He was the "mediator" and All bands need one, just as all bands need a "leader".. It's clear that when Robbin's addiction began to take hold and he "took a step back" from the songwriting and mediating the (never-ending) drama that has always been a part of this outfit took hold the band fell like "a stack of cards!"….Every band needs that one guy to smooth out the edges and keep it all together, lest the band falls apart!. Robin was also a "key songwriter" who got demoted due to both his troubles and Warren being a "flashier player", which is all fine and good, but songwriting has NOTHING to do with Technicality and often the biggest hits are the simplest of songs and in no way am I stating Robbin wasn't a good guitarist, just the less involved he became in the songwriting, the worse the albums did commercially and the more RATT began relying on outside songwriters and lost a bit of that "magic" they had on their earlier releases, where Robbin contributed more to the songwriting!

I remember I was at a summer concert in Dallas in June 2002 with Dio, Scorps, and Deep Purple, and Ronnie James announced Robbin’s passing. It was maybe a couple of days after he passed when news still traveled a little bit slower. I just couldn’t believe it. Took me back to 84 when out of the cellar was released. I was 18, first job, first nice car, and that album cranked up to 10. Those were great times. Thanks for telling us more about Robbin. What a good guy. Drafted by the Dodgers…Wow

I can’t tell from the credits who wrote or played it but the lead guitar part on Lay It Down has really stood the test of time for me. I’d put it easily in my top ten favorite solos ever. It’s cleverly melodic, has awesome tone and fits perfectly in timing and melody of the backing chords. It’s an amazing example of what a person can do on an electric guitar and after all these years it still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.

    • @80s_kid
      @80s_kid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The Lay it Down was Warren DeMartini. It’s a fantastic solo and the opening riff itself is one of the most catchy hard rock guitar riffs of the ’80s. As an author, the entire band is listed, so I don’t know for sure who wrote the riff or where the basic idea came from - possibly from Warren because his name is the first in the author line -, but the solo was written and played by Warren.

It makes even more sense that Ratt didn't suffer sophomore slump with their equally phenomenal second album hearing how key Robbin was all around. That's extra special also that Robbin tried out for the Dodgers at the Dodgers practice camp in Vero. And that he passed on his residuals to his nieces and nephews so they could have an even better life. What a great, great human being. One more thing: letting Warren handle the guitars willingly when Robbin knew he had to do the right thing for the band regarding his further participation. One of the most stellar players ever: Warren DeMartini.

He probably didn’t write every note in the song, but the main guitar riff on Lay It Down was conceived by Warren. Producer Beau Hill tells a story of Warren visiting him when they were on tour to play him a rough demo of the song he had been working on. And yeah, the solo is Warren too.

I saw Ratt I think was the end of their first World Tour a few days after New Years in Honolulu and they were monster! Robbin's acoustic opening of Back For More was till this day unforgettable! Just a shimmering chorus effect I never heard before moving the air around the arena. Warren's solo was stratospheric...just watch out for this guy, every note was an Alien symphony not from this earth at UFO speed zig- zagging defying G-forces! All together they were just stunning and tight!
Now the sad thing about Robbin's later predictability is documented on A&E about his downward spiral drug dependence where he would be playing the wrong song many times and the Band has to tolerate his actions before a live audience and as this escalated his spending was taking him to the gutter...he would constantly ask somebody (can't remember the name) but since it's documented it's retrievable from a studio engineer often needing money for a $500 dollar fix three or four times a day. He would justify it saying 'come on you know I'm good for it.' What an end to a brilliant and gifted musician and future baseball in waiting sport star! A short clip of they're young up and coming force is on a video 'live' at the Rock Palace before all the fireworks and pyro stage effects were in use for every band in the future. It's a nice 4x song and the sound is great considering it was vhs!

King would call him all the time to talk. I can never forget how Frank used to talk about how he loved Robin. He used to tell me great stories about the many days/night they spent on the road and how he was the real deal yet he was a sensitive / kind person - not your typical rock star. He really was great person all around and deeply missed. Plus I ALWAYS loved it when he solo'd and wanted more. Honestly I just got tired of Warren...

Confirms how Robbin played a huge role in shaping Ratt's signature sounds which for me really stood out.
As much as all of the great melodies, rhythms, hooks, solos and vocals. The lyrics were often written from a second person narrative which is very different from the usual approach..
Its very noticeable, for instance,"maybe you were there and this is what you may have seen and done as well,or did",making the listener more a part of the story in the lyrics..
Anyway great tribute to Robbin and the band in the interview here!

Def Leppard's drummer LOST AN ARM and he's still playing drums in the band...let that sink in. The band was a bunch of self centered guys all on the take, money was all it was about. Once Crosby was gone, it was all over. To think they didn't even call him for any of the reunion stuff...they just built a case against him and then used that to justify all they did to him.

I don't think people really appreciate just how rare it is to get attention from professional baseball scouts , much less get drafted. That is a skill set that damn few people have . You can sometimes take a great athlete , if he's big , strong or fast , and make them into a football player , but baseball is skill set you have to start learning from the time youre a little kid and sharpen through repetition. If you want to make a great athlete look ordinary, put him in the batter's box against a professional pitcher, or stand him at any position and let pros hit line drives at him. I was a good baseball player in highschool and then played American Legion ball , sometimes against future professionals . I thought I was a ballplayer until I saw my first 80 plus mph slider coming toward my face and then breaking into the strike zone. I have massive respect for anyone who can play baseball at a high level

