Such a memorable film. Saw it in theaters, its a wild ride but its meant to go buck wild. It came out at a time when going to the movies was pure fun. It didnt have to try hard at all, and it worked. The critics might have hated it, but its a cult classic. I'd love to see this in theaters for special occasions like on Halloween.
One way to make the dark universe work, would be to have a singular protagonist or antagonist deal with each one in a film where you can bring multiple monsters together or solo entries, but there needs to be that trough line.
Definitely underrated and you're right, it IS what the Dark Universe failed to do in *two* movies. If anything, the cheesy, over-the-top melodramatic tone perfectly matches what you'd expect from a throw-back to 1930's Universal monster movies. There was a novel tie-in that I read and something that I wish the movie included was the fact that Van Helsing has a triangular scar on his back that is implied to be where his wings were once located. That's right, he's LITERALLY the archangel Gabriel and in the film, he admits that his earliest memory is "fighting the Romans at Masada" (the Siege of Masada in 73 AD/CE) so it's implied that he showed up to fight on the Israelites' (and presumably God's) behalf. Holy shit, that's something that we needed to have in the movie. I also love the weapons, especially those hand-held buzz-saws, and the creature designs are kick-ass, especially the werewolves (I love werewolf media). I mean, instead of just transforming, the "Van Helsing" werewolves literally *rip off their own skin* to become these lupine monsters. How awesome is that?! Also, yeah, Kate Beckinsale in tight pants, a leather corset and high-heel boots is frickin' hot as hell. Thank you, Stephen Sommers!
This movie has my favorite werewolf designs (admittedly I haven't seen too many other werewolf movies, but still), I really love that they have different colors, they didn't just reuse the same model for all three of them. And that final battle is pretty hilarious, Dracula has been so used to easily killing his opponents that when he's finally confronted with a real threat it triggers his flight response hahaha
I was a teenager when this movie came out. I watched it most nights when I had to babysit my sisters and the younger one was four... I told her to look away and suddenly I heard her laughing when the cow came out of the church. This movie and the mummy have become very important to my and my sisters. Heck! Even my nephews (6 and 2) are now watching them. This movie was always fun, nobody can change my mind about it.
The way they created the werewolves was always my fav. When I rewatched this movie I was surprised how good they looked in that time. Van Helsing is one of my favorite vampire movies.
The werewolf and dracula design is definitely the best in movie till this day. But in terms of something the dark universe tried to do, I'll say League if Extraordinary Gentlemen did it well, Van Helsing did good but didn't focus on that. Also I think it's about time you get yourself a 3D printed Deathstroke mask, it would be awesome to see
I actually forgot how cgi heavy this movie was lol Still best werewolf design by a longshot, except the OG lycans. The shapeshifting lycans had more of a frog face than a wolf face imo.. They did the werewolf here justice strenghtwise also. In underworld, they felt to disposable and squishy.
I remember the videogame had a secret cutscene that would show van helsing resurrecting through lightning. I didn't know his origin was angel associated. Great video
Fun fact: Brendan Fraser's The Mummy and Hugh Jackman's Van Helsing were actually wriiten AND directed by the same guy, Stephen Sommers! He also served as a producer on Van Helsing, and for the animated The Mummy tv series!

The animated film is good too. This film should have begun the monsterverse with him hunting down the monsters in each film. I absolutely loved this movie as a kid, this and the leauge of extraordinary gentleman. Wich both recieved a lot of hate over the years but recently people are starting to appreciate them . Its my favorite flavor of fantasy
Bram Stroker's Dracula which is where Van Helsing made his debut came out in 1897, Blood of Elves, the first novel in the Witcher saga came in 1997. So you're good, Van Helsing predates Geralt.
The point was never about the original character from the Dracula novel, this version of Van Hellsing which hunts all kinds of supernatural creatures has pretty much nothing in common with the character from the book other than the name.
Love the factual discourse! Why can i keep coming back to Van Helsing every couple of years? Because it embraces itself and say "I love you, you dumb big thing you". They already have the setup for everything with the monks and Mejai. All they need to do is bring them together. Bonus: in a world of reboots and sequels from 20 years ago, now is the perfect time. I would love to see Van Helsing take Sean Connery's place as the leader of the League. Or Blade was around about that time have Van Helsing and Blade team up to go after a Vampire Jack the Ripper.
I know Zaffy is going to zero me, but Kate Beckinsale outfit should be in Underworld. She looks more like a vampire queen in this movie than her Underworld.

