I prefer the body of the 40 slim and the sleeve length on the 38 contemporary. Maybe a 40 contemporary and have it altered. Another nice video though. Thanks! I am getting ready to soon pull the trigger on Spier & Mackay.
Hello great video, may I ask your chest size? I usually take a 38 but the size chart from Spier Mackay says a size 38 is only up to a 38 chest. So between a 38 to 40 chest should size up?
I'm in between 38 and 40 and I usually do 38 contemporary but can also do 40 slim. The shoulders are slightly wide on the 40 and sometimes show a shoulder divot on the 38, so there are issues and benefits each way TBH.
I think the 38’ look the best for my taste. The 40’s look ok as well if you want more of a relaxed fit. Other than the double breasted ones I prefer my summer blazers to be mostly worn open anyway.
These are regular length sizes, right? I am often a short size at just under 5’9 (suitsupply) but the spier and mackay sizing mechanism says I’m a regular. Any thoughts?
Did Spier tell you that? I'm looking at the size guide for suits now and don't see specific heights mentioned though I could be missing it. I would email them to ask. If they already told you, I think the return cost is not bad.
@@gentlemenscholarsclub they have an automated “find your fit” mechanism. It’s not in the size chart itself. I’ve been a suit supply guy forever - but they have seemed to change their sizing some and off the rack doesn’t fit as well. I’ve thought about going indochino, but ran across spier and your video. Lots of fit option with slim and contemporary. Like you, I’m guessing I’m a 40 slim and 38 contemporary, but trying to decide on the length. I’m usually a short.
Good question. I have both contemporary and slim and don't notice a specific difference in are width, but I can measure when I get home and let you know.
Agreed both sizes appear to be good fit which begs this question, which fit/size do you prefer to wear? I watched your Double Breated S&M video and wanted to know your thoughts?
it would look best if you had the shoulders of the 40 but everything else from the 38. the 40 has a better overall shape (broad shoulder narrower waist) but the sleeves and torso are too long
Thanks so much for this video explanation. Its so confusing on their website. No video or photos to compare on their website. This keeps me from buying from them.
Lapel gap can be caused by various things. For me, I find a tailor can take in the collar a bit behind the neck to fix it, but it's a complex issue in terms of cause. Sometimes being too small causes a gap and sometimes just too much fabric around the back of the neck. For example, when I wore a 36 from SuitSupply instead of a 38, I still had gapping. Ring Jacket doesn't gap for me even though it is bigger in fit.
The 40 slim looks better then the 38 contemporary in the double breasted. The 38 looks very straight from the jacket waist down and looks like a blouse almost. The 40 slim fits your body more snugger or at least shows a good silhouette.
I also struggle with a correct jacket length literally all the time ‘cause I’m a shorter guy with a relatively wide V-shaped torso, so sizing up in the chest makes a jacket proportionally longer lengthwise and this is something a tailor usually cannot fix without messing up the button stance. Thanks for bearing with me till the end of the comment 😅
@@gentlemenscholarsclub thanks for that video. May I ask for you chest and shoulder measurements? I find it extremely difficult with the sizing of them.
I like the 40 slim on you - it looks more relaxed and classic on you- the contemporary was a bit too tight.

Think the 40 slim looks better on you. 38 c looks to be pulling with the quarters splaying outwards instead of laying closed.
it's open quarters, it's supposed to splay
Slim 40 looks better in my opinion, probably a bit more comfortable to wear also
The second two look banging on you. Great video thanks
Oh thank you!

Spier Mackay’s sizing chart has never seemed to list anything on sleeve width. Is there a difference here from contemporary to slim fit?

For DBs I prefer to go down in size to a 38 slim or contemporary rather than a 40 slim. For single-breasted, I do a 38 contemporary these days.

The 40 w/slightly shorter sleeves would be best.
i have a lapel gap with 46L and 46 regular contemporary.. you think sizing down to 44 will fix the problem?

Thanks this video helped can I ask your height and weight I also take a 38
Sorry for the delay--5'11" and about 165 pounds give or take some big meals.
Button stance too high.... centre button should be at or only slightly above natural waist

Nah, I don't get any commissions, but you can tell them it was me since Kent and I have some informal conversations online.
so what do you do?
Which fabric did you choose for your navy coats?
This is their twill.
I would say a 40 slim fits you much better in both styles.
A better comparison would’ve been to compare a 38 Slim to a 38 Contemporary
what is your height and weight?
also great channel im subscribed good luck
5'11" and 165 lbs

What is your height ?
5 foot 11.
38 contemp fs imo.
I can't tell if you're hired or if I am.
The contemporary looked more natural and better fitting
Noted. Thanks!
the 38s look a tad better but great fits overall.
Slim 40 looks much better on you
Dude you're 40 on both for sure. You look uncomfortable in the 38.
