Jonas is an underrated descender imho: I looked very closely at the descents the peloton rode down during several mountain stages, and I noticed that throughout this Tour the Dane has been choosing good apex lines and he often got almost too close to the rider ahead of him, as a result of better turning trajectories (for example descending the Joux Plane with Pogacar).
Today in this TT he went flat out in the descent after the first côte, taking many risks that eventually payed him back

    • @geuros

I've been saying this since the TDF 2022. He doesn't use that ability because rarely do GC contenders need to close gaps in descents... but he is consistently showing great descending skills. But today we saw him tap out that daredevilness.

Just watched highlights from TDF 2021 TT stage 5.
Noticed that back then, Jonas finished 3rd, faster than both Roglic and Van Aert, and almost same time as Stefan Küng who was a TT monster back then. Only beaten for real by Pogacar who won the stage. And not a mountain TT as in 2023 but an almost flat route of 27 km!
So all the comments about Jonas "suddenly" performing at TT compared to earlier are not in line with reality. He´s always been a very strong TT rider but has obviously improved even further during 2022 and 2023.

    • @TellusJD
      @TellusJD 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Very true but not only that, pogacar has never won over Jonas in a third week TT. Only in prologues or 1rst week TTs in TDF he is 3 out of 3 better time 2021,2022,2023 in the third weeks TT. Last year he also had the win of the TT was it not for the fact he gifted the victory to van aert. He was up in time on van aert but sat up and celebrated the last 2 ks. Loosing him about 20 - 25 seconds in time checks vs van aert. it was the last stage of tdf and he had then won it. But again fairly flat TT and long, but with some hills.
The real thing is people have slept since 2021 on how good this guy is maybe due to his humble nature and never bragging, + his team having this team PR that its the team that does everything team work etc. Which is somewhat true but really also false. As you only need half decent riders to win a TDF when you have the best rider.Only in 2023 are people waking up, some still believe pogacar to be stronger but it was just his wrist injury.
Id rather say it was pogacar who was somewhat lucky in 2021, that both Jonas and roglic crashed that stage pogacar won 5 minutes on that early stage in tdf 2021. As Jonas caught up in time and never lost time for the rest of the race.

If you compare Jonas with the other riders, he attacked every corner, every round about like he was being chased by hungry cannibals.. He didn't change bikes and he rode the course SEVERAL times while Pogi made backflips in the pool. He did bet his life on that stage and he showed unheard technical skills. Vingegaard's default position seemed to look a lot more aero than other riders especially in the curvature of his back in relation to his helmet, and as he rode seemed to maintain that very aggressive aero position for much longer than a lot of the other riders. Did we just witness Jonas revolutionize ITT? He took the corners like madman.
Roglic's final ITT performance in the Giro, was insane as well compared to Tadej smoking him in 2020. We also saw similar performances in the last TDF TT with Jonas able to green the rest of the field behind Wout and Tadej before he slowed down. So believable on more ends than just one or two outliers.
I'd personally say the main decider came down to weight though. I'd say Tadej was right on changing the bike for weight reasons but Jonas' overall system weight is so much less so even if he doesn't have the power he could still have a higher W/kg rating. Granted, there was other stuff like the aero losses due to bike change but Jonas still takes it regardless of time gap. And Wout Van Aert in third is well. . . Wout, no-one else has the performance to go after 2 weeks of racing, we saw the same top 3 in Stages 18 and 20 in last year's TDF.
I predicted Jonas just needed one huge time gap and defend the rest and well I think we found out which stage that was on.

At first I thought this was unbelievable, and I still think this is an outrageous performance by Jonas, where everything just went perfect for him, but I also think that it is explainable the more you think about it:
The dare-devil decent: +20sec (confirmed by time check)
Jonas probably keeping his powder drier during the first two weeks and fully concentrating on the TT probably adds another 10sec. on the flat
    No bike change: +20sec
JV keeping it aero on the climb while Pog visibly struggling, getting out of the saddle, swinging and (admitted himself in the post-race interview) not feeling to good on the climb: +40sec
And having the time trial bike at the flatter end: 8sec
(Obviously I didn't check every part of the stage and time difference, so just a rough guess)
So I'd say it adds up pretty logically and it's at the most 50% pure physical performance that made the difference.

