About St. Vitus "In Germany, his feast was celebrated with dancing before his statue. This dancing became popular and the name "Saint Vitus Dance" was given to the neurological disorder Sydenham's chorea. It also led to Vitus being considered the patron saint of dancers and of entertainers in general." About the Sydenham's Chorea Disorder "Sydenham's chorea, also known as chorea minor and historically and occasionally referred to as St Vitus' dance, is a disorder characterized by rapid, uncoordinated jerking movements primarily affecting the face, hands and feet. Sydenham's chorea is an autoimmune disease that results from childhood infection with Group A beta-haemolytic Streptococcus."
The dancing plague was definitely one of the weirdest in history. I always felt like it was probably a mix of hysteria, and possibly ergot poisoning or something.

In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy’s shoes were originally silver, but when making the film, everything in Oz needed to read bright and colorful after the sepia toned (black and white) Kansas scene. So they became red.

There is a reason we're told to talk to our babies while pregnant. Bailey has a distinctive voice and way of speaking. Your niece may recognize Bailey's voice.✌😸
She will be recognizing Bailey's voice. They hear everything going on around them in Utero. To fit in with today's History I will add a trivia feature; THE UNBORN LOVE TO DANCE! 🕺 💃 Just maybe not the hopping around part.
Even today professionals in the medical fields are trying to figure this "plague " out. Ergot may have had a hand in it, as if one consumes food with this mold on it, it produces hallucinogenic effects. (LSD.) Entertaining story. This time span of history regarding the Dance Macabre has always been intriguing , although sad.
Side note: in the original wizard of oz books the shoes were silver. The wizard of oz was the first movie made in color. The studio felt red would look better on screen. Thus the silver slippers became ruby slippers. Not aware of any link to the dancing plague but I wouldn’t put it past a Hollywood designer.

Some believe the dancing could have been brought on by food poisoning caused by the toxic and psychoactive chemical products of ergot fungi (ergotism), which grows commonly on grains (such as rye) used for baking bread. It would of contaminated the entire crop and using local grain to make more food for the dancing people would of perpetuated the problem!

For me it looks more like they had some kind of fungus going around that caused neurological damage that made their muscles contract, what made it look like they were dancing. Maybe the fungus was what attacked the crops and they were consuming that fungus with the food. What also explains why it happened all around the same area.
All I can think of, during this story, is "I've got the rockin' pneumonia and the boogie woogie flu" and David Bowie's Let's Dance " put on your red shoes and dance the blues"
My Father had St. Vitas Dance as a child. He had rheumatic fever. Saint Vitus' Dance is an alternative name for the movement disorder Sydenham's chorea (chorea minor). This condition presents as jerky, uncoordinated movements of the face, feet, and hands, and sometimes the limbs. It is usually associated with acute rheumatic fever, an inflammatory disease caused by childhood infection by group A streptococcal bacteria, such as in scarlet fever or strep throat. The disease may also be associated with pregnancy and hyperthyroidism.
This reminds me of an old Swedish tale called Hårgasägnen (the tale of Hårga). Hårga is a village, and the tale is that once upon a midsummer's night, the Devil came to Hårga disguised as a fiddler and when he played his violin, all of the youth in Hårga started dancing as if they were in a trance, and then they danced until they died. Then the devil was like "whoopsie" and left.
I’ve never heard that story, but I find it interesting because it reminds me a bit of the country western song, “the devil went down to Georgia” by the Charlie Daniels Band. If you haven’t heard it, look it up. The devil is also fiddle player in the song.
@@Brooke33333 Oh really? I actually haven't seen that movie yet because there's been so much talk about it and I don't want that to spoil it for me, but that's really cool that they put that in! About St. Vitus "In Germany, his feast was celebrated with dancing before his statue. This dancing became popular and the name "Saint Vitus Dance" was given to the neurological disorder Sydenham's chorea. It also led to Vitus being considered the patron saint of dancers and of entertainers in general."
About the Sydenham's Chorea Disorder "Sydenham's chorea, also known as chorea minor and historically and occasionally referred to as St Vitus' dance, is a disorder characterized by rapid, uncoordinated jerking movements primarily affecting the face, hands and feet. Sydenham's chorea is an autoimmune disease that results from childhood infection with Group A beta-haemolytic Streptococcus."

Buffy the vampire slayer had a musical episode where a demon made people dance until they burst into flames. I like this story. Nice choice!
That's what I always heard and couldn't believe it didn't get mentioned!

The netherlands just did a TV show where people could win 100.000 euro if they can dance for 50 hours. Now I know where they got this wild idea from
During the 1930s Depression, in the US, dance halls regularly had these dance offs, fictionalised in "They Shoot Horses Don't They?"
It's just because Winnie Sanderson said, "Dance, dance, dance until you DIE!" in Hocus Pocus.

Hocus Pocus
The scene where the kids find their parents at the party and Winifred Sanderson casts a spell on them all to "dance until they die"
For me it looks more like they had some kind of fungus going around that caused neurological damage that made their muscles contract, what made it look like they were dancing. Maybe the fungus was what attacked the crops and they were consuming that fungus with the food. What also explains why it happened all around the same area.
wasn't that called ergot? I think that was a popular theory. surprised it wasn't mentioned.
