How to fix VAX Blade dead or intermittent brush head - head motor not turning and LED not on

  • In this video I demonstrate how I fixed our VAX Blade brush head. It started to cut out when the head was turned to the left or right and then stopped working all together.
    If you can hear the motor running and the LED is on but the brush bar isn’t turning then you probably need a new belt so you only need to watch up to removing the side covers, the belt is very easy to replace.
    There’s a short length of cable connecting the plug of the head to the motor circuit board and it fractures where the head flexes.
    I was unable to find a replacement part on the internet so decided to make my own from some mains lead.
    The VAX in question was four years old and I think the repair will last another few years, time will tell.
    Anyway I hope the video is of help and many thanks.

    Thanks for taking the time to make this well-explained video. You made me feel like a boss after completing all the steps and my vacuum cleaner came back to life! The brush used to stop-start constantly but it now works great. You saved me the headache of buying a new vacuum head. Once again thank you

    Thanks for the help in fixing my Vax floor head. In fact, I did such a good job as soon as I attach the head to the wand it starts working, even before I've turned on the base unit 😂! No idea why. But at least I can use it now 🙂

      I read in the comments someone else had the same issue but they had also changed the battery. Not sure whats going on there, the cause has to be in the main unit as the power to the head is controlled from there.

      @@DARTraderMediaProductions I've probably broken that as well 😥Never mind. As the other person said, a quick disconnect after using it is fine, at least it's working now. And it was the exact same wire in the exact same place as in your video, so obviously a design flaw.

    Very helpful video. Saved £40 to £50 or so! Both of my cables looked like they had been cleanly severed near the plug - but just enough cable to repair (this time).
    I must have had a later model. The top plate came off in two parts - centre cover and light then 2 more screws to release the rest.

    Thank you so much for uploading this helpful video. very informative. I have two of these hoovers, bought the same time about 2 years ago, but the heads are not working. partially Pulled them up today and found the same cables (the ones you mentioned here) broken close to the plug. would it be possible for you to help me with the gauge of the wire you used please. thank you very much for your time?

    • @DARTraderMediaProductions

      The cable I used was from a old figure of eight mains lead, the type you plug into a radio etc. It was slightly thicker than the original but that's for the better really and was multi-strand copper so flexible enough. Just strip the outer covering off to reveal the two inner cables, blue / brown and use suitable lengths to make up new leads. Hope this helps and many thanks.

    Great video. Shame I didn’t see this before I fixed mine. I removed w a a y too much of the head. AND, I started at the top and worked down. Fearing bad joints on the handle segments.
    Incidentally, my neutral was broken in exact the same spot as yours.
    Poor design by the look of it.

      To be honest I don't think I'd buy another as it's not been very reliable. The charger went first then the switch would stick and sometimes turn itself on, thought we had a ghost for a while. Then the head wiring and I've just ordered a flex pipe for the head as it's split. I've also noticed the main motor bearings whine sometimes when it's slowing down. Many thanks for your great comment.

    my vax hose is so short cant get end out enough to unscrew it. 2nd the terminal at end is not soldered in goes inside seems its glued in ,waiting for small drill bit to see if i can drill broken end out.. although thks for vid.

      Hopefully you will sort it. I am waiting for a replacement hose to arrive as mine has split. This vacuum cleaner has been a pain in the arse to be honest. I'll not buy another, they are just too unreliable for what they are. Many thanks for your comment and hope it works out for you.

    How do u unscrew the screw inside the brush bar.. the rotation brush hold has stop and I would like to change it.. ( I have a space part for this)

    • @DARTraderMediaProductions

      Not sure I understand, there is nothing to unscrew on the brush bar itself.

  • @jeremytaffel634

    I have a diffeent problem. The light comes on - so no issue with the cable. The brush is free to turn, but isn't powered. So it seems that the sensor which detects a jammed brush has failed- disabling the motor to prevent it burning out. Can you tell me how I test the sensor, and to disable it if it has failed ?

    • @DARTraderMediaProductions

      Possibly but I would start by checking if there is any power getting to the motor to rule the motor out. As far as the sensor goes from memory there is a 1cm square orange / light brown component on the small board that the motor is connected to. It's marked B220 according to my notes and the motor is fed through it. In normal operation it will have continuity through it if you put a test meter across its legs. I think it's a thermal cut out as when a jam occurs it gets hot and cuts the power. This is why the user guide tells you to wait one min after clearing the obstruction before switching on again as it needs time to cool. I can't see anything else on that small board that would act as a sensor / cut out device. This is only my understanding of it's working and could be completely wrong but this was the conclusion I came to when I was playing with it.

    I did the wire fix but now the brushbar works without the power button on!As soon as I attach the top power unit. Any ideas please?

    • @DARTraderMediaProductions

      That's strange, I have no idea whats going on there. I take it it was working normally before the wire(s) broke.

    • @user-no9xn8gp1q

      I did change the battery as the lights were flashing red so thought I had short circuited the power head. And new one charged up fine.

    • @DARTraderMediaProductions

      If the LED(s) on the brush head were red it usually indicates the brush bar is jammed or possibly the motor. Too much has gone on to say what the fault might be without it being in front of me.@@user-no9xn8gp1q

    • @user-no9xn8gp1q

      Thanks. It's a fix for now so we can cope with the hose quick unplug to stop it. But seems like it should just be a wire connection issue.

    • @DARTraderMediaProductions

      Could the switch be faulty ? or maybe as you say a connection issue somewhere.@@user-no9xn8gp1q

    • @DARTraderMediaProductions

      Yep, I would not buy another. First the switch went followed by the power supply and then the head, Oh and I've noticed a split in the flexible pipe on the head. The thing always seems to run out of battery when you've not quite finished. 🤣
