For MK fans this movie will always be the best mk movie, because fans see it with different eyes, you didn`t even saw a difference in the ninjas, green reptile, blue sub zero, yellow scorpion, for you its just the same guy again. but fans know the background of each character. just saying , because the mk fanbase is gigantic.

The '90s were a weird time for violence. There was huge pushback against violence in movies. Remember the TMNT: Secret of the Ooze? The turtles weren't allowed to use their weapons as weapons. The studio wanted to make a martial arts film because those were incredibly popular at the time, but since it's based on a popular video game they were restricted to making it PG-13. They wanted to market it to the kids who played the game. And the Goro fights had to be short because he was a puppet. They could only do so much, but that puppet completely blew people's minds in 1995.
I love this movie because the fights are well-choreographed (with long shots that aren't over edited), the music is incredible, and as a 12-year-old, Sonja Blade was Important to me. It definitely doesn't live up to expectations of violence, but it's fun.

"A handful of people on a leaky boat are gonna save the world?"
"Exactly! The essence of Mortal Kombat is not about death, but life. Mortal men and women defending your own world."
Fun Fact: The film's soundtrack went platinum in less than two weeks.
Kombat Location Fact: The Thailand locations were so remote they were only accessible by boat. Cast, crew, and equipment had to be transported by long canoes. An outhouse was built in a secluded area near the set so that the crew didn't have to make constant trips to and from the mainland.
Missed Kombat Cameo Fact: Steven Spielberg, an avid fan of the Mortal Kombat series, was set to make a cameo appearance as the director in Johnny Cage's first scene but scheduling conflicts forced him to back out. Nonetheless, the "director" character in this scene does resemble Spielberg, likely as a homage.
Best Kombat Fact: The film was originally due for a May 1995 release, but was pushed to August after test screening audiences loved what they saw, but thought there weren't enough fights. Extensive reshoots were done to extend the Johnny Cage vs Scorpion fight, as well as add in the Liu Kang vs Reptile fight. In the original cut of the film, Johnny Cage was supposed to defeat Scorpion with the shadow kick in the forest as opposed to being sucked into a portal created by the latter. As for the Reptile scene, it originally ended with his reptilian form being sucked into the gargoyle body (as seen in the final cut), but not actually morphing into the green ninja. Basically this implied that the gargoyle had become his tomb and no actual fight took place. Ironically, these two fights are considered to be the best of the film, most likely because Robin Shou was the exclusive fight choreographer for the reshoots as opposed to the credited choreographer, Pat E. Johnson. For these fights, Shou used wire-work martial arts techniques that he had employed as a stuntman in Hong Kong. Although these techniques became mainstream following the release of The Matrix (1999), Mortal Kombat (1995) was actually the first big Hollywood film to use them.

    • @BigGator5
      @BigGator5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sure you can nitpick this movie to death. But for everything they get wrong, they get ten things right. Yes it is PG-13, however the Johnny Cage vs Scorpion and Liu Kang vs Reptile are the best fights out of all the great fights in this movie. Kano was a Japanese-American assassin in the game, but became an Australian brawler after this movie because of Trevor Goddard's fun performance. The CGI does indeed look bad, but Goro is practical and holds up to this day. The casting is on point 100%, in my opinion.

in my own opinion; Goro is way better in this movie than in the reboot. sure, he may look better and actually looks like his video game counterpart, but the 95 Goro is the better choice in my own opinion. he has more screentime, has two fights rather than one, and he has a ,pun intended, large presence in this movie but only when our heroes get to the tournament. also, he's voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson who reprised the role in Mortal Kombat: Scorpion's Revenge, which is an awesome animated movie. Goro is also played by Tom Woodruff Jr, who was the dog Xenomorph in Alien 3.

A lot of the deal with the Mortal Kombat movie was that it was the first successful and "decent" video game movie adaptation at the time. We had to put up with the awful Super Mario Bros. movie, Double Dragon, and Street Fighter. It would be another 6 after MK released until we got another decent video game adaptation with Tomb Raider.

Definitely not disappointing but then she admitted shea not into MK so makes sense why she'd feel that way. Its still considered the best video game movie due to the accuracy. Back in the 90s you didn't get gory video game movies because at the time in 95 their main demographic were kids so Rated R mk at the time wouldn't fly. Still considering this was pg still pretty messed up, brutal kills people getting shot point blank, necks snapped, set on fire, explode, frozen and shattered and impaling so they Definitely pushed the envelope for 95 for a pg 13 rating. Great movie.