@@garrettgrant6049 🤘 Hell yeah, my friend! I've seen em about 6 or 7 times (lost count currently lol.) starting way back with the Clash of the Titans tour when I was in H.S., up to my last time a few years ago (the 1 time with Holt) as they only did the Seasons and older 80s catalog (amazing!), with the Seasons tribute tour (with Dave) before that (also REALLY killer as I got to see Lombardo AND Bostaph the same night on stage as Bostaph was doing Testament). And YES, being a now retired hard rock/thrash/death metal drummer (back problems forced early retirement 6 years ago), LOMBARDO WAS and WILL ALWAYS BE "THE GODFATHER" as he IS/WAS MY biggest inspiration for metal drumming! 🥁 I DO love what Paul did on DIVINE INTERVENTION (despite lotta others opinions) and that record too, and as for me? That is the last solid SLAYER album. I also like quite a bit of World Painted Blood and a hair bit of Christ Illusion but their other latter stuff? Not really, at all😒. Anyways, horns up and out brother! 🤘🔥😡🥁🎸🤘R.I.P Hanneman

@@jamescon55 Divine was their last GREAT album, after that each LP had maybe 3 great songs tops. Lombardo is the king, I'm a drummer too & for double kick drummers he's the king, ERIC CARR was another influence (Watch his Drum solo on KISS Animalize Detroit'84 show or go listen to "CARR JAM'81" then comeback lol unless you already know of his greatness). I saw every tour from Clash of Titans'91 till the final tour. My fav Slayer LP is Show No Mercy and the Era I would have loved to see live would have been the SHOW/HAUNTING/HELL AWAITS (1983-1985) era. Fuck can you imagine seeing the back then in a big NightClub/Bar/Theater, awesome 👍 what's yer fav Slayer LP n era

@@garrettgrant6049 You and I share pretty darn near the SAME tastes in SLAYER music, and the era of when I wish I could of seen em in the Show/Hell Awaits era too 🤘 Lol. And even though I wasn't a big Carr fan back when necessarily (in that era), ANIMALIZE IS STILL my personal favorite KISS album! LOTTA people swear by Creatures (and it's amazing) but..? IDK, maybe it's just a nostalgia thing as ANIMALIZE hit huge with ALL the other early to mid 80s Metal stuff back when as a kid, growing up submersed by it (thanks to my older sister 😏 lol.) And YES! I did, and have discovered Carr in my return to drumming in the mid to later 90s (especially with my old drum buddy John Longstreth being a huge fan of Carr.) And yeah man, my favorite actual SLAYER album..🤔 That is pretty difficult to pin down for me as they are probably my favorite band (IF such is possible lol.) and I love the early Show/Hell Awaits stuff for ONE era and category obviously as Show No Mercy and Haunting the Chapel WERE my 1st cassette purchases long after Hell Awaits hit. And? Of course, it was REIGN IN BLOOD not long after it's debut and my best friend (R.I.P.) called me over to his place to check it out and...😬 I was obviously blown away lol. And that's their "classic" for LOTTA people obviously but, I am STILL gonna say SOUTH OF HEAVEN IS probably my personal ALL TIME FAVORITE SLAYER ALBUM, with SEASONS coming up right up close on South's azz. 🤘😡🤘 I think Lombardo's drumming was at a peak during THOSE albums and again, maybe 🤔 it's the nostalgia thing too but, yeah, I LOVE ALL THE 80s SLAYER catalog! 😎🤘And of course awhile after DIVINE hit, and I had gotten BACK into playing drums and I seen the LIVE INTRUSION VHS tape, I was again, just floored, and it was THEN, that I decided just what REAL direction to take in my drumming on my return to drumming as I was/am self taught. I did take snare drum 🥁 in 4th n 5th grade, in school band, learned sheet music, and in band concerts? The teacher ALWAYS put me on the big BASS drum as I would just REALLY get into SWINGING that bass mallet with my long slim monkey arms and make er go BOOM. (According to the teacher, students, and audience 🤣 LOL!) ALWAYS a sucker for THEM KICK 🦶 DRUMS, dude! Ha ha ha. Anyways, I can literally talk DRUMS from here to eternity (as ya read) so yeah....Fuckin SLAYER, KEEP IT METAL and ROCK THE FUNK ON!!! 🤘😡🔥🥁🎸🤘

When I was a young man I loved these guys and wore out several cassette tapes listening to them...
When I was a young man playing my drums in the music business I loved playing the music but I hated the machoism, the arrogance, the boasting egos that just destroyed the band and muted all of the energy, the happiness and the enjoyment out of playing music.
Now I know what happened to these guys and why they just abruptly disappeared from the scene...
Rush made it because in the beginning the three of them decided to split their earnings evenly three ways and they kept their egos out of the music.....

Robin was one part leader, one part mediator and Every band needs a member (or members) to play these roles!. While Stephen may have been seen as the "leader of the band", Robin was the guy "smoothing it all over" within the band and Stephen's "right hand man!". Once the fame/money went to their heads and Robbin's role got diminished (partly by choice, partially due to drugs) the infighting, chaos, lack of direction, etc took hold as Robbin took a back seat in regard to the band dynamic, songwriting, etc and the band suffered because of it!.Robbin should have remained "front and center" and continued contributing songs, mediating the band and playing on the albums, but it seemed by this point Robbin had been "demoted" by the band and with an out of control habit, it's more than understandable why Robbin took a back seat and why the band "fell apart".and has Never been able to get it back together, nor rise to the level of some of their contemporaries like "Motley Crue!.. Unfortunately Robbin got caught up in addiction and addicted to the WORST drug of them all!. Heroin comes "First, Last & Always" and you will watch your band, life, career, family, etc go right down the drain and you'll STILL continue chasing the next high!. It has you by the b@lls and controls you through Fear and that Fear is the "sickness" the junkie is constantly trying to avoid!. It's a Terrible cycle to be caught up in no one is exempt from the hold of Heroin!.. RIP Robbin
