    Sorry fella you start off with GSD being the guard dog!! also saying they will attack a threat??? Not true by far they are not an aggressive dog by nature. I think you need to do alot more research, also it was not the GSD that was trained to bring down Bore it was the great dane to take them down and the dobiman to kill. Also you say they don't make great family pets, boy you are so so wrong. I've had this amazing bread since i was 16 im now 68 and still to this day they teach me new things all the time. What a privlage and honor to share a life with them.

    Very insightful video. Nayla is now around 10 months old, had her for a month. One of my nephews coworkers was just a multiple of previous owners that gave up on her. So without any of her previous history, I decided to take her in. At the start she was very timid and would not leave my side, and quickly became destructive. Because I work full time, she has gotten used to my work routine, realizes when I have to leave for work, that I'll come home and let her out at lunch, and long walk after work. There is no way to express how loyal, affectionate and protective she is around me.

      I adopted a GSD puppy 3 months ago and I had the same issue. As her second owner she'd never been socialized or taught any commands. It was so sad to see this underweight and scared ball of fluff 😢 but OMG she's loyal and at 10 months old and 26kg she's learning to love people and dogs and she's doing really well 😊 bless you for not giving up your pup 😍🙏 xxx

    I love how well-rounded this was. Many forget that they are originally a herding dog. People ask how I trained mine to round up my birds - I have to admit I didn't - he just got involved - now he thinks they are his job and not mine :)

      @GermanShepherdDaphne 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Same. My GSD just got involved one day when my chickens got out of their pen. She took over herding them up and didn’t try to kill them. They went right back into their coop. They are very intelligent

      Mine LOVES to play fetch with extra balls and he basically taught himself to round them up when it's time to go! I've had dogs all my life, Goldens, Basset, Labs who were all smart dogs, but my 18 month old male GSD has learned new commands in one session and gotten them right from then onward, with very few mistakes. He still amazes me with what he naturally figures out with no help, like the laser pointer I got for the dark long winter with fewer smells! ALL my other dogs would chase it till they dropped. Hendrix saw it, cocked his head, then sat and "woofed" at the hand holding it. Guess I need plans B-Z lol!!

  • @Athelrose
    @Athelrose ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Great video! I disagree that GSDs don't make good housepets. They are definitely not the type of dog that needs to be active 24/7. They absolutely need lots of outdoor play and explore time, and to feel involved in your tasks, but they're actually pretty chill as long as they can just be with you.

      In general I would agree with the working lines. However with the showlines they're not as active or need many active daily exercises.

      I just got a 2 year old that came from a kennel in Germany and his dad was a champion show dog. I’ve never in my life seen such a chill German shepherd at 2 years old. Nothing phases him, he chases the ball for a little while then just decides he’s had enough running 😂 very sweet and follows me everywhere I go in the house. I have never heard him bark once nor growl. Had a puppy come running out of someone’s house right up to him and he just looked at it. Had a couple different shepherds when I growing up and had no idea people bred them down the different lines so it’s really interesting to actually see the difference

      Yours must get enough exercise like mine does. I run him for an hour to 90 min chasing balls and frisbees, and walk him a few miles too. He lounges and snoozes for an hour after but is soon perked up for the next game again. He is only 20 months, but because we get so much activity in he is better behaved than all but two of my other dogs, both Goldens and even they weren't as obedient at the same age. Of course my Basset hound, while a shining star with kids was the by far the least interested in commands if they didn't apply to food or cat poop.

    I was chosen by a German Shepherd 40+ yrs ago. We had a psychic connection that I can’t explain. My boyfriend called me to come to his house. I went over there and as I walked up to the backdoor, a very large, full-grown GS stood up on the top step. She was eye level and stared straight into my eyes. Neither of us blinked. My boyfriend came to the door and told me how he had found her, but couldn’t keep her at his house while we searched for her owner and could she stay with me. Of course! He wanted to name her. It’s Samantha I told him…at least that’s what I’m gonna call her. Well, she followed me to my car and jumped in. We drove home and she followed me into my house. She was exceptionally well behaved and fully housebroken. Since it was Saturday, I couldn’t do anything before Monday when I put her in the lost and found in the newspaper. Tuesday afternoon, her owner called me and described her perfectly…down to the worn collar with a bit of broken chain on it. I asked what her name was….it was Samantha! They came to get her that night. She growled softly and refused to go with them. They had to pick her up and carry her to the car. I cried when they left. On Thursday afternoon, I received a call from them asking if she had come back to my house. They had left her in the house that morning to go to work. When they got home, she had jumped through a picture window and run away again. I promised to call if she showed up, but she never came back. 2 weeks later, I was at K-Mart with my sister to buy puppy supplies. Our cashier was chatting on and on about a very sweet dog who had spent the last 2 weeks sitting at the front door just watching people come and go. She sat there til closing every day and returned every morning. I asked her what kind of dog was it…a German Shepherd, she said. I ran out but she wasn’t there. Then, I looked down the sidewalk and she was sitting there, watching people. I called her and she ran to me and jumped into my arms! I said something about going home and she turned and ran off through the parking lot. I was so disappointed, til I got to the car and she was waiting at the door. We were together from that time on…

    I notice my Shepherd is very alert and attentive. Rather than exploring, he seems to always looking about on walks and in the park, rather than sniffing around. I am trying to understand this behavior in terms of his leash reactivity. I find it harder to train this behavior out of him along with his prey drive.