Oof. I could write a whole-ass dissertation about this movie franchise, lol, but I'll try to keep from rambling too much here.
Overall, I find this movie much more enjoyable than the new remake. However, this movie does have some failings. First of all, it only got a PG-13 rating, which is nuts for a movie based off a video game franchise known for its over-the-top blood and gruesome violence. So you're definitely right that the action is a let-down in that regard. I also am not a fan that Bridgette Wilson-Sampras (Sonya) insisted on doing her own fight choreography. I commend her for putting forth the effort to learn a little bit and do the work, but because she's not a fighter in real life, her fights are seriously toned down compared with what they could be if a real fighter had been used instead, which is a shame for female representation in this setting in general but also for Sonya Blade herself, who is one of the most badass characters in the franchise. Scorpion and Sub-Zero are also dealt a huge disservice in this movie, but they are in the remake as well. But this movie at least does have some cheesy fun and stays reasonably within the feel of some of the video games, particularly the earlier ones (which makes sense, given that the movie came out in 1995, before much of the franchise had developed yet).
The remake, on the other hand, was a gigantic let-down for me. I've been a fan of the series for a long time and have played and owned many of the games, so I'll admit that I had high expectations, but still. The few plusses that I'll give the remake are the R rating, the opening fight between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, and how cool they made Kung Lao. Beyond that, everything else is just a bummer. There's no emotion behind the story really, and too many characters are thrown in with no exploration, instead just there essentially to be a cameo in a poor attempt to appeal to fans of the games. They have that stupid arcana plot-line, which wasn't a thing in the games. Worse, they go the route of "you're a combatant if you have a dragon tattoo, oh but you can also kill someone to take theirs" which is ludicrous, and also results in side-lining Sonya for most of the movie in favor of the male characters, which, 1) give me more female representation dammit and 2) as I said before, she's one of the most badass characters, so why is she just in the sidelines for so long?? I just don't understand how, with a franchise as long-lasting and rich with lore as Mortal Kombat, especially by 2021, they could come up with such a boring movie. Also, why in God's name did they create the character Cole Young? He's not a part of the franchise, so creating him doesn't appeal to the existing fans when revolving the story around him so much means that we don't get a chance to see characters that we do love. He's basically there to be the "I don't know what's going on, so I'm a proxy for the audience to learn things" character, but most people who would go see such a movie are people who already know what's going on because they're already fans! There's so many different characters and storylines and whatnot that already exist in the Mortal Kombat franchise that would have been incredible to adapt into a movie, but instead we get some dipshit wimp who's descended from a more interesting character, and we have to go the same old tired, over-used, boring-as-fuck trop of "man has to do thing to protect wife and daughter," which I'm so sick of seeing.
So yeah, while I certainly won't defend Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation as being perfect movies, or ever stellar representations of the franchise, I will die on this hill of insisting they are much more enjoyable than the remake. That said, I don't fault you at all for your opinion or your feelings after watching this one, as you're certainly entitled to them. And I know that much of my stance comes from growing up with these movies and also diving so deep within the games. Just wanted to seize the opportunity to vent my feelings into the void, haha!
Thanks as always for your reactions and your thoughts about movies. I like that you pay good attention and think critically about what you're watching. It makes it a lot more enjoyable than other reactions sometimes are. ^_^

Thanks for all the good info 🙂 I will say this, the fans of this movie are very gracious and understanding about my opinion on it, and I actually don’t hate the movie either. I think a rewatch would be a better experience for me. 💜

Sorry you were disappointed. The new Mortal Kombat movie that came out last year does have blood and gore, if you’re interested.

I have seen that, and it was my favorite part! 🤣 I did like it overall, just was surprised by the lack of graphic violence. I think if I weren't expecting that it would have not have disappointed me, or if I'd grown up with it. That's the risk you take when you don't see old movies in their time. 😄

Watched the original Power Rangers (1995) and No Retreat, No Surrender (1986) recently. And I have to say, never rewatch your favorite childhood movies. You'll notice how cheesy they really are...same with Mortal Kombat.

The sequel to this movie, Mortal Kombat Annihilation is a bad movie because it is too cheesy and a few of the characters were recasted.

This is a great example of a movie based on some source material that the film makers know/care nothing about. But if you're going to react to shitty video game movies, then you have to react to the ultimate shitty video game movie - "Super Mario Bros" with Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. That is an absolute shit show.
