is the thing making me neglect maintenance. I have RO water storage, but need some mixing storage. This inspired me for a winter project for sure. Nice work!
I just wanted to say thanks for this post, I dig some digging, found these, and I'm going to add them to the next iteration of my water mixing station.
Great video-1 question though- you said you filter your salt, but where is it mixed with the RO before it’s filtered into your salt water storage tank?
Thank you for showing the final product on the water vats looks sharp. Love the stand too. What would be cool is if you did a video on how you filter the salt. That would be helpful to see for someone new to the hobby. I appreciate all your videos and input and I hope you're having a great day!
How about some coral, fish etc videos. Discussing what is going on with the fish, the hobby. What’s new. How to choose keep and raise fish and corals and anemones etc.
Rather than using the filter sock, just plumb an inline 10" filter housing before the garden hose hook up and change the 5 micron pleated filters when they get dirty. Best thing I did to my mixing station. Still have to clean the barrels once in a while but at least the precipitate doesn't end up in the display tank. Great video.
Nice setup! But I would add a support too the pipe whit the hose fitting so you don´t put too much stress on the pipes when you walking around whit the hose in the studio and filling the tanks.
One quick question as I'm using this as inspiration, Why the valve at the top (coming off pump) for the RO/Freshwater tank? I get the Valve at the top for the SW Tank but was unsure why you might need to move water? from the SW tank, over to the RO/FW tank? (THANKS!)
Hey Jake, did you look into "Gardena" Stuff?? They have really much for garden work, but im not sure if you can get them at your location or over the salty pond...much pond guys using the gardena stuff for their filters.
Hello @ReefBuilders Jake, I have a question I have purchased 2 vertical water storage tanks brand new. How would you recommend to clean them out before use??? Im afraid there is mold release agent and just dust or dirt. I heard bleach, distilled vinegar none antibacterial dish soap? Thank you so much in advance
Reef Builders have you measured it in any way? Bear brewing isn’t going to be effected by nitrates, phosphates, etc... and I’m guessing changing out that media is going to end up being more expensive than a simple ro membrane. Odd choice to spend so much on everything else and then skimp on an RO membrane. Plus accidents happen... sooner or later the city water will have a mainline break somewhere, a boil order, something and you’ll have to deal with junk in the water.
Hey Jake, I've been dealing with silicates for the last year and besides burning through Sera Marine media haven't found a solution. How is working for you and where can I source?
I want to see how you plan on getting an MP40 at the bottom of that tank, and how you plan on removing the wetside for periodic maintenance. Long line fishing? :D
Yep the filter sock for clean mixed salt water I wouldn't have thought it would be dirty. Also silly question wouldn't it maybe reduce salinty from the batch after going through the sock.?
I want to see your filter sock experiment with Fauna marin reef pro, it is supposed to be mega clean. Nice vat setup, I have a similar setup and love it.
Try on msc direct they have lots of options that might satisfy your needs. That’s where I got mine from if I can find the part number I’m updated the comment for you.
You mean I could charge money to get you guys to clean my tanks? LOL but in all seriousness, I've been ruminating on the idea of a 'ReefStock Pro' for many years ;-)
Ok that filter sock was nasty. I know you kept saying "a 1000 gallons" went through it as if that's a lot. But my return pumps easily push 1000 gallons every hour, and if my filter socks looked that color after 1 hour I would worry about the quality of my water. I like your water system with one major problem, those valves at the top, they seem to be very high up and inaccessible unless you had a ladder, or step stool. But I agree, having water ready to go is so convenient, it makes doing water changes, top offs, heck just cleaning stuff with RO/DI water (even though you don't do have that) just so much easier, and if it's easy you will tend to do it more and not slack off.
It's 1000 gallons worth of dirty minerals, not dirty organics which would be very worrying. everything is built vertically at the studio because I'm a tall dude so reaching those top valves isn't hard,
@@ReefBuildersVideo Gotcha, didn't quite get how you ran the water through there, do you simply clamp it inside your mixing vat as the Vectra is cycling water? Or is it when you put water directly in other tanks?
Bulkreefsupply has some really nice cam-level disconnects that do not reduce down like the one you are using. Not sure if they are sealing though (valved, as you say). www.bulkreefsupply.com/pumps-plumbing/plumbing/quick-connect-fittings.html
@@harkinsaquatics Those uniseals aren't permanent, I can pull the spaflex out but not planning on really EVER having to clean the vats, that's why I clean the seawater as it's being mixed. But IF that time comes, I could also easily just cut the pipe and add some as needed ;-)

It's nice to see more specific topical videos like this, it's cool to really understand the thought that goes behind each piece / decision. 👍
Quality is the attention to the fine details and you've got that covered thanks for sharing Jake
Really nice setup Jake. Clearly very well thought out. Love it, thanks so much for showing us.
Always great to see a new video. Greatest hobby keeps me busy

Good point on filtering fresh salt water definitely take that on

Cam lever couplers are the best large quick connect/disconnet fittings

How were you cycling the made salt water through the filter sock and how long after mixing it together in the tub did you start?
Where did I you get the fitting

I just run it through a filter sock, that's all, which you can see in the clips at the very end of the video
Whats the micron value of the filter sock your using? That's such a great solution !!!!

That's partially what the spaflex at the top is for, to add a little bit of wiggle room.

I just picked up a 110 gallon full drain cone tank. No freight! Planning on getting another one to redesign my mixing station.

Aren't you worried your tapwater quality might vary? My town has tapwater with TDS of 1 and I still have to use rodi or will get hair algae.
nope, Golden Colorado has legendary good clean water which is used by tons of local breweries to make beer.

I really wish I had the space to build something like that, I'm stuck with 7 gallon barrels under my stairs haha!
Solid as a rock
Use camlocks man... quick disconnects but may drip a little but big hose and faster water change!
I want to see how you plan on getting an MP40 at the bottom of that tank, and how you plan on removing the wetside for periodic maintenance. Long line fishing? :D
Really nice set up bro. Question. How do you “ filter your salt” ? Do you add it to the filter sock and run the RO through it?
I was wondering the same thing. Also, when you mix, are you using the external pump in a loop and the submersible pumps at the same time?
Hey Jane, amazing videos and the water storage great. I'm looking to buy a smaller storage for mixing.
Looks sharp man, only took a year to place and set 😆
How many gallons per hour does your tap water go through your filter
it's about 30 gallons per hour.
Which float valve did you go with?
Great content. Keep it coming!!!
Just a basic floater with 1/4" tubing insert
Nice setup. Where did you get the storage tanks from? It's hard to find them tall, skinny, with a large opening on top.
Looks like a Norwesco #47401

Hi Jack Adams. A while ago did not see you ?? 😁
Salt stacked under a possible water holding tank, think on condensing or leaking?
I've already leaked on then a few times but the bags are sealed, no worries there

Awesome tip on filtering the salt water!

Couldnt you use the the M1 for circulation?
I could if I didn't run it through a filter sock to clean the seawater. Besides I prefer to decouple the functions of various pumps
There are lots of different fittings if you google banjo fittings and valves. I use them on my mixing station
Do you mix the water first then pump it into the vat? Great video, I'm on the look out for some decent vats in the uk.
Definitely interested in a good quick connect.
Start a tank with no water changes, it's best there is 👌💪
I use the quick connect fittings sold on brs. They are the best imho.

Not enough unions....
two unions at the pump, one built in to each ball valve, not really any need for more, and unlike a tank I can drain the whole thing for maintenance.
