Hey Eddie, Master Plumber here on the North Shore of Boston. I also got the 4pk for $196.-all in. That's about $50 bucks per! In-sane! 😀 The seller, as of today Apr 29, has just one 4pk left. BTW, on the test lead set you provided an Amazon link, when I got to Amazon there were none and stock and they said they didn't know if or when it would be back. So I ordered the Bionso set (~$23.00) and they are comparable and a very nice set...silicone covered test leads, with multiple screw in probes, some gold plated. Cat II/IV rated with grabber set, spade lugs, and alligator clips attachments.

Ordered a set of 4. I bet they clean up nice with some Dawn power wash on a toothbrush. I like how it can detect ac ripple on a dc line. That’s pretty sweet.

Thanks for the great vid and the links. I watch the vid a few hours after you posted it and the seller was sold out. I didn't think I would get any as it was a discontinued item and all. But, I set a notification on the 4 pack and he had them back in about 4 days. I ordered as soon as I saw they were back. I just received mine today and they are charging now. I gave one to my brother and one to his son, so I have one now for the shop and I'll keep one in the house. I ordered some coin cells and replaced the when I opened them up. Thank you again for the excellent information and heads up. The seller was still selling them a few minutes ago, for others that are interested (5/3/24).

Eddie - I purchased one of the south wire meters on the cheap from eBay. Great meter. Mine had some discoloration and the case was a bit tacky right out of the box. I used a few drops of goo gone on a microfiber and that took care of the discoloration and tackiness. I then followed up with a bit of isopropyl on a microfiber to remove the goo gone residue.

Hi Eddie. Thanks for your video review.
As a couple other people mentioned, the numbers on the plastic is the manufacturing date. So the top dial is the year, which in this case is 2018 and the second dial represents the month which is September. Some manufacturers only have one dial pointing to the month, with the year printed in the middle of the dial, where the arrow is located.
Also, I believe the white residue on the meter could be mold release agent that was used during production of the plastic part. Some mold release agents use silicone or PTFE or a combination of both. It looks like dried PTFE but someone with more knowledge may be able to give a better explanation on what that residue is.

Hey Eddie, Thanks for the interesting background and exploration of these meters. Very informative! I managed to recently acquire one of the surplus Amazon Commercial versions and am pretty impressed overall. It's a fine meter. One feature that I haven't seen emphasized in reviews of the unit, is the ability to change the colors of the display. I tweaked mine to a green on black screen that really sings to my eyes. It's a surprisingly beneficial capability. And of course, those 50K counts. Thanks again for the content! - jrh

PVC can be blended with a number of other rubber compounds, to alter the mechanical properties, but blending options for leads might be limited due to changes in dielectric strength. Some PVC blends will be glossy like plastic but have poor recovery (It will dent under your fingernail and won't spring back), others have better recovery characteristics so they are more durable when flexed or compressed. PVC Nitrile is a common blend in industrial applications, used as an alternative to Hypalon.

It's working now, what I did was turn the selection knob 60 times ( lol) and it started working... Passing information just in case same problem happens with another viewer. I kind of figure it was between either software circuit board, which I check and was no burn so anything on it or it was mechanical dealing with the knob selection knob so I took a chance with the section knob and it started working the only thing you know resistance you know it looks like it’s out of calibration, you know it might have to be calibrated but everything is working now so until further notice, I will let you know if there’s a change thanks a lot later

