    Such an underrated little sampler. You really make it shine by using the limitations.

    Cool.
    Something similar I have done for chords is to 1) sample a chord into a melodic slot, 2) copy it into one drum of a drum bank, and 3) repeat. I end up with a drum kit full of chords. You lose the ability to play them on a scale easily. Not that useful a lot of the time anyway -- a lot of music doesn't call a scale of the major triad. You pay sample memory for each chord sampled. I usually only need 3-5 anyway. There may be some other minor downsides, but, now all your chords use only 1 of the 4 possible simultaneous voices, and they automatically won't play over each other because they're all in the same drum bank. It also makes it easier to use more different kinds of chords. You have 8 melodic samples to fill, which is also enough for 3-5 chords, but then you have to change "sound" to change chords. Having a drum kit "pallet of chords" can make them nice to lay out in the sequencer. It's cool that on such a tiny, limited device you still have multiple ways of doing things with tradeoffs to consider.

      Yeah I've sampled like that quite a bit in the past as well, the only thing I don't like about doing it that way is it winds up eating up a lot of sampling time, depending on how long your chords are anyway haha. Thanks for watching!

      Could be handy to set up the same set and layout of chords you get on the PO-20, for sync wassumness. 🤔

    Amazing Tutorial! Very smart way of using the 4 voices.
    I saw another guy record his kicks and snares together with high hats and crashes to save up space and fill up the sound.

    PO-33 is such a powerful little thing. That jam on the video sounds awesome!
    The more videos I watch about PO-33 the more I want to get a new friend for my PO-128...

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The PO-128 would go really well with the 33 or 133, you should totally give the combination a shot. Thanks for watching!

    • @FreeBeat

      Haha nope, the PO-33 makes it easy!

  • @zooblestyx
    @zooblestyx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You can also sample a major 3rd in one slot and a minor 3rd in another. Chords will take up 2 of 4 polyphony, but you'll be able to put together a lot of delicious chords.

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that's a good strategy too, I just don't like using up half of the polyphony with chords haha.

  • @LillySchwartz
    @LillySchwartz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This was very helpful! Now I just have to figure out how to make something on my PO33 that doesn‘t sound like chip tune 😂 that‘s where I always gravitate with the PO33! Funny how that happens with certain devices.

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've definitely found that to be the case, certain devices just make certain genres to certain folks hahaha. Thanks for watching as always!

    @returnofthegoth2220 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow. Seems so obvious when you put it out there but I had not thought about how the chords would play out in the melodic slots. Thanks for the knowledge!

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! It winds up using two of your eight melodic slots, but it only winds up using one of your four notes of polyphony, which I think is a far more precious resource on the po-33.

    Another nice job! I don’t have the KO but sample into Koala and Blease Sampler, (both IOS) I haven’t gotten the 33 just because I have 4 PO’s already and I feel with those two sample apps, I’ve got it covered. Unless you can convince me otherwise! Lol

    I think this is me just being clueless about music theory, but what actually happens when you sample a chord into the melodic bank and then hit a number key other than 5? Does it become a new chord? Does it always sound good?

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  ปีที่แล้ว

      It will transpose the chord. Whether it sounds good or not is completely subjective :) Thanks for watching!

    Does the PO 33 want a Stereo or Mono input signal?

    • @FreeBeat

      It can take either, but it will output mono. Thanks for watching!

    dude i d love to see more op 1 stuff
    the video you already made with the op1 (that you have the studio with you and sequencers and synth ) was amazing
    i come from a full fletched hybrid studio daw and outboard gear api avalon and so on but here comes the thing
    i am going to buy an op1 and it is boosting creativity so much because you have limitations as simple as this i can polish later the sound in the daw but the random people who listen to my music will not recognise any differences at all i think
    when the beat is right i mean groovey it feels right (of course you have to use punchy and good already mixed samples ) but thats what i noticed so far and it is easy you turn it on and boom there it goes
    one question i have here to be answered if you have the time
    can i record an external signal (trough the line in jack) directly to tape or is there a limit of 12 seconds as i heard of ?
    thanks i am watching your stuff from time to time you seem like a very cool dude
    keep it up
    greets from germany

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much, I'll definitely have more op-one content coming soon! You can record anything, internal synth or external synth straight to the tape and use the full 6 minutes. The 12 seconds is just for sampling to the drum sampler to be sliced up into a drum kit. I did a video a week or two ago about using the op-1 as a multitrack recorder :)
