  • I drove the BYD ATTO 3 from 100% - 1% SOC (not game enough to take it to 0% but make sure you subscribe for when I do) and found out how far I could take it! Doing this really gave me confident on what the limit is. I did this 3 time over, each time in a different drive mode and regen configuration. Check out the spreadsheet for my result.

Drove down from Olinda Mount Dandeong to Glen Waverley last Saturday. Two people, sport mode, high regenerate. 25 Kms used 1.3Kwh with cost about 1 cent per km. Only used brake twice from Olinda to Burwood Hwy. Also full aircon 25 degrees and seat heating as well. Amazing car, love it so so much. The steering so precise just use one hand all the way up and down the hills.

Thank you for your informative video. Just checked the spreadsheet and noticed that with ECO mode and Regen set to high, you managed to get the actual 420Km advertised range for the ATTO 3 (WLTP). That was amazing.. the fact that the vehicle can actually be faithful to its advertised range is great and tells a lot about it.

    Agree your general observations.
I live in a rural area with an Atto3. I have found the type of driving conditions greatly affect achievable range. Additionally the car does lose charge when parked (up to 1KWhr per day powering its computer etc, its much better than a Tesla in this regard). So doing the test in a single trip should get you another 30km or so.
I have determined the vehicles best range speed is 85kmh+-3 using ECO mode.
Wind direction (headwind) noticeably decreases range. While you would think dead flat terrain would give best range it appears to get slightly better mileage in gently undulating terrain and speeding up on the downward slopes.
Carefree range in my experience is 350km. This is fairly easily achieved with a useful bit of reserve.
Dropdead range with basic economy driving (no special techniques) is about 420km.
By practicing suitable hypermiling techniques (at this stage I havent yet worked out exactly what these are for the Atto, but it certainly involves speeding up going downhill) over inflating tyres etc, 480km to drop dead might be possible.
I have heard of people claiming to have got over 500km, but that would certainly have had to involve a stiff tailwind.

I wish you also add the average speed for your trips to your Excel file. Kwh usage is important but average speed makes so much difference in calculations. I hope you also make a 90km and 120km average speed off city test like Bjorn in the future. Best of luck.

Did you have the AC or heating on and how conscious were you of the range while driving? In my tests the range drops drastically to 320 if u drive normally without looking at power drain.
I always suspected that eco/sport modes are just gimmicky and ur spreadsheet proves that. I also doubt if the kms shown by BYD is accurate. Maybe you could do a test on that too?

Watch atto3 owner's video on battery feedback intensity to understand, yes extended 60kw with 480km range display on full charge, at first I was shocked and was expecting over 400km, but the nature of our driving means just can't travel the distance, most of our trips are just 2/3/4 km from home, even the old petrol car was running out of fuel every two weeks/300 km, but would go 6-700km on the highways, from limited trips we did in the Atto3 we should get about 370km range on the trips to the mountains/south coast, so not bad.

My setup is High Regen, Normal driving mode, AC on comfort, fan speed on level 2 and temperature set to 25°C, tyre pressures at 260kPa cold. Outdoor ambient temp averages at 36°C-38°C though so that might be the cause of the high battery consumption

I have done a similar test in January when I first got my BYD ATTO3
    th-cam.com/video/h-Q87Ef10EU/w-d-xo.html
It’s over 6 days , I never saw any phantom energy loss , means the project remaining mileage stays same over night , however recently I see whenever I keep the car overnight there is difference of 2km every time

This is cool! I was actually able to get to 420km on high regen and eco mode. I did notice phantom drain on mine too. Not sure what caused it...maybe overnight temperature change

I strongly recommend to all viewers to not to do this test for their evs , it will damage the battery, not all evs has the same byd technology.

BYDs have locked out capacity to ensure there is no battery damage when run flat.

Congratulations, you just halved the lifespan of your battery.
Just like a mobile phone, IF you keep it topped up and never let it get below about 50% it will double the lifespan.

Sounds like BS to me, especially saying keep it above 50%. It's a very reliable and well made lithium battery I highly doubt the occasionally low percentage is going to destroy it.

LFP batteries have exceptionally low degradation so the comment is pure BS.

25-80 cycle is considered best for Li ion and this is LFP, lead acids have that 50% dod stuff