    New to the GSD show. I have had 4 GSD'S. I believe that you are spot on. My last girl, Jager, was a West German Working line Sable. She was incredible! She oozed the epitome of a GSD. All in a 70lb. Package. I miss her immensely. I am currently looking for a breeder with the proper breeding for my next dog. It will be my first GSD puppy. Jager was 6mo. Old when I got her. I was her 4th home. She was a handful. I am single and work from home, so we were rarely apart. Unlike any previous dogs. I will NEVER have another breed. They are awesome. I'm just like you as in I love the breed. A breeder to look into as my wifey and I have is a Kraftwerk's GSD. He's not our first GSD but the breeder imports German GSD's lines. He is amazing all dogs have their differences but it's night and day from our other GSD which we 1000% loved to death and the reason we went with another GSD.
      I don't have 50 dogs to compare but it incredibly hard to find a good breeder. We could tell our dog had all kinds of attention from the beginning nothing startled him and he loved human contact and command.
      I know its been a year since your reply to the video just thought I'd share my review of one.

    My GSD puppy is from the working line dogs. I've never had a a more high energy, high reactivity, high prey drive dog. Yet she is a well behaved house pet that gets along with my cats. My 2 male orange tabbies LOVE going for walks through the neighborhood with the puppy. And playing chase is something the cats still do with the puppy. The cats intentionally play chase with the puppy. Just this morning they were particularly rambunctious and made the puppy chase them several times while on our morning walks. The cats will also flop over and roll on their backs (showing joy, happiness, content) several times on each walk.
    These walk have been ongoing for over a year, and is the best part of all of our day, dog, cats and me.

    What about the timid GSD? Is that from genetics, poor handling as a puppy, poor socialization,mis that even a real thing? I’m looking at female GSDs of various colors and young ages at GSD rescues and several are in the “shy” category. When I said to one longtime GSD rescue person that I was interested in her 14 mo old puppy and would like to take her to obedience classes in January she told me she wouldn’t be ready to socialize in that kind of setting yet. Hmnn..is that a red flag? I don’t know.. This woman has been rehabbing her after rescuing her from an abusive situation at 4 mos old. If these rescue GSDs were not socialized as puppies, can we correct that with patient training? Do I instead train the dog myself then, when I’m sure of her behavior, socialize her in dog classes?

    I’m more a fan of good working lines myself mainly East German or old Czech going back to DDR lines. I find them higher in natural protection and athletically more able and healthier/ better hip scorers. They tend to mature more slowly though. Some of the west working lines seem to be very pray driven and less defensive and more towards sport. I like the more defensive and less prey driven dogs. Who seem more real in how they guard because it’s less a leant sport driven behaviour out of prey and more natural defensive and instinctive hardness!!
    Don’t ever breed these dogs unless you really really really know what you’re doing and looking for regarding the correct drives and thresholds. To better this breed you have to really know what your talking about because the standard is really high already!!

      Even if your German shepherd is fast asleep you won’t be able to walk out the room to make a brew without the dog being behind you!! But unlike the Doberman there happy to watch from a distance sometimes.

      My experience is that allot of people including my mom will get the impression that there big goofballs until one day something serious happens as in somebody follows you into the house and they go from zero to super protective backing the person up aggressively very fast. Very alert dogs when bread properly.

      @OfficialMixture Exactly.
      I had a rescue Shepherd, without an aggressive bone in his body, basically a big pussy-cat.
      That was how I saw him until one Friday evening when someone snuck into my workshop.
      Someone definitely up to no good.
      I had to physically restrain my boy from ripping this person apart.

      @@lindsaybrown7357To this day it still amazes me how a German shepherd can react in a split of a second and be so sure about the whole situation and be so certain in its mind about what it's going to do. Most creature/ other dogs or people need to take time to think for at least a couple of seconds.

    Intelligent is not a word I would use to describe a German Shepherd... We have bread and raised them for the last 15 years and a lot of them have been run over ...because they weren't smart enough to get out of the way of golf carts and pick up trucks that were going very slow .... they can be trained but it's a lot of work ...nothing worse than a young Shepherd that has not been trained ... I would not recommend this breed for anyone that's not willing to put in a lot of time to train...If you want a smart dog that's easy to train get a Blue Heele ... I could teach my Blue Heeler just about anything in 5 minutes.... Way more obedient in my opinion way more intelligent than the German Shepherd breed ...and way more rewarding to own and you'll never have to cry when you accidentally run over your own dog.

      I'm sorry, but it sounds like you have been breeding a bad line of German shepherds. If they're that damn stupid, you should not be breeding them at all.
