  • A monk named Shi Yanliang has been daily practicing basic skills for 10 years at the Shaolin Temple, as Shaolin martial arts require a solid foundation, especially when it comes to featured weapons. Shi Yanliang excels at using broadswords, a kind of a weapon often presented in stage performances. The blades are thinner and softer than the traditional broadswords. Crisp sounds are made as one wields them, creating a mesmerizing stage effect.

    No matter what I do,
as long as I do it well
    and stick to it,
    then this is my congfu.
    My body moves fluidly after practicing the same movement 10000 times;
it is the same with weapons.
Everything I encounter in my life is a kind of experience:
Experience is the teacher of everything.

I understand the use of thin swords for the sound, but it could use a little bit more thickness so the swords don’t flop around like a child’s toy and take away from the beauty of the demonstration.

the thinness of the swords also allows them to be moved much faster. the traditional swords are much heavier.

Ive been cut by simple duct work and flashing. Those swords are real enough at those RPMs trust.

These swords are made for practicing, in case of injury, it’ll still cause significant injuries, but it’ll be less likely that you’ll lose a limb or whatever else

This is an amazing video, thank you for sharing. Ive had my doubles for some time now and want to finally take the jump to learning them. I really love what you were sayi g about wrist strength and learning to do things with your non dominant hand to ready yourself for the fluidity of using both weapons.

I practice Taijiquan, many years ago a little Shoalin.
I enjoy trying to use multiple weapons;2,3 or even four at once.
For myself it is not for combat, this is the challenge to increase my dexterity and familiarity with the weapon. If you wish to hold two weapons in one hand ? It is easier if the handles are symmetrical or matching.
It is possible to turn two weapons into one long double ended weapon and spin with one hand or to manipulate them so they both point the same direction.
Try first with thin or narrow sticks, when you can change the position with your fingers of one hand then possibly move onto heavier, larger weapons or swords.
My mix of weapons was the Dao, Jian ,a two short staffs
I hope to eventually do this with four jian swords
This is my Kung Fu ☯️🙏

Shaolin temple is such a magic place. I visited it 25 years ago and have always wanted to visit it again. Now my plan is set - this October.

Have been duel welding for several years now. Incorporating the aerial's is proving difficult. TBI took a balance nerve. Spinning continues after this vessel stopped. Drunken styling ensues unbidden for discombobulated I have become.

Thank you, xixi. Interesting slices of life. This is a side of Chinese history and culture I find fascinating. Glad it is preserved. Were these skills partly developed by Shaolin monks to protect riches in temples?
