I absolutely love how real you are with us and how graciously you discuss mental health and self care. Take time, lean on your support systems, and know that your braidaholic family is always here. Thank you for all that you do. Your honesty and realistic positivity 😊 have helped some of us out here struggling with mental health as well.
Literally got the alert for this video while lying in bed in a low moment… i cried towards the end for feeling understood and acknowledged… you are seriously an angel for making this video Kayley, thank you so much, been following you for nearly 15 years and thank you for being there! ❤❤❤ lots of love!
My favs and go-to's: rope braids for nightly protection, because it rewards you in the morning with pretty waves. Hair masks can help you detangle if it's really knotted. And only washing my bangs/front pieces in the sink when I cant handle a full shower
lol you're better than I! When my bangs look greasy, I spray my hair brush bristles with dry hair shampoo and just brush my bangs until they don't look gross anymore 😅
I rarely feel moved to comment on TH-cam, but was so pleasantly surprised by your focus on mental illness and self care along with practical solutions that I felt that I must. Kayley, you totally nailed it. You made me-and clearly many others-feel seen and understood. Thank you so much and keep up the good work. God bless you.
KC Davis talks about this in her book: How to Keep House While Drowning! She mentions how to deal when your overwhelmed with keeping up with the EVERYTHING, that sometimes its possible to get to the point where even brushing your hair is a struggle. She specifically mentions tying your hair up like you do, but also mentions silk sleep bonnets (which I'm obsessed with, so comfy!). I can't believe how long your hair is now! Lucious! 😍 Also, I'm so happy you're not ignoring/pretending about the mental health. So many of us are struggling right now, and seeing someone in real time deal with it can feel really comforting that we're not the only ones that are hanging by our fingernails
just an added tip for those who struggle with their mental health and find it hard to take care of their hair (hi! it’s me!😂) if your hair is extra dirty and you don’t have the time/energy to wash it just put it up in a slicked back pony or bun! add a little product and it’ll look intentional🤍
This is such a great video Kayley. I’m neurodivergent and there are so many burnout or shutdown days where it’s so hard to get myself in the shower, let alone to wash my hair. A huge help has been to start wearing a silk bonnet. I also got my kids silk pillow cases and we’re now waking up tangle free with our hair shiny. My daughter’s natural curls look fresh for days too. I love how easy it makes our mornings.
If you can braid, I like putting my hair in two french braids when I'm not doing well. It helps me feel put together, it's a nice repetitive task for a few minutes, and my hair is out of the way for the rest of the day. That way, it doesn't bother me, and if I don't touch it as much it can go longer between washes (and also, the braids hide greasy roots really well so they're a great option on days where i didn't manage to get a shower). And if you make them loose enough, you can just go to bed with them in and have nice contained hair in the morning!
The rinse and repeat method has been such a game changer for me!! It helps my hair stay cleaner for longer so I’m not having to deal with it as often. Started doing it like a year ago and I haven’t gone back!!
You hit the nail on the head with this one. I'm so impressed by your compassion and preemtiveness. Because hair does matter to self-esteem. And, at least for me, when I came out of a depressive rut, this little bit of self-esteem can go a long way. you're an angel Kayley! ❤
A tip of mine that I think would count is an oil mist (drugstore!! Ogx makes one but i like herbal essences better). If you get a lightweight one and mist it over your lengths before bed I’ve found less tangles and breakage in the mornings, and it’s a little lighter than reapplying leave in conditioners! Love the video Kayley, we missed you so much!
This is so good! Whenever I feel like I’m slipping into a physical or mental downturn, I always use that last bit of energy to wash and blow dry my hair to keep it low maintenance for a few days. Also, I finally just got a microfiber hair towel at 33! WOW what a game changer! SO happy to see your face Kayley ❤
I definitely needed this today, like my mental health has been taking another dip and I find washing my hair and showering to be a really high effort task even when my mental health is good and so this video was exactly what I needed. I have been watching you since I was in middle school in like 2011 and I am glad that I have been able to grow with you!
Things that helped me as someone who has spent time in bed due to mental and physical health: - Have hair stuff (brush, scrunchies) in my nightstand. - accepting that sometimes things have got to give (temporarily) so shorter hair (but still able to put it up) and growing out my bangs but having cute clips when I do go out or have an online appointment. - I love my wet brush, it detangles so well - doing things where I’m more comfortable, I always have to blow dry my hair but I can do it in bed! -when blow drying hair it really helps to do it in sections. I divide it in 4, put it in clips and suddenly it’s way less overwhelming.
added tip for anybody who gets annoyed with washing their hair, whenever my hair gets a little bit dirty I use this Raw Sugar Rosemary Vinegar Hair Rinse. You put it on wet hair (roots and ends), massage it in, and let it sit for like 3 minutes then rinse it out. Keeps my hair clean and soft!
