This still happens today. In med school in most states, students are taught that black people's liver reacts differently and they have a higher tolerance, leading to more black people deaths in medicine. The US government needs to be held accountable as with the Nuremberg trials for the German Nazis (American Nazis were never held accountable). The idea of America is great, but we have a long way to go and a lot of work. I hope with more of this coming out people will realize how much more work needs to be put in.
This story reminds me a bit of how Latina women back in the 60s-70s were involuntarily sterilized in Los Angeles and had no idea of this until whistleblowers that worked at the hospitals shed light to it. I hardly ever hear anyone talk about it. I’m Mexican and even some within our community have no idea this happened not so long ago. It’d be cool if Bailey did a video about it.

I have a whole book [medical apartheid] on all the experiments done on people of color back in the day. Its nice that you're bringing this to life. In addition, my grandfather was a Tuskegee airman. This episode really hit home. Thanks Bailey!! 💜
This story reminds me of The “father of modern gynecology” James Marion Sims. This monster experimented on enslaved people without anesthesia. You can find many statues and hospitals in his honor.
It's absolutely horrific! I'm glad someone has mentioned this. POC women (Puerto Rican, Indigenous, and Black/African-Americans come to mind first) have been treated as experimental scientific bodies with no regard for their life or time quite a bit in American history.
Same. My grandmother is a doctor here and I had to ask her about this. She knew people personally. I love Alabama but our state definitely has DARK HISTORY 😕
Bailey, an episode about Henrietta Lacks would be really great. So many people have no idea who she was and how she unknowingly contributed to medicine and science by having her cancer cells stolen by doctors without her consent.
Thank you for saying the obvious out loud. I was brainwashed into thinking America was a pillar of morality as a child. I’ve been sensitive to injustices my whole life as an Asian person. It never goes away as long as some people want all the power.
Thanks I enjoy your videos. I like how you are very candid about our history. Seen a few videos and have learn a lot. I was appalled to hear about this, treating human beings worse than animals. Man dominating man in the most vile way. It’s disturbing that that’s the way of the world.
Look into the summer Wells case and if you do I can give you links to go into that are live cast where you can actually get real information and also not to mention the Discovery channel has already put this out and there's no national news on it and it's only 4 months old maybe 5 months and she is from Tennessee
As a lifelong, born and raised resident of Alabama, I truly appreciate you covering this story. I didn’t even know abt this experiment until I was grown and in college 20miles away from Tuskegee University. Thanks for using your platform to spread real truth.
Learned about this in 2011 in high school (11th grade) during our college health class. Our professor was black and she made sure we covered the Tuskegee experiments. I was horrified and saddened. I thank our professor for teaching us the reality and cruelty black people have endured. THiS IS IMPORTANT and should be taught in schools.
And to think I graduated in 2005 in an all white school district literally 4 black kids in school then more now and they still to this day are fighting this type of education smh
why is so much of history just “black people minding their business and then RACISM” 😞. Thank you for continuing to tell the stories of so many marginalized groups and the brutalities they’ve faced.
"What is your reason for living today?" The answer is clearly Bailey exposing the corruption within the government all while being a straight goddess about it.
I was waiting on this one. What baffles me is how these "doctors" didnt lose their licenses. They took oaths when they became medical doctors, but for the price of $37,500 they got away with it 🙄
This reminds me a lot of Henrietta Lacks. Bailey you should totally look into her case and how she’s the reason we have HeLa cells. “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” is such an interesting book, definitely worth the read. There’s some problems with the author of it but it gives great insight on Henrietta and what she contributed to science without her consent.
Her family was never paid a cent for her tissue and recently her family filed a lawsuit to get money. The government also wanted to have her family for a study but they refused. Thank Goodness.
I would love to see you cover the dark history of Australia and the widespread mistreatment and discrimination the indigenous people had gone through after the colonisers invaded. It’s swept under the rug to keep Australia’s squeaky clean image. A lot has improved since then but it’s a VERY dark history that isn’t taught in depth in Australian schools.
I would love to hear about this! I substitute taught for a history teacher and was reminded that British/Irish prisoners were sent to the country around the 1800s. As an adult I realized how effed up that was to the indigenous people
Yes. @Bailey Sarian, not sure if you’ve covered this yet, but this story definitely needs to be told!! (Especially since they’ve turned a prison with a *horrific* history into a _freakin spa retreat!!!_) Ty doll!!

As a Tuskegee alumni you made my heart happy. Whenever I tell people about this they look at me in disbelief. It’s crazy that the Tuskegee Syphilis Experience isn’t covered in many schools.
why would they want this and other stories told about what they've done to the AA community...they don't want the truth told about their evil deeds. smh
The government has done so many things to the black community over the years since slavery. Some examples being the prevention of economic growth, education and the systematic breakdown of the family. This was extremely disgusting & despicable.
Look into what they did to women in Puerto Rico for the birth control pill, its sick. What about what the Germans did to the jews putting them through torture like blood transfusions.

