Garage Door Opener Hack

  • In case you didn't read the comments, this project ended up failing because garage door motors are not designed to run for any length of time, AND they're not very powerful.
It runs fine when empty, but when I added a load of meat to the mixer, the run capacitor got super hot and EXPLODED! Unfortunately, some of the oily substance from inside the capacitor got into the meat and ruined the batch. I'll be back with version 2 as soon as I find a suitable replacement motor.
UPDATE: Version Two has been completed and is awaiting load testing. Check out the preliminary video here: • DEER SAUSAGE - MOTORI...

As a garage door guy, I love it. You could tighten the chain and it'd be a lil quieter.

Thanks! Don't know if you read any of the comments, but this ended up being a total fail. I discovered that garage door motors are only designed to run for a few seconds at a time. When I put this under load, the motor got way too hot and the capacitor exploded!
Check out my second attempt here: th-cam.com/video/XRkbQVM_5ps/w-d-xo.html
I haven't put that under load yet either 🙂

Ahh yeah. 8-10 time of pushing the button will cause the Override to kick in until it cools. That treadmill motor seems to be the way

This is a beautiful thing. Thanks for posting. And the air cooling addition is excellent.

Vern Smith Thanks. Unfortunately, when I put 4# ground meat in the mixer, the startup capacitor blew up after about 2 minutes. Literally splattered a small amount of hot black liquid all over the place. So apparently this unit couldn't handle the load. I've made a new sprocket, twice the diameter, but haven't had a chance to try it yet. Will report back.

My guess with the added weight and friction of the meat it'll still overheat quickly.

Try running a regular sized electric motor through a truck torque converter to gear down the speed. Run it by itself before producing the sprockets to calculate the appropriate speed. Then attach appropriate sprockets and you’re ready to go with plenty of torque. Document via youtube video = win!

Thanks! Dunno if you saw the discussion below, but the start capacitor blew up after about 2 minutes when I tried to actually mix some meat. I got a replacement cap and redesigned the driven sprocket to have double the teeth, which will reduce the speed of the mixer and the force needed to turn it by half. I had some issues with the 3D printer, so my first redesigned sprocket has been unusable. Will reprint sprocket with ABS in a few weeks and report back.

      haha awesome.
No-one ever turns their garage door opener into a meat grinder perfectly on the first time dude.
I remember my first time. I had shit blowing up everywhere....
I hope you can sense the sarcasm in this reply.

Unfortunately, once I put meat in here it was too much of a load for the garage door opener motor to handle.

Update: I bought a better start capacitor that was more expensive but closer in quality to the OEM one. And I doubled the diameter of the driven sprocket to cut the torque needed in half. The motor and the capacitor are still getting very hot, even with the air cooling system running full blast AND no meat in the mixer (zero load).
Alas, I have decided the garage door opener will not work for this project. I'm bummed because the built in slow speed and ease of reversing direction made this motor the perfect fit for this project...in theory.
I just salvaged some parts from a treadmill with a large variable speed DC motor. I have decided to try that motor. Stay tuned for updates!

Put a cover over that chain. Wouldn’t want your wobbly bits or a shirt caught.

Thanks for your concern but I'm usually wearing pants when I run this thing.
UPDATE: I have recently acquired several high-powered, variable speed DC treadmill motors. One has already been designated for my drill press, but another will be used for this meat mixer setup. Maybe I can finally get this thing up and running for good!

    Get a big cheap drill

    • @bullfrogpondshop3179
      @bullfrogpondshop3179  5 ปีที่แล้ว

I tried that way back. I found that variable speed drills do not maintain a consistent speed, even the ones with the little speed control dial on the trigger. The slower I tried to go, or the longer the drill ran, the more the speed varied. Not usable for this purpose.