A lot of people comparing Jonas and Wouts times, just ridiculous, Wout has been absolutely booting it for 2 weeks on every stage and weighs 18kg more than Jonas....thats gonna have huge implications on a mountain TT.
Jonas' descent was pretty scary if im honest, he absolutely railed it and looked like he was pushing too hard several times...no surprising he took a lot of time there.
Pog looked visibly uncomfortable and pretty tired too. Also noticed on the start Pog has a cold sore...such things can be a sign of things not being 100% internally. Also worth mentioning Jonas apparently has the second largest V02 Max recorded.....97 at 17 years old... and he's only 60kg. Dude is gonna kill this kind of TT every single time.

Unless Vingegaard has a total off day tomorrow and Pogačar rises like a phoenix. Personally, i think Vingegaard will further extend his lead in the mountains. On Dutch tv there was an interview with A guy at Jumbo Visma who explained how they tackled this TT from the start of march, with over 30 people at JV that work on perfecting their riders performances this TT. They decided all the way in march they wouldnt do a bike-change for instance, and they have so many analists that almost work like a formula1 team in terms of performance-bettering. Tadej had A great day, Jonas had A super day, but as far as I see it, the biggest difference was the team and the preperation. At JV they make cycling, and especially something they have controle over like A TT, into A science. The difference in money, the millions that Pogacar makes more than Jonas, goes into the team at JV, with this kind of stages as A result.

In all the most doped up years of the sport the dominance of a single rider was never so significant, probably because doping more than anything levels the field and removes some of the edge those with massive talents have. So I think this more than anything indicates the peloton in general is cleaner than it has been for many years.

Seems like the heat really affected Pogi today - found it weird he didn't have an ice bag considering he's struggled with the heat before. The first few meters and the first turn from Jonas was a perfect indication of what was to come. The way he attacked the turns and corners was pure perfection, and his performance today overshadows what an amazing tt it was from Pogi. Pogi outclassing WVA is an incredible achievement considering the stage, but Jonas with probably one of the best tt of all time. 3 Danes in top 10 is also a great accomplishment. Looking forward to the next few days where Pogi has to risk it all.

Vingegaard has been real confortable and exudes a calm confidence that is already messing with pogačar's mind.
The only good thing about this result, is that it will take the pressure off pogačar and it's absolutely gloves off for tomorrow, that will break the tactical side of things which will be great for the show.
With pogačar now with nothing to lose, maybe it will suit him better, but it's not looking good for him at the moment.
What an incredible performance from vingegaard, absolutely insane.

A ITT in the third week of the TdF is not a great representation of ITT skills in general. It's all about restitution and stamina at that point and Vingegaard clearly is the rider that is recovering best after mountain stages, which is why he's in yellow.
If the ITT was in the first week and mostly flat, WVA would most likely have won.

With a simple linear extrapolation, Indurain should beat any competition by almost 5 minutes to match this performance. Congrats on the superb result but questions can be asked in the near future.

Indurian was by all chance not clean, we know he beat guys who later admitted they where using EPO etc. when we know they didn’t have neither the science, technology, training, diet etc. of today, this is unlikely to been achieved any other way then doing doping. Also the physical characteristics of the riders back then was different. Induraun is an almost mountain compared to Jonas over 10kg heavier, rode a much heavier bike and still got those numbers - put two and two together! The same with Armstrong these where physically impossible as climbers, weight and size simply speak completely against it. Both Jonas and Tadej are about 10kg lighter and still these blokes achieve those numbers… yeah they where all heavily on doping as also been proved. Indurain was just never caught with other then Salbutamol and he always was a slippery eel on the question

I made no comment about Pogacar but sure- he destroyed the field in this ITT but Jonas beat Pog by even the bigger margin. The data points are real - they both are total outliers which is extremely suspicious. I don't buy technology advantage - the peleton itself is much faster because of it. @@maciejzieniewicz4301 Doping is not giving you 5%, because you be busted today if you used anything like that. Why we went from EPO to blod doping, to micro doping, and most often stimulants etc. it’s 1-2% gain doping today might give you and we went from plus 80% using it to an expected 10-30% in professional sports. This is much lower then the effective gain of 5-10% in the past. There legal stuff that also results in a similar 1%, something we know Jonas ain’t using. But many using it are actually often not top riders, but riders on lower ranked team with less funds and to
Keep up some of these might resolve to doping. The top athletes are less likely because of they get to lose the most, run on teams who are far in front, who test their riders more and there legal stuff they are fully allowed to use that result in similar gain.