Yes please! So nice to see you share what helped you during tough times, so that we all can have more ideas what to try and have a better chance to find what works for us. Thanks 💜
A tip I learned from having allergies: if your hair is getting a bit dirty but you can't wash it for whatever reason, wrap it up before bed. A hair scarf, cap, whatever works for you. This keeps any grease/dirt/product/etc that's on your hair from getting all over your pillow and then all over your face as you sleep.
This video was absolutely fantastic and, as a chronically ill person who spends a lot of time in bed, I really appreciate the empathy you included here. My situation isn't mentioned a lot in these kinds of things and it felt wonderful to feel so seen.
Tip for mental health and physical health reasons you're in bed...if you have to wear headgear of any sort (like with a CPAP) containing your hair in a satin bonnet helps protect it from the friction of the headgear too.
Kayley, thank you so much for this video! It truly meant a lot to me to hear you talk about these things. I've been quite sick for over 10 years, and figuring out how to care for my hair and not hate how it looks has been a journey for me! I really like the tips that you shared, and I want to look into getting some soft hair ties! Some other things that have been helpful for me personally are: 1) having shorter hair so that I'm not as self-conscious about how thin it is, 2) working to believe my husband when he tells me that my hair is beautiful, and 3) having realistic expectations for what I'm able to do for my hair. Recently I got a shower stool, as standing up in the shower can be pretty exhausting for me, especially when I wash my hair. Being able to sit has been such a help for me, and I don't feel as anxious or tired about washing my hair now. Again, thank you so much for this video! It helps some very tender parts of my heart feel seen. ❤️❤️
you recommended the loose bun that I live in basically whenever I'm home - literally I stared at the screen as a mirror, identical buns being sported, and I CACKLED. I paused it to show to my partner and he also laughed aloud because it's so exactly how I wear my hair all the time lmao
I’m actually on holiday atm and stuck in bed with back pain. My hair is always the last thought on my mind and when I do have time I clarify and then Olaplex and air dry. I like the Function of Beauty leave in conditioner and use half a pump (I tied a clear elastic to the pump as I knew a full pump would be too much even when I had waist length hair) When I really want to make myself feel better I put on makeup. Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks and welcome back. Love the longer hair too ❤️
Ive been sleeping for years with a loose bun. My 6 years old kept on waking with tangled hair and didnt liked me trying ro brush it for school . Now its the loose bun for her too 😅👌
Thank you, this is exactly what I need right now. I have anxiety, chronic pain and I'm currently dealing with an injury too and sometimes it's just too much and I find myself really struggling and just throwing my hair into a high ponytail or bun. These are great tips and I love the way you spoke about health and self care ❤️
In my experience, changing the brush so it fits the type of hair helps tremendously fx bigger brush head for longer hair, brushing from the ends and up towards the scalp with conditioner. If it get's stuck, don't force it, add a bit more conditioner and spread out the tangle then brush. If I'm not feeling well, I'll brush my hair before heading into the shower because it helps with the tangles afterwards. Not rubbing the hair dry with a towel, but padding/scrunching it prevents tangles. Removing the hair on the brush every time you are done really helps with my hair not getting oily because of all the dust and stuff gathered on the brush and occasionally washing it as well. Either way, hope this might help someone out there and have as wonderful day
french pins/fair forks have changed my hair game!! i feel like my hair looks pretty when i take it out as opposed to claw clips which make my wavy hair look crunchy hehe!
In addition to soft scrunchies and claw clips, I also recommend Hair sticks and hair forks! A bit of a learning curve, but they can be really pretty, and they are so good for your hair. I use hair sticks and claw clips almost exclusively, and my hairdresser is still impressed by how much it helps my hair (and trust me, I do not otherwise pamper my hair lol).
Thank you so much for this video!! I have been watching you for so long. I got this notification after taking care of my 2mo all day. When you said that these tips could be used for busy new mom's I almost cried. I felt so seen. I've really been needing a new low maintenance hair routine. My hair has been suffering a bit from being pregnant and having no energy to being a new mom with no time. I just watched this soaking up it all up. Thank you. I really appreciate it.
OMG thank you for creating this. I have spent the last 3 years in bed due to chronic illness and cannot shower regularly anymore, let alone wash my own hair as often as I need to. I resorted to having extremely short hair to cope. I am so heartened to have seen this on your channel. It will really help me, and it validates the steps I have already taken. I have heard from other friends with chronic illness that in addition to using leave-in conditioner, they also use leave-in shampoo. Have you heard of this? I haven’t personally tried it yet but have heard it’s useful when you have to go a long time without washing your hair. Thank you also for sharing your story in your previous video and alluding to it again here. I am sorry for what you have had to go through, and might be still going through. Your bravery in sharing what has happened to you makes me feel really seen. I have never before encountered a hair stylist who accounted for the full human experience beyond looking cute or stylish. We need help to look after our hair in times when we are genuinely not well - and you are amazing for finally fulfilling that need. Much love to you, and thank you!