There's another kickass movie with similar vibe and cinematic universe thingy called The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. It has Captain Nemo, Invisible Man, Quartermain, Edward Hyde, Mina Harker, ect.
Hell yeah this movie kicks ass, this movie had the best looking Werewolf I've ever seen and lore behind the movie oh my God every time I rewatch this movie I want more I wanna know about Van Helsing and see more monsters in this universe. everyday I always prey to whatever God is out there that Stephen Sommers will come out of retirement and direct a Van Helsing 2 because I mean Hugh Jackman came back as Wolverine in Deadpool and Wolverine so who's to say he would never come back as Gabriel Van Helsing in a Van Helsing 2 so never say never.😭🙏
EASILY one of my all-time favorite movies. The characters are simple but well-played, the music sticks with you, the action is actually very well done and well-paced, the monster designs are THE STUFF OF LEGEND, it actually had a couple scenes that were visually striking in an unsettling way, and THAT ENDING. This movie's a thrill ride if ever there was one. I love it.
Thank you so much for making this video bro! This is one of my childhood favorite movies and I sometimes feel like I'm the only person on the planet who's seen it😂
It's funny you mentioned The Creature From The Black Lagoon in the context of a Van Helsing movie. If I remember correctly, The Creature was to be one of the monsters in a potential sequel.
This movie is a hundred times better than every other Vampire/Werewolf movie that came after it. I swear, Van Helsing is my ULTIMATE BEST VAMPIRE/WEREWOLF MOVIE in cinematic history. This movie has my favorite Werewolf and Vampire designs of all time, unlike the other movies in which those creatures look more like deformed Humans rather than ACTUAL MONSTERS. Hugh Jackman and the actor who played Dracula absolutely killed it as the ultimate rival duo in this movie. This is just my opinion but Van Helsing can definitely look at modern-day monsters (not the Kaijus) like Jason Vorhee, Michae Myers, Freddy, etc. , scoff at them, and kill them in the most casual way possible while drinking whiskey or smoking cigars. In fact, this movie is so good that I genuinely believe that other directors use this movie and the Underworld series (the first Trilogy only) as the reference for ALL VAMPIRE/WEREWOLF MOVIES that came after it. If the movies CAN'T DO BETTER THAN these two, I don't even bother watching their trailers.
Great video, Zaffy. talking about this highly underrated & fun early 2000's film. I think this. the Underworld films. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen film & the Devil May Cry games. are all in the same universe, because they feel very similar to each other. but in a good way. :)
The Mummy would've made a great villain if they ever made a sequel to this movie. Not the bandaged zombie of later universal films, but the sorcerer obsessed with bringing his dead girlfriend back to life and ruling the world. Maybe with a Nile River version of the Gillman serving as his henchman.
I don't know how to classify this movie, gothic adventure maybe. It's great anyway, this and The Mummy back to back is one helluva adventure double feature
3:45 this wasn't the first time they tried this. I remember seeing Van Helsing as a kid and trying to figure out how he'd show up in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 2.

I would love to see Van Helsing take Sean Connery's place as the leader of the League. Or Blade was around about that time have Van Helsing and Blade team up to go after a Vampire Jack the Ripper.
Oh yeah, absolutely
Oh i agree him in Van Helsing was my favorite. Such a great movie and man did i want more to see get uncovered.
I enjoyed van helsing! Best portrayal of a werewolf on the big screen to date. Dracula untold is so underrated! It was great! Wish it had a sequel
You missed why Ric in the Mummy was cool. He is the man everyone tries to be but brings the standard sence of adventure.
I know Zaffy is going to zero me, but Kate Beckinsale outfit should be in Underworld. She looks more like a vampire queen in this movie than her Underworld.
While I agree the only thing is underworld is supposed to be a more modern setting
She looks hella hot in underworld. Would not change it. Short hair. ❤
Deep Rising, Mummy, Mummy Returns, and Van Helsing were all great entertainers. Odd Thomas is another pretty awesome movie by Stephen Sommers.
Van Helsing is another classic Halloween film we’d watch every year.
I love Van Helsing. Screw the critics. We need a sequel.
I agree with everthing that you said.
The Werewolves and Vampires in Van Helsing still the Best ones designs.
The three vampire Sisters are so hot especially the red head her personality was awesome.
The good news is Van Helsing is a doctor who appeared in Bram Stoker's novels back in 1897. So he definitely predated the Witcher.
Dude, when you put up those slides of Ms. Beckinsale I nearly pissed myself laughing. You've got to get a grip!. Fantastic video as ever, please keep them coming. You are becoming part of my life.😃😃😃😃
I liked this movie, growing up.
I also liked "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"
This is one of my childhood favorite movies and I sometimes feel like I'm the only person on the planet who's seen it😂
Already know it's another banger!
You know what dude? You’re f****** hilarious. Subbed.
It's funny you mentioned The Creature From The Black Lagoon in the context of a Van Helsing movie. If I remember correctly, The Creature was to be one of the monsters in a potential sequel.
There's a good movie in Van Helsing, but it doesn't live up to the awesome concept but Hugh Jackman's cool and awesome video.
Solomon Kane had a live action film back in the day and was a gem imo.
And Jonah Hex. All 3 films are a bit strange but someway cool the same time.
Just saw you for the first time in a video you posted not too long ago. I can’t wait to watch your underworld series.
Best depiction of Dracula was Netflix 3 part mini series Dracula. I dare anyone to argue it
Great video, Zaffy. talking about this highly underrated & fun early 2000's film.
Bro please make a video about the first two Brendan Fraser mummy movies. Omg it’s so underrated but I do love Van Helsing too.
Here after your stranger things video. Found a new channel to binge watch. Subbed!!!
I don't know how to classify this movie, gothic adventure maybe. It's great anyway, this and The Mummy back to back is one helluva adventure double feature
You're incredible! Really enjoyed this video. 😊😉
Van Helsing was a great movie. It was a fun adventure and a great homage to its legacy characters. And Richard Roxborough was awesome as Dracula 🧛
3:45 this wasn't the first time they tried this. I remember seeing Van Helsing as a kid and trying to figure out how he'd show up in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 2.
Michael is the right hand, and gabriel is the left hand of God
