    • @Imtahotep
      @Imtahotep 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hope English is 2nd: the story goes that "The Hunter" was sidetracked, tricked by a bunch of girls, who were trying to save all the animals [I kid you not] so after 7 years of blind man's bluff in the gardens with Zeus's daughters, presumably the sweet influences of the Pleiades [or the daughters of Zeus] he then hurled them into the cosmos to become the eponymous constellation along with Orion "The Hunter" chasing the Pleiades eternally, all done evidently without having loosened his belt, which might become much harder to doff if Betelgeuse goes supernova!

    • @Imtahotep

      @Faith take a break. Ask someone who really knows scripture; why is it then that God is asking Job to stand up like a man, gird himself, and declare what he knows about Orion and the Pleiades? Why would God be asking Job such a question?

I have found m42 and am trying to learn as much as I can about the various stars in the constellation. I appreciate the little nuances you add as that helps clarify some nagging questions I had- such as "what does M42 look like through a telescope?" (my scope shows it as a faint smudge) and is the horsehead nebula visible through the scope (which you clarified and stated it was only visible through prolonged exposure). Thank you for all that!!!

    Hitting on the most well known facts about Orion is a great start for aspiring astronomers. What I would like to see is a more in-depth look at Orion. Like for instance, over 90 percent of Orion is filled with what really amounts to a vast nebula complex. this complex also extends well beyond the confines of the constellation, and there are star forming regions throughout it. Also, one thing that should be mentioned is that the stars Betelgeuse and Rigel most likely formed in the same area they now occupy; within that vast nebula complex I mentioned.
    I think of all the constellations in the sky, Orion is not just the most recognizable one but also the most interesting one, due to all of what it has going on within it. It certainly deserves a full hour episode exploring all it has to offer the astronomical community.

      I'm sorry, not quite sure that I understand your comment correctly. One thing I should point out is that the stars that make up a constellation (and the deep sky objects located within in them) often have no physical relationship to one another, it is all pretty much a line of sight effect that makes us perceive them as such.

    • @Gizziiusa
      @Gizziiusa 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dr. Heath. I seem to remember you from years ago. Did you work as a lab assistant in the Biology Dept in the 1990's ? I graduated from UALR, but you probably dont remember me. Anyway, it seems nobody remembers the Andromeda Galaxy being where I thought it was. Oh well. Take care.

    • @darrellheath9776

      I'm afraid the Andromeda Galaxy is where it's always been within the constellation of Andromeda. While it is true that galaxies move (and the Andromeda Galaxy is moving towards us at the rate of 68 miles per second) the distances that separate them from us is so vast that such movements are not discernible within a single human lifetime. Indeed, often times not even over the course of thousands of years.
      Your memory does serve you well though otherwise! I did TA courses in vertebrate zoology, mammalogy, and herpetology back in the day. Take care and thanks for the query!

      @Joshua Jung hahaha... I don't believe you!
      And both you and I know that's not true.. See you're just another atheist "no doubt a progressive" that HATES Christians/Catholics... Why do you fools always go after them?! Why don't you go after Islam?! Oh wait that would be "racist, in-politically correct" 🙄..
      And Islam is not a race.

    I enjoy the Orion stars every night provided it's not cloudy or snowing. I'd have liked to see a representation of Orion in 3D form, as if viewing from the side, not head-on, such as a graph showing the stars closest to earth and those further away.

    Orion is not fending off Taurus, Orion is a Decan of the constellation Taurus. Orion is a supplement to Taurus, it helps to complete the story of Taurus.

    I saw this large star, bright and pulsating , that is 270 degrees, directly diagonally down-left from orions belt near the horizon. I've heard that Capella and Arcturus are bright and pulsate a lot, but would love some assistance in identifying this light. One night it just disappeared, so i wonder if it is a planet or satellite.

      Thanks for your query! Not quite sure what object you were seeing but many stars will twinkle madly when seen low along the horizon. This is because when we look at objects low in the sky we are also looking through a much thicker layer of atmosphere and atmospheric disturbances can make stars twinkle. A lot. Sirius, the brightest star in our night sky (and located down and to the left of Orion's belt) is notorious for putting on a flickering/pulsating show when it is very low in the sky.

      Thank you, this was my question, too! I am in Northern Germany, in the last November days I saw a huge star on the left a little bit lower than Orion. It was so big, I thought if it was Jupiter, but Jupiter was located in the East, if I remember right, and this was South/Southwest. I thought now, too, it must have been Sirius. Thank you! And have a blessed Christmas time! I LOVED the video!

    Orion is the word derived from Tamil language"Horai".(Horaion.) It means "Horary Wheel/ astrology,which was written by the ancient sage called Augusthiar..,who has also predicted many astronomical events,including the star of Bethlehem.
    It is also said that Augusthiar as a great astrologer.,might be one of the three kings.
    The word "Hour" is also adopted from "Horai".Hour (time) is the determinant of the astronomical cycle.