As a public health professional, I learned about this case in college. It really should be more public so more folks know about the racism in healthcare. The Tuskegee Syphillis Experiment till this day remains in public health history as one of the first systematic AND deliberate acts of racism. Bailey, if you think this is ridiculous you should look into Henrietta Lacks’ HeLa cells. It’s equally infuriating!!
Honestly, I think the Tuskegee Experiment was WAY more sociopathic than the Henrietta Lacks incident. Ms. Lacks received diagnosis and treatment for her disease. It’s just that the lab used her cells for experiments after performing her biopsy. The lab provided those cells free to all researchers at that time. It was later on that commercial entities got the free cells then established their own cell lines that they sold for profit. Ms. Lacks was deceased by the time anyone profited from her cells. The gentlemen in the Tuskegee experiment were not told their diagnosis and not treated. Many of them died of the disease. Many had permanent disability if they survived. They passed the disease on to wives and children and many of them died or were disabled for life. This is in contrast to Ms Lacks who got the best care available at the time. In her case, the ethical dilemma is whether her surviving family is entitled to proceeds from sales of the cell line derived from her original cancer. These days, there are consent forms and when we agree that our tissue may be used in research, we sign off ownership of that tissue to the researchers.

Well his syphilis had advanced so much that it actually ate away his brain and he acted like he had alzhiemer's cause he no longer had his fully functioning brain. It was extremely sad to see AMYONE treated this way. And they really knew what was wrong with these people... AND STILL DID NOTHING to help cure them. I'm so glad that Bailey covered this!

@@valeriejojola3609 Idk I think there's a pretty big difference between a lack of informed consent and lack of treatment in the Tuskegee experiments and the government going out of its way to recommend a vaccine to prevent illness. The American dream is just that… It’s not real. "The reason they call it the American Dream is because you have to be asleep to believe it." ~ George Carlin
My grandpa was apart of this experiment in Alabama but he tells this story differently,he says that he remembers they were giving out vaccines and he took this vaccine, him and others and that’s how they contacted syphilis. Of course I wasn’t there so I can’t be the judge but I would love if you could research that part a little more because this is the reason why a lot of older African Americans don’t like vaccines.
Yes, they were told it was a v@ccine and they required their 'vitamins' at follow up appointments but they were placebos and basically just being watched as they died. They fooled the people just like with this jab.
I think that if they had proof that the gentlemen in the Tuskegee Experiment were injected with syphilis, it would have been publicized. But there’s no proof and the sociopaths who thought up and performed this experiment are long dead. How did your grandfather know that that was what happened to him? Did he get a horrible sore (chancre) at the injection site?

Crazy fact… my great uncle was part of this and my grandmother took care of him after this blew up. It was so sad. He was tortured for years so it really messed him up mentally. When my grandmother explained to me this story years later, I was blown away.
When my mother died 13yrs ago she went in to the hospital for severe abdominal pain. She had been experiencing this pain for possibly a couple of years however she refused to see anyone about it because she did not trust doctors. When she finally went to the hospital they told her that she had a hernia but when the opened her op to fix the problem they discovered three different forms of cancer in her body. To this day I really don't know what actually killed her. She refused further treatment when she woke up from the surgery and asked to be taken home to live out her last month (yes that's right she died a month later) at home. This distrust of medical professionals still runs deep in a lot of black families and I can easily understand why. My own husband refuses to get regular checkups for this reason. It's awful and I can't even fault them for it.
I am so glad you did this one. I did a paper on it for an ethics class in college and it's ridiculous how the people involved never really felt like they did any wrong.
Thank you, Bailey, and the entire Dark History crew, for bringing awareness to these dark stories in our history. These stories need to be told! All my love to the victims and their families that suffered for so long. 🖤✨
Last year while interning and getting my master's I read an article on barriers to medical care in the African American and underserved communities for a course. I was at Grady hospital which is a community hospital here, for my internship, the story was about a woman who didn't seek care for a lump in her breast for years and it was breast cancer that resulted in an auto mastectomy. The Tuskegee study was mentioned as why some people don't seek care for illness, in addition to the financial dynamic. The Tuskegee experiment has left lasting distrust of medical community til this day.

I am over 50 and I learned about this in GRADE school!! This makes me wonder why it took so long for you to learn about this heinous act.

I'm so sorry.

Bc it’s still happening. My friend is a RN and goes to her own hospital for treatment and they’re still dismissive and ignore us
@@colourm3fab yep I know 😩 I am an African American woman myself, I most recently had an incident with a PA who I had seen for an annual exam. I came back for another issue, after getting the ultrasound she recommended etc. She wasn't attentive to there persistent issue I'm having, even after my exam showed I had a polyp. Sadly, she was also an African American woman so I was hopefully she would be a better listener. I find that the medical field in general tends to disregard or downplay women's issues sadly.
We could be hit by two trains and a bus and they'd still give us Tylenol because for some strange reason they believe our pain tolerance is higher.
yup black women are dying during childbirth at the most alarming rate. unless our doctors are black or poc half the time we aren't receiving proper treatment for our ailments.
@@mugiwara_k9283So sad and true, I did a research paper and the maternal death rate for black women and native women specifically is 3 times higher.
Dark history makes me look forward to Thursday’s ! 😭❤️
Thank you for speaking about this! I learned about this in college and was mad that I didnt learn about this. Also thank you for shining light on Tuskegee college! Our HBCUs dont get talked about
I already listened to this episode on the podcast, but I love Bailey so much that I want to watch it too! ☺️❤️
I've been waiting for this, the medical industry is not exactly always there to help. Such a disgusting truth. It is a business, and most old time businesses are deep rooted in racism and disdain for human life.

I was hoping someone would cover this! I’m from Alabama & never learned of this until my third year of college. Thank you for this story.
Thank you Bailey❤… and the study of gynological studies of a Black woman & Cancer research
I love the hair and love the progress dark history is going. Bailey definitely getting more comfortable doing this
