@Nightvisionlol It's not a netbook, it has a full sized, keyboard, trackpad, screen which is very high res. It also has that flash memory and a dual core processor. It's just an expensive underpowered laptop.
@chetopuffs The RAM is soldered on directly, as is the SSD. If you look at the video of Steve Jobs releasing this MacBook Air you'll see some inside shots and the board that all of the computer is on it tiny. The batteries take up most of the space.
@chetopuffs I have an Asus EeePC 900. It was never useful - the keyboard is crap, the SSD is dog slow, the screen is bad. It turned me right off the whole netbook thing. But I am seriously considering the 11' Air. I have some concerns though: 1) It's a thin case and I've heard these things can warp easily. 2) The specs are poor for 2010. My 2006 MacBook is, on paper at least, far more capable. 3) I've read the SSDs degrade with time.
According to ZD Net teardown of the 11" model. They say that the RAM is soldered to the MOBO. No real surprise there. Do you know if this is true of the 13" model? Just wondering if I can upgrade the RAM myself or not.
I strongly believe that many people are undervaluing the benefits of the solid state drive that the macbook air has. Yes the specs are not super high but that doesnt matter with a solid state drive!! It will run as if it had a 3.0ghz processor on a standard drive. this machine will beat many more expensive desktops with high specs on a speed test. This is the future of laptops.
@chetopuffs I have to agree with Danny. Although the 11-inch is netbook dimensions, both sizes of MacBook Air have far better performance and features than a netbook. I have used netbooks and they are not that impressive for doing anything more than surfing and email. Yes, you pay a premium for Apple, but this is a very impressive performer.
@shayanaijaz Because you can do anything without noisy dvd drives. Almost everything is digital these days, games etc. you can buy/download them from internet without the need of physical media.
nice clip! BUT: this clip is NOT available in my country (germany). i had to vpn-tunnel my way here. could you please check what music you did use that is "not allowed" over here? cheers!
@dragonmustard2 Actually the air does have an SSD. If you unscrew a 2.5" or 1.8" inch SSD, you will find the flash drive, Apple has just took this drive and soldered it onto the logic board. btw flash storage is still faster than SSD due to improved and advanced microprocessors and NAND technology.
@Nightvisionlol its not in the netbook range thats why its that price and because it is in the ultraportable range which is more expensive and more powerfull
I really do wish macs werent so expensive, i know they're very good quality, my mom has a fairly new imac, but still being in highschool and having to buy one yourself...its kinda tough. Eventually, i'm looking forward to either a 15" or 17" macbook pro to run crazy fps in WoW.
@Danny77uk 3) The SSD's speed does decline over time because of constant cell re-writes. I'm willing to bet that it has an MLC architecture, because SLC cost a ton. This adds to the problem because with MLC, each cell holds 2 bits, and not necessarily for the same Bite. Thus, more re-writes. SSD do have a measurable shelf life and with it having a proprietary form factor. It could be a costly fix. But really 3-4 years from now you'll be looking for a new net-book anyway.
@dfoggin According to the tear-down of the 11" that ZD Net did the SSD is not locked down, but it is proprietary. It is connected with a (mSATA) mini-SATA port. If you have some documentation to the contrary please send it my way. I assume this is true in the 13". What's good for the goose, is good for the gander. Which kind of makes my question about whether the RAM is soldered in the 13" moot. However; I still would like to know for sure.
@shayanaijaz the "badass-ness" of the air is ultra portability...you pick one up and you think its a toy, and no way it can be a full functioning computer (well, functioning without an optical drive).
@Danny77uk 2) Its a net-book (I don't care what others say, Its a netbook) and with that in mind the spec are solid Don't forget it has a dedicated GPU, and thats going to help a lot. However, I'm going to bump up to the 13" with the 2GHz CPU, go big or go home. Another thing to think about is AMD's new bobcat chip. I haven't seen any real world bench marks yet but its supposed to overcome the Intel's Atom. If your going for a netbook you might want to look into that.
@shayanaijaz I know apple doesn't like to call this a net-book, but it is. Thou be it, a really nice net-book. I have been using an ASUS EEE PC (net book) for years now in combination with a full PC. I have never missed an optical drive Netbooks are meant for on the go use and who carries DVD's around. I do like having physical media for back ups, but you can buy a external super drive for only like $80 or just connect wirelessly to your desktop. All and all I'm giving up my EEE for one of these
@backstageblues sorry if i am spoliing your party but do u know when the macbook air line up is due for refresh..? i need to buy one too for business school and torn between 11 and 13 inch..thank you.
@davomrmac You miss understood I'm saying that the this spec are fabulous considering that it is a net-book. Way better than anything I've seen to date. Again I want to see what the benchmarks for AMDs new Bobcat, but I feel that if your going to get a net-book this is the way to go I don't expect the Air to do the FX rendering, HD video editing, or copulation of any code for me, because its a net-book, but I do expect better a web surfing, video watching, and general use experience than my EEE
@chetopuffs My apologies, if you look at 04:22 in the video of Steve Jobs releasing it, you do see that the SSD is removable but on, as you said, a proprietary connector. If you look at 6:17 on the same video you'll see him walking you through and I do believe the RAM is a somewhat permanent fixture, though it's hard to tell. The youtube video suffix is /watch?v=VdxrAZH9J5o
@CYNFELYN23 Actually there was a clip which showed the macbook air doing some video editing, while it is not as fast as the pro it certainly handled it fine (and this is on the 11 inch). So I would say it is fine for "light video editing"
@Danny77uk Yeah I have the EEE 1000H. I love the thing...for what it is. It was great for going to class, writing some code, taking notes, and watching TH-cam at work. (Oh, on campus job how I miss thee) 1) Warping sounds like a real problem, but if It doesn't do it in the first 3 years (Protection plan) its not going to.
@pochoun33137 i completely agree. instant on is totally bullshit. for the cold boot though, someone needs to do a comparison between an ssd and the new air's flash drive directly on the board whatever crap.
I'm watching this on 2019 😂
:D many thanks.
I also bought one in 2019 😂🤣

watching 8-26-21
Many thanks 👍🏻
i'M sittin here waitin for u to open the computer already.

