Oppression of Women
There’s little doubt, outside circles filled with self-delusional reactionaries, that religion is probably the most important force in continuing the oppression of women worldwide. Around the world, various abuses from coerced marriage to domestic violence to restricting reproductive rights are all excused under the banner of religion. More to the point, women’s rights have advanced more quickly in societies that put religion on the backburner, or like the United States, have strict laws separating church and state.
Tribalism
Religion divides insiders from outsiders. Rather than assuming good intentions, adherents often are taught to treat outsiders with suspicion. “Be ye not unequally yoked with unbelievers,” says the Bible. At best, teachings like these discourage or even forbid the kinds of friendship and intermarriage that help clans and tribes become part of a larger whole. At worst, outsiders are seen as enemies of God and goodness, potential agents of Satan, lacking in morality and not to be trusted. Obviously this segregation cannot be good for the world.
Extremism
All you have to do these days to see how religious extremism is tearing the world apart is turn on the television. Horrendous acts of violence are carried out every day in the name of religion. However, extremism is even more prevalent then what you see on the news. Even in the US there are swarms of religious groups that pervert religious scripture to suit their own anti-social beliefs. The Westboro Baptist Church, who picket outside the funerals of dead soldiers, is perfect example of this extremism. How can a group that preach hate towards others ever be classed as religious?
Personal Gain
Religion is used for the personal gain of the few at the expense of the many. All you have to do is look at the opulent settings of the Vatican to see that this is true. Churches are constantly asking for donations yet some of the wealthiest people in the U.S are preachers. Such is the case that, on the latest count, there are 43 preachers in the U.S with private jets. The exploitation of the vulnerable for financial gain is nothing new, but to do it in the name of God seems sick and perverted beyond measure.
Lack of Responsibility
If every aspect of our existence is a part of God’s plan; if everything that has ever happened or will ever happen is God’s will, then the need for us to be responsible to and for ourselves is negated. Even the most heinous crimes against humanity-against ourselves, from the murder of a single child to the Holocaust-can be ascribed to God’s will. But what does that mean for us? In the most practical terms, it means that we are not responsible for our actions. That if a parent abandons a child or a rich man becomes richer off the backs of the poor, it was all a part of God’s plan.

My parents are both Christian but with different sector. They both fought a lot and my mom would have to secretly go to her own church because my dad was very controlling. It really does affect the children and the overall household. I myself is not religious, I am agnostic and will stay that way. Religion brings so much problems and divides people.
If all Christians renounce their religion, other religious people also follow suit, and get rid of this dirty religious doctrines.

It's insane to think every Christian is going to wake up tomorrow morning and say " You know what, I'm gonna stop lying to myself and extinguish my religious beliefs. They don't know they're lying to themselves. It's not most of the current Christians that will change the religious populations, it's the younger people that are exposed to alternative ideas that are going to change the populations. It's already happening, while atheists and agnostics still make up a small percentage of the world, at least in America the religious are steadily declining, with spirituality becoming more popular especially in the younger populations, with most of the religious being in the older people. Spirituality is not as ridiculous as religion.

Greed, selfishness and religion, therefore human
This is a very common misconception to everyone. Religion is not the main reason of the negative issues that world is facing today. There are other factors like worldly possessions, desires, and greed for power. Even if religions will cease to exist, there will always be conflicts and issues. It is because of humanity. Humans misunderstood each other and their lack to love others. Humans takes advantage of religion for their own desires and power without realizing of what they have done. The religions today are being misinterpreted and misused by the society.

All those reasons are part of the human condition that can fall under any ideology. I mean all of these fall under democracy, communism, etc. If religion makes a family happy like a and doesn't effect anybody then why should it matter if they believe it?
Marco I agree. I think private worship is totally cool and can be beneficial. But organized religion can become a problem. It tends to separate instead of unite. But I think you're totally on point with the human condition thing. Even if the mask of religion goes away, there will still be violent, cruel, and judgemental people.
Because reality matters, we as a species are not to indulge others in their delusions. Time is of the essence, and we can't afford to raise generations of faithful people..but instead ones who seek evidence.

Religion i will always see as a slightly more sophisticated form of racism towards one another. Tried to teach me as a little boy, funny i was smarter then the adults around me. Religion is tragic I can almost cry for the world so much anger and hate. For what? Pent up self loafing ? Projection of your own insecurities to women and children? I try to speak to the religious from a calm and honest place all they will ever show back is hate. Cowards who lack self reflection and understanding all I can do is feel bad.

This is not really true, or at least not for religion. Extremism, yes, but religion as a whole is not that one sided. A good scientific argument, I respect, a bad atheist video, I don’t.

Anass Airsofteur Morals aren't religious-based. Common sense can get you most of the morals in the world. Science has existed before Christianity and Islam, science was used a lot by the Greeks and Romans, who did not incorporate their science and religion that much. The culture brought by religion is not all that good and world could do much better without it.

CJ Dippa, This is true. Religion is terrible, harmful and absurd, however it is a symptom of the flawed human mind. Yes, without religion the world would be a better, less violent place and humanity would advance at a faster rate. There would still be conflict and violent wars here and there because of the flawed human mind in the form of confirmation bias, backfire effect and tribalism.

Emperor Faust as I agree with this, the only time religion served purpose was to make people way back when there were still serfs during the height of feudalism, was to have a reason to live, it was taught that when they die after a terrible life they could live in bliss, but this now no longer serves a purpose.
