I used to follow London Knights (same as the Canadian team) that were based in London but sadly folded many years ago. Hope your trip to Manchester goes equally well! Our Olympic hockey team just finished our qualifying round at the Cardiff rink.

I would say theres a big difference between the smaller clubs like Flyers and the big clubs like Sheffield Steelers and Belfast Giants for e.g. size of arenas, amount of merch etc. We're a bit of a backwards league because hockey just isnt big here in the UK unfortunately

As a Scottish ice hockey fan the atmosphere is fantastic! The strange thing is a lot of teams have a live broadcast with commentary you can watch online, but you need to pay for a subscription to watch. Why they cant get it on the tv i have no clue
Dundee fan here, great video. Fife have a more traditional barn than what we do as our old Kingsway ice rink was moved to Camperdown. Hockey is a niche sport here but we have very passionate and dedicated fans.
Great to see someone promoting the EIHL, glad you enjoyed your trip to Scotland. You were very lucky to see a Fife win with how they've been playing this season. Maybe you should come down to one of the English rinks next time!
When you’re next in the UK, you should come visit some clubs outside the EIHL. One in particular is the MK Lightning who used to play in the EIHL from 2017-2019. They average 2k fans which is more than some of the EIHL teams do. They play in the same league as the Leeds Knights (a team I see have been mentioned in the comments already) who were formed in 2019/20 season and who won the league and playoffs in their third year. They are looking to do the same this season too. In a the league below MK and Leeds, NIHL D1, you should check out both the Whitley Warriors (Whitley Bay Newcastle) and Streatham IHC (London based side). Streatham were founded in 1932 and play in the Southern regional conference, whilst Warriors were founded in 1956 and play in the Northern regional conference. Therefore with the date according to Elite Prospects, Streatham is the only team in the UK, however Fife has been a professional side longer whilst Streatham play in a semi-pro league.
Love the video, you have visited the two smallest rinks in the uk though, you should try and check out one of the arena teams before you leave to see the scale across the elite league
Pop along to Sheffield or Nottingham and compare the rinks to Fife and Manchester makes you realise how hard it is for those teams to compete as well as they do

@RobertGreeley Brilliant! 👍🏻 My wife and I went to Sheffield last weekend and saw the Sheffield steelers play Manchester storm on the Saturday, (Sheffield won 3-0) and on the Sunday, Sheffield steeldogs hosted the Bristol pitbulls (6-3 to Sheffield) At the Pitbulls home games, after the match, they have a couple of players staying back to sign jerseys etc, and have photos with the fans!😀👍🏻 I've often had some of the visiting team players sign my jerseys from when they played for Sheffield steelers in past seasons👍🏻
As someone who grew up within the sport in the UK, its great to see some light shining on our leagues. if your ever down south give cardiff, guilford, slough and gosport a look at. 4 very different rinks. 4 very different fan bases and historys.

It's at least 70 years since I first watched Fife Flyers, but saw them recently in Belfast. In the 1950s I remember Floyd Snyder and there was a family of local butchers who were prominent in those days. Anyone remember their name?

I've never been to a hockey game but seeing your footage of it up close makes it look far better than on tv - I can never see the puck. Would definitely like to go if you can get close to the action like this.
Not many hockey fans like watching it on TV for that reason….can’t see the puck. It’s like 1 trillion x easier to see it in real life. Plus, once the puck gets accidentally shot or redirected into the stands almost hitting someone, you learn to track it very quickly! Oh and if the puck goes into the stand, you can keep it.
@@stevecooksley That’s a great team! This Sunday just gone (18th Feb 2024) they just won the NIHL D1 South league for the 4th CONSECUTIVE time!! So they’ll be a fab side. The season is from September-March with playoffs being held March-April.
I’m a Nottingham Panthers fan, but I have always loved the Flyers. They have the warmest welcome, the best atmosphere, and the best tea in the Elite League. And their food is good, too. When you visit, make sure you go to Anstruther for the fish & chips.
Fife is not the oldest hockey club in the UK. Oxford University is, formed in 1885 as recognized by the International Ice Hockey Federation. Still a very cool video.

Thanks for giving Scottish hockey some attention, I'm a Edinburgh Capitals fan. Also Scotland has historic links with Ice Hockey, there's a Scottish field hockey sporty called Shinty that some believe had an early influence on ice hockey.

Hi Rob , we love our hockey here in the uk , but its not a big sport the main problem is that if we go back to the 80's there were a lot of small teams not big city teams. They can't sustain teams in Newcastle or london , london had 3 teams - streatham. Lea valley and richmond but they cant keep a big london team alive like wise newcastle who had in the north east area durham , whitley. Crowtree and cleveland and smaller teams struggle financially to remain and compete in the eihl which is a shame because we are only a 10 team league. I'am not scottish but loved iron bru has a child its scotlands national drink.😅

Nottingham Panthers fan here. The EIHL isn't as professional as other hockey leagues and its been a bit of a mess this season because of the Adam Johnson situation but yeah its improved in the 8 years I have been watching.

I think you chose the best two rinks. Manchester and Fife given that they have character and charm which probably remind you of watching minor league stuff back home. Yes we have arena teams like Sheffield, Nottingham, Belfast, Cardiff and Glasgow with good atmosphere. But an arena is an arena and some can be soulless .
Honestly, being from Newfoundland as soon as I saw the Fife rink I was like oh man this takes me right back to minor hockey around the bay and I loved it!
King Charles? Interesting fact some rinks in Newfoundland had portraits of Queen Elizabeth up, haven't been home long enough to see if they switched it over to King Charles!
@@RobertGreeley what’s real interesting is that it happened in the bar and not on the ice. I was also about 5 years old. My brother’s team were at a tournament there and with several teams, every available space becomes a locker room. Was eating a candy bar and a loose milk tooth just got stuck and came out. Back then there were racks loaded with curling stones at the side of the rink. Tried to lift one and damn near snapped myself in half. They used to stop the tournament so the curling club could still have their session in the middle of the day.
Eihl is a great hockey league and sells out arenas but isn’t broadcasted on TV, game has got so much room to grow in the UK, another great video rob!

I think you chose the best two rinks. Manchester and Fife given that they have character and charm which probably remind you of watching minor league stuff back home.
Yes we have arena teams like Sheffield, Nottingham, Belfast, Cardiff and Glasgow with good atmosphere. But an arena is an arena and some can be soulless .
Honestly, being from Newfoundland as soon as I saw the Fife rink I was like oh man this takes me right back to minor hockey around the bay and I loved it!

The sports actually Decent here with a god system and set up but barely anyone actually plays at grassroots level

@@RobertGreeley what’s real interesting is that it happened in the bar and not on the ice. I was also about 5 years old.
My brother’s team were at a tournament there and with several teams, every available space becomes a locker room. Was eating a candy bar and a loose milk tooth just got stuck and came out.
Back then there were racks loaded with curling stones at the side of the rink. Tried to lift one and damn near snapped myself in half. They used to stop the tournament so the curling club could still have their session in the middle of the day.