Weight 1 MBP = 1.5 MBA.
Not a big enough difference to warrant the extra price for lower hardware in my opinion.
is that your new opening dave
also my dad is thinking of getting this or the normal macbook normally he does email browse the net what do you suggest
@chetopuffs It's not upgradeable on the 13 inch model. Apple simply used the same mobo, and used the leftover space to put in a SD card reader.
Great video! Correction, the current White UNIBODY MacBook is indeed a unibody construction, just out of plastic not Al.
@chetopuffs I have an Asus EeePC 900. It was never useful - the keyboard is crap, the SSD is dog slow, the screen is bad. It turned me right off the whole netbook thing.

Apart from the increased battery life and multi-trackpad are there other incentives for owners of the previous MBA (2.13GHz) model to upgrade?
@shayanaijaz Because you can do anything without noisy dvd drives.
Almost everything is digital these days, games etc. you can buy/download them from internet without the need of physical media.
This was a really good well thought out video. Thanks for the review!
how much did it cost
How fast is it?
nice clip! BUT: this clip is NOT available in my country (germany). i had to vpn-tunnel my way here. could you please check what music you did use that is "not allowed" over here? cheers!
1440 x 900? That's my current resolution for my 18.5 monitor >.<
great review :)
My sony comes on when the lid is shut and i reopen. It hardly justifies apple to call it instant on
@Nightvisionlol its not in the netbook range thats why its that price and because it is in the ultraportable range which is more expensive and more powerfull
well explained. Also I like the watch you are wearing. where can i get it? :)
I really do wish macs werent so expensive, i know they're very good quality, my mom has a fairly new imac, but still being in highschool and having to buy one yourself...its kinda tough. Eventually, i'm looking forward to either a 15" or 17" macbook pro to run crazy fps in WoW.
Dan rocks!!!!!
Not to mention that it is just about as powerful as the 13" MacBookPro at everyday tasks at the time of the video.
@Danny77uk

@arrow1archer This would be great and yes it is the new intro.
Why is the computer closed for 80% of the time?
@dfoggin
According to the tear-down of the 11" that ZD Net did the SSD is not locked down, but it is proprietary. It is connected with a (mSATA) mini-SATA port. If you have some documentation to the contrary please send it my way.

@JBocchinfuso I totally agree, this is how laptops should be made!
@XxHardcorexxGamerxX Pricing lower would be a good way to go for the spec.
@Danny77uk
2) Its a net-book (I don't care what others say, Its a netbook) and with that in mind the spec are solid

This should have 4 gigs of ram as standard... 2 gigs is inadequate for today's standards.

Does it have usb 3.0?
if the macbook air work with cd i would get it
A review of the 11 inch model would have been more interesting than this 13 inch model. And where is the real Dave?
@CYNFELYN23

@CYNFELYN23 i would recommend MacBook. Use iMovie for light video editing.
i skipped most of it to were he opened it..but i didnt see tht..did he make a 10min review without even lifting up the screen? 'o.O
@Nightvisionlol It's not a netbook.
@pochoun33137 I agree but the flash memory makes all types of I/O much faster.
I'll stick with my 13inch macbook pro. For the money I would want a faster processor. At least 2.5 ghz and 4 gigs of ram.
@sj408sanjo Great comment, thanks.
Sehr gut.
jst realized one thing.....it doesnt have a dvd rom??? y spend so much for a badass product which doesnt even have a cd-rom.
@theDRUMMERDUDE100 That is the G-Technology G-Safe.
@backstageblues Congratz! Very nice.
That's apple engineering for you... Though I still think it's a bit overpriced. Either improve the specs(CPU, ram, ports,etc) or decrease the price
Guess they did the latter
@RonanChromy100 I am here, behind the scenes today ;)
@Danny77uk
Yeah I have the EEE 1000H. I love the thing...for what it is.

@JBocchinfuso Well said.
How much it is ?
@evenchampions according to latest update from CNET macbook air has a possible refresh in JUNE 2011 thats gonna piss off a lot of people.
Ohhh I want this, too bad it's about $1,600 lol
@sennakurosaki I am here, behind the scenes ;)
@ozorg This is not due to music, it is an issue with GEMA. Check this video out, it might help th-cam.com/video/vEUEHZq0LqQ/w-d-xo.html
@pochoun33137 i completely agree. instant on is totally bullshit. for the cold boot though, someone needs to do a comparison between an ssd and the new air's flash drive directly on the board whatever crap.
@evenchampions Not until late 2011 I would imagine, at the earliest.
@JBocchinfuso
It doesn't have a SSD
This is old❤😊
🤓👍🏻
@htcjunkie16 Good point.
@CYNFELYN23 Not for video editing really.
@AndresRoddick1 Something like the online service Steam.
@jun23
No turbine cooler either.
@jun23 Nope :(
@chetopuffs Ah right, cool.
nice intro!!!!
@mitsubishigalant Cheers.
@richardpatrick32123 Thank you.
designed by apple in California :) i love America.
i hate your new intro music...
@0escape0the0fate0 I want a 22 or 24 1920 x 1080 LED :D
u talk too much... just open the computer already!!
@txprodigy95 and made in China.... You love China too? :P