There are a lot of pro's and con's with the type of Fluke meter you use on a daily basis. I can without ANY doubt testify that the Fluke 77, 177, 179, 87 II, 87 V and recommended silicone test leads is worth their weight in life and limb..... Had around 8 incidences in 10 years on 380V AC panels, where the operators tried to measure 380V busbar voltage with the meter and leads in the incorrect position. In none of the incidences were anyone hurt or sustained arc flash injuries. Yup, the meter is beyond repairs, the leads are disformed, and in all cases, the 10A fuse cleared the fault fast enough before any injuries. Our problem at work is that the 380V system fault level is around 40 - 50kA phase to phase.
There are a number of meters that are designed to be safe in these CAT ratings. The great thing is that they are 3rd party tested and come with the markings to show it. So, you don't have to 'believe' on the meter that you are using - they are pretested.
What kind of work are you doing where you need so many digits? For $80 clams I can get a meter that doubles as a portable oscilloscope and I find that handy.
Great question. It can be very important if you want accuracy in low voltage or current measurements. They have better ADCs with more bits to provide higher resolution.
You can get better readings over 6 V where 6k count meters lose a digit. Remember - the last digit, or maybe two digits - depending on the meter - have almost unusable accuracy. So, having all these digits helps you get at least one to two digits of accuracy that is very dependable.
Also, the wide bandwidth is the most useful thing for many of us - especially if you are working in audio.
They make good hand tools and I have yet to get and try one of their meters. A company who makes romex wire and cable. I love their products

Any suggestions on how to reduce the intensity of some of these devices' buzzers? I tried putting a dollop of hot glue over the hole there on top - thinking this would muffle the intensity/k make it quiter.....no dice.... any other thoughts? Soldering in some sort of resistor? Or?? I've actually removed my latest meter's buzzer since it was just too much... was soldered in so tightly against the pcb, not surface mout but throughhole....was a pain in the buttox to remove and thought i'd almost cracked the PCB doing so....would have preferred to have some sort of other fix that made the buzzer literally just noticeable ...as quiet as possible or enough for the user to hear if the hold it in their hands, something like over a foot away and you can't hear it...that'd be nice! Actually the ability to adjust the volume would be lovely.
Thanks! Which version did you get - the Amazon or Southwire? With the Southwire, go to menu and then scroll to the left once and you get settings. From there go to beeper and select - then you can choose to turn it off. ;) Great meter;)

Anyone else bought the battery in the link, the cs-cdt980sl...? It fits fine and the voltage is at 8 volts but the meter wont turn on. Any secrets to maybe to getting this bat to work. Thanks

Great question. I'll have to test that. But the great thing is there are not a bunch of batteries that you have to throw in the landfill when they are drained - you can recharge - yahoo;)
The Southwire seems to have a different firmware giving bolder digits than the Amazon. I wonder if the Southwire firmware can overwrite the Amazon firmware.

I have one ,, problem that I noticed it's reading double of everything ... I opened and checked the circuit board for burns , none.... I checked the 3 volt battery and it was dead... Example outlet is 120 volts , it is reading 233 volts... Your advice...

Thanks for asking! Can you return it for another? Loading the firmware might correct it. It sounds like a strange bug in the firmware. Have you checked the DC Voltage and Ohm readings?

Try removing the rechargeable battery for a few min then reinstall it.

I received my four pack and have listed the remaining three on eBay. All four packages looked the same so I just randomly picked on. My battery charged up fine and it works fine. I think the white chalky look on the rubber is what is known as "Rubber bloom"
Check out the Southwire 14090T. It is also a nice meter. Cat IV up to 600V. It is not rechargeable, but takes 4AAA batteries which is helpful so most use cases for this type of meter.
Southwire is a well-known brand to electricians.

I would buy this Southwire. I love the TX3 and have a few - as I was collecting them;) But, they are old - like the 87V, so the tech is old, and unlike the 87, they don't make them anymore, so it really depends on how good of shape it is in. Southwire is better polished at fonts and Ui, though both slow ... I have Amazon one, nice meter. After about 2 years is pretty spot on against a reference bench meter. Hycon 3131 is top DMM frontend.

I have this meter in its Amazon Commercial variant and I don't know how CEM can make these on behalf of the assorted ReBadgers and make a profit. It is sturdy as ANY Fluke, great function range and counts and comes with everything you need including sturdy case.
