Legit contender for worst controls in any video game, ever.
I justified playing this game on a Macintosh SE30 with a keyboard back in the 80s by convincing myself that the graphics were really cool 😂

Mike has the best rage moments because they are genuine unlike most who are just acting it up.
It only adds to the frustration when the game goes into a kill loop where it keeps saying, "nya-nya-nya-nya-nya."

It's a bad port, not a bad game. On the Macintosh it was a killer app which sold countless old boxy Macs.

@@abesimpson5503 the mac had a lot of nice what we would call indy games now. Most DOS PCs had no soundboard, no mouse, no built in networking...I was a Macintosh gamer until 1994ish, my 1989 Mac IIci has 64mb ram, 4mb 3d video card, a Soundblaster 16, eithernet a massive 2gb hdd, modified motherboard to have status leds, upgraded cpu cache. It runs 6.x, 7.x and unix. Find me a DOS PC with better specs a common person could own.
Macintosh IIs were serious hobbiest PCs.
Added: fully LISA compatable too!
And could display "millions of colors" at very high res. But I didn't get the video card until 1992 when it was price reduced.
My DOS PC at the time was a 386 dx 25 with 2 megs of socketed dram, a vga card capable of 256 colors, adlib soundcard incapable of digital audio, 2 40meg RLL hdds. Great for spreadsheet, but light-years behind Amiga or Macintosh.
Even Atari's were better to game on than a DOS pc, I only owned 1, 16bit one, but lots, lots of fun action games.

4:55 the key is used to escape the "Trouble" path and unlock the door you came in from at the beginning, you went the wrong way immediately basically.
if you fall in the other parts it sends you down to the "Trouble" path prison and from there you have to go back to the main room with the key to unlock the door and try the other rooms again (aka reset the game unless you have items)
best room to go in first is the rightmost one, "Shield" you have to grab the shield at the end then hold it up and get it hit by lightning ofc. once you finish you get an item that lets you press B to go invulnerable at any time which makes the rest of the game pretty easy since you can use it right before something is about to hit you.
elixirs also are your health points, but only when it feels like it, i think rats and bats will take an elixir if they hit you but bigger stuff wont give a shit and still kills you.
the "Fireball" path is also required since later on there are gargoyles or some crazy shit that can only be hit with fireballs, if they grab you they send your sorry ass right to the prison again.
the burger king door leads to the end boss

I love this game! There’s definitely a learning curve to it though. You need to enter the door to the right first to gain the shield, you then go to the one on the left of the black knights door to reach the wizard and then you got through the black knights door to face the boss. The room on the far left is only the exit from the dungeons if you fall in a hole. Also watch the heads of the prisoners to see if they shake to see which is the right key. The key just opens the dungeon door back up.😉

NES rage is real man, it was play the rage inducing game or nothing, because that’s what you rented.
This game looks really interesting. But it really needed to have a complete key remapping and some gameplay modification.
I played it once on the Genesis, but I can't play it without a lot of frustrations...
It's utter trash
i found out recently that it's a port, a very bad one in fact.
@@UltimateGamerCC Times later I found out that it was a port of the Macintosh which is pretty good. It's like I said, if maybe there had been a treatment with the gameplays and keys, it would be a much better game.
The same case happens with PitFighter, as there are many people who think it is one of the worst fighting games because of the SNes version that was poorly ported, with the Genesis and Arcade versions being very good!

Something like choose door 2 (out of 4) and reload until you get a screen with a vulture and vines. That "level" I prefer to start on. The keys let you access the other levels, I think they operate like Zelda keys and are all functionally the same.
You don't have to do these things to yourself, you know. They have doctors now.
The hit boxes in this game are satan.

This game looked so awesome when I was a kid and after renting it I could barely get two screens in. Even then I knew this game was shit.
The only game I’ve ever rented that was worse was that one Driver game where the tutorial was so hard you could never play the game.

Dark Castle has to be played on a Macintosh. It was literally designed to be played with your left hand controlling your character while your right hand aims with the mouse. Dark Castle 2 is even better. It has 2d shooter stages.

a game truly worth raging about, that's for sure, yet there's somebody who beat this game in X minutes, X being unknown because it's been a while since i saw it, basically somebody did a speedrun of Marble Madness, Dark Castle and Jurassic Park (Raptor Mode) in 10 mins, all in one video.

Dark castle is still nowhere near as good as Deadly Towers "Yes i genuinely love that game". Cause of it being one of my few childhood nes games
Try it on Macintosh. It's one of the BEST games.

I grew up on pc games like "Death Race 1 with Dick Deitrich" 3D Dinosaur Adventure ecetera. Whatever games came with the computer
@Hicknopunk Right! I remember playing on my MacBook as a kid and always considered it a good game in retrospect, based on the Mac version at least. It wasn't until the AVGN episode until I realized how cursed the game was. Keyboard and Mouse does this game great justice

I know this is probably an unpopular opinion, but I like it more when you're just hang out playing old games and talking about whatever(sometimes crazy) thing happens to pop into your mind. I'm just not a fan of the raging stuff. I used to deal with it, or sometimes I would even skip it. Right now, it's just not the kind of content I that vibes with me anymore. Anyhow, just wanted to share. Hope you are doing well. Best of luck!

Having a quick look...and it appears that the original version of this game that came out for the Macintosh in 1986 is actually a really good game according to people so you might want to check that one out at least.
Seems like the No.1 contender in that regard as far as shitty console ports go going by this Genesis port and the CD-i port that was in the AVGN episode.
I dont know what it is but this game makes me think of Windows 95 or 98. It's probably the music but their used to be a screensaver and I swear the music sounds exactly the same. BTW if anyone is interested you can apply a windows 98 skin to windows 11 😊
