Ummmm, if a privately owned school only wants to admit students of that religion, then why would someone of another religion or no religion care? You just don't go and go to a public school. Simple.
    Bam!

They mentioned that a third of State-funded schools were faith schools. The problem is when the State shows relegious prefrences. If the school is private there are no ristrictions on that.

Because Evil can never rest until everything is consumed by it.
''We just wanna be left alone!'' Look what that got us.
Stop it with the smugness and lets take this seriously ffs.

I completely agree. However, i mostly agree with the german system. Basically, in public schools, you can choose between Catholic religion, protestant religion and Ethics. If you are atheist then take the ethics lesson. There also are muslim/jewish schools where muslim/jewish religion ist taught.

"faith schools have exemptions from equality law, which means they can discriminate against prospective pupils whose families don't share the religion of the school. In these cases schools will usually demand evidence of baptism or religious practice from a minister of religion.
When oversubscribed, new free schools in England with a religious designation can select up to 50% of their pupils based on their religiosity. Voluntary aided schools, including those which have become academies, can select 100% of pupils in this way.
Similar issues exist with schools in Scotland and Wales too. Catholic denominational schools in Scotland can require a baptism certificate for prospective pupils, while voluntary aided and foundation faith schools in Wales can apply faith-based admissions criteria when oversubscribed.
Discriminatory admissions arrangements disadvantage local children whose parents are non-religious or of a different religion to the school's religious designation. Many parents find that because of their lack of religious belief, they are unable to send their children to their local state school, which is often the most appropriate school for their needs.
Religious selection in schools is discriminatory, entrenches religious segregation in wider society, and often leads to ethnic and socio-economic segregation too. The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) has called for an end to religious selection at schools in England." - www.secularism.org.uk/admissions

@melin34999 Nobody said anything about religious selection. If a private school teaches religion there is no problem. If the nearest school teaches has religion as a subject and you really have such a big problem with it then find another school, you turned it into a problem. Of course these schools shouldn’t be allowed to discriminate against students, but if you’re an atheist and you choose to go to a religious school you should take part in the lesson. You can’t just tell me that religious schools should be forbidden because atheists might be living nearby, that’s just stupid. In Germany most schools have different courses, you can either take ethics/philosophy class or religion. That means that german public schools teach religion without discriminating against anyone. (Sorry for bad English)

I just went to the NSS website where there's also a written version of 'Secularism explained'. Can someone please correct the typo on the 'what-is-secularism' page i.e. change to "Freedom to *_practise"_* - using a 'UK english' spellchecker should be standard 🙂

I am muslim and i support secularism. I dont need shariah laws. Why i dont need that? Shariah laws can only applied to perfect muslim society. With so many muslim just practical muslim without fear to God, it is impossible to apply a total shariah laws. I dont need fatwa to rule over a generation that is seeking its identity.

Freedom from religion for the children, freedom of religion for the adults To me, secularism or somthing akin to it, can only happen when a country does two things concurrently - 1. make it illegal for children at attend religious establishments and practice religion (up to age of 16) 2. A compulsory education emcompassing philosophy as well as covering all religions and ideologies in an objective intellectual manner. The first rule allows space for minds to develop and grow independent of religion. As almost all religious people are born into it, it seems logical that establishing a buffer between the person and the religion would alter the landscape considerably. Even if driving the religions underground, it would become less attractive to those migrating with strong religious tendancies. In Tureky Atatturk did it with adults, and that was a mitake I think. The second point is essential for the frst one to have any meaning. Create the space, offer a breadth of information, and allow humans to choose. There woud be great pushback. The religious, especially those with expansionist ideas, know that indoctrination of the young is their bread and butter. To me, it is nothing short of child abuse.

Oh they fucking know what they are doing. People have free will and CHOSE to be evil even when they understand what they doing. These people are not stupid, they are liars that lie to your face and sometimes even admit they hate Christianity.
The unforgiveable Sin is the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit which can only be done by using your free will to look God in the eyes and still deny him and focus on your self. By putting yourself above God.
