    Great idea! How do you protect the door opener from wet & freezing weather?

    Very very cool. What I would recommend for an opener, is the genie screw drive. Much smoother, lot less jerking and lot less stress on everything.

    I did something just like this about 4 years ago. My only issue was it would break the cable connected to the chain after a while. The reason being, I think the pole I used was too long (almost 9') and the gate would open slowly at first and speed up towards the end. The real problem was when I closed it, it was the opposite movement speed. It would start out almost slinging the gate and then slowing towards the final closed position. I was considering a shorter pole and found your video. The only thing I did different is I put a plastic garbage can over the opener. I had to do some cutting so it would fit over the opener but it keeps it safe from the elements (South Fl downpours). Thank you for my confirming what I had in mind. Great video.

    I finished it yesterday. Wow, what a difference. This design is much better than what I had. Smooth all the way, opening and closing. The only thing people need to know is that the pipe length takes some trial and error. Great video! BTW, I just added the link to this video of yours to mine since I got this from you. I don't TH-cam for subscribers. I just like passing on ideas so I wanted to give credit where it's owed.

    Is the motor protected for the weather? Is it all weather proof?

    • @WillieStubbs
      @WillieStubbs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mounted my opener on a railroad tie and screwed it into the lid of an Igloo ice chest, then I cut a hole in the chest for the chain to go through and was able to keep out the weather that way. I had to trick the safety sensors by mounting them facing each other and duct taped them together and put them in the box. Chain drive is definitely better than screw drive.

    If I was to attatch pickets to that gate would that add to much weight? How has the unit been holding up in the elements?

    • @PrimitiveGuyStuff
      @PrimitiveGuyStuff  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't think adding pickets would be too much weight, since the gate is being supported by the wheel attached at the end of the gate. I'd be happy to do a test by adding weight to my gate to see how it handles the additional load.
      I've since completed the upgrade to my 16' gate and they have been working seamlessly all year. I'll take a quick video of it as well as the extra load shortly.

    On that particular opener, there are buttons on the back that you can use to open the opener, defeating the security purpose

    • @PrimitiveGuyStuff
      @PrimitiveGuyStuff  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I am not really concerned with security. I installed them more for the practical use of automatically opening and closing the gate. I currently have clear plastic bins mounted around the opener motor to keep them dry, but I am building water proof wood containers that I will install some sort of hasp and lock.

    Just thinking here do you think it is possible to easily reverse the chain/cable in the track so when the gate is closed the arm is furthest from the gate hinge side mainly for additional leverage and strength holding it shut for wind gusts ect.

      I copied this just recently and have one nearly identical at my place.. and yea, the open/close position is reversed. :( Important to me since I'm using MyQ and it reports open when its closed and vice versa. Only way is to mount the opener/track off the game and have the non-moving arm mounted to the gate. I started this way but the geometry was wrong and I switched it like Tracy has it here and it works. Video of mine on my youtube if you want to see. I'm going to add security cams and lighting next.

      @@PrimitiveGuyStuff unfortunately I can’t install it outside…

    • @PrimitiveGuyStuff
      @PrimitiveGuyStuff  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@dmc2332 I did come up with a method to have it swing outward, but it would require setting up a pully system on the outside that is tied to the linkage on the inside of the gate. Basically, there would be two pullies at the opposite end of the opener unit that would have cable or wire rope attached to the portion of the opener that moves along the rail. That wire rope would extend along the outside towards the hinged part of the gate that will wrap around another pully. The opener extension arm would attach to the cable on the outside, so as the gate is being opened, the wire rope on the outside is moving in unison with the chain on the inside. I'll draw up a mock-up so you can see exactly what I'm talking about.

    • @PrimitiveGuyStuff
      @PrimitiveGuyStuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      I first considered a sliding gate opener, but they required additional hardware and supports for the gate, which add costs to the overall project. I waterproofed the garage door opener by removing the cover and spray coating the entire circuit board with PlastiDip, as well as encased the opener with a rubber cover. It's been running smoothly with no issues for going on 4 1/2 years.

    your top hinge should face down so you cant remove the gate

    • @PrimitiveGuyStuff
      @PrimitiveGuyStuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point. I should also place a lock on the manual release latch, as that allows the gate to swing freely.
      For us, being where we are located in the country, we didn't necessarily have security as the main reason for the gate, more so of a boundary to keep neighboring dogs from coming onto our property and dropping their load. Our yard was getting carpet bombed and we always had to watch where we stepped. The gate, along with the fence has been a great expense worth spending for.