Great tips Kayley! The video reminded me of the hairstylist that brushes out giant knots on people's hair & all of them say they stop brushing because they were depressed 😢💔
I feel like I go through waves of neglecting my hair because I cannot bear to sit and detangle it at the end of the day when I have zero energy left so thank you for such a realistic video ❤
This is such a great video! So many times when people talk about low maintenance hair it is like here is a quick 15 minute routine involving several heat tools and that is just not realistic (for me at least) when I am looking for basic. On the other hand, brush and put up in clamp-- that seems a bit more feasible. I also really appreciate how you address physical and mental health as barriers, we don't see that brought up enough.
Hi Kayley, thank you for talking about mental health, and also talking about mental health while - during - being in a healthy relationship. After 6 months of being with my boyfriend (now husband) I started with anxiety attacks, crying non-stop, to the point that I needed professional help. This happened during uni days, so my, no-so-close, friends, thought I was crying because of my relationship... but actually my partner loved - loves - me so much that THAT started shaking my toxic held beliefs; to the point that I had an identity crisis because my internal image did not correlate the loving and kind image that my partner reflected back to me. After years of therapy, I'm kinder to myself :) Xxx
The part about making sure not to skip leave-in conditioner/detangler is a lesson I recently learned! I was too tired to do that extra step and holy cow what a difference. My hair was constantly tangling over the next couple days which hadn't happened before- those products really make a difference!
Thank you for making this video! As someone who deals with mental and physical issues, I'm constantly trying to figure out what to do with my hair. I used to love styling it, but now I rarely have the energy to blow dry it. My favorite tip/trick is to use a microfiber towel and then let it hair dry 90% of the way. Then I do a Dutch braid (sometimes 1 braid, other times 2 braids - depending on how tight/loose I want my waves to be) and go to sleep. When I wake up I keep the braid(s) in while I shower, get dressed and put make up on. Then I take my hair out and run my fingers through it and do a side part. Not only does it look like I put a lot of effort into my hair, it stays wavy until I wash it again - I feel like it's easier to style when their is already a bit of a wave there. Also, my hair is fine and gets oily quickly, so I use a powder dry shampoo. I've learned that the best time to use the dry shampoo is before bed. That way you wake up with it already in your hair and it has had time to soak up all of the oils and such.
You are such a bright light. This popped up on my tablet and I was so happy to see you. To educate us with your extensive knowledge and personal experience of haircare while sharing your personal struggles of mental health is not only brave, it's BRILLIANT! .
Thank you Hair Queen! These tips are so good and your compassionate comments are such a breath of fresh air. You are a brave soul for sharing. Much love from Spain
One thing I’ve found helpful is, if I have the bandwidth, I take the time to heat style my hair into curls once a week. I love wearing my hair natural when I can, but it takes a lot more effort to maintain/style and I can’t quickly brush it like that. If it’s heat styled then it takes little/no effort the rest of the week, and if I do the curls tight on the first day then they slowly fall throughout the week. I miss my natural hair, but you gotta do what you gotta do!
I love my microfibre towel! It makes such a difference as my hair holds a lot of water. I put my hair in two loose dutch braids to sleep, which I find most comfortable as I find a low braid doesn’t hold my hair enough and a bun pulls on my hair too much. Thank you for these tips!! I’m so excited to try them!
I know you said in your last video that when you made this one at the time you didn't know if you would ever post it to TH-cam but I am so glad you did. It had so many helpful tips and was very informative while also keeping my interest.
I’m so glad that you’re back, Kayley! You have a really special gift with having the ability to be honest and genuine in your videos. Judging from other people’s comments, I’m not the only one who thinks that. It’s so nice to see your slightly self deprecating gesture, in your intro, when you put your hands under your chin and flare your elbows out. Funny and sweet.😊
when life is too much i often put some leave in conditioner in and just french braid it relatively tight and let it be like that for like a day or 2 (if i dont need to go to the office or smth). itll be tangly but not terrible when i take it out and its still the leave in conditioner helps. and its out of my face for a bit
I've also found with shampooing, that if I have a little condiment bottle thing (clean of course) and I put some shampoo and water in that and shake it up, then I can get the shampoo directly on my scalp and my hair feels so much cleaner with less effort.
Kayley, what a beautiful video! I can see how much time and care you took on the filming and editing, and the content is real, relatable, and helpful. Thank you for your vulnerability with your heart to help others! Hair hack add on - I love the braid like you showed in the video for comfortable hair sick in bed, but I take it up a notch. No hair tie! I have curly hair. So I’ve found that when I get to the end of the braid, I pull the three strands together into one stand, and then separate out curls mixing the 3 strands of the braid into a lot of different stands on the end. This way I don’t have to tease my ends or wear a hair tie. I can be comfortable and protect my hair. This wouldn’t work for a pull out fluffed up braid, but if you’re keeping it simple for bed it stays in place! Love you, Kayley!
This is such a great and practical video! Thank you so much for sharing and helping others with a stigmatized topic. Something I've found helpful during challenging times was to use a bonnet to protect my hair around the clock. When I was bedridden from pregnancy sickness or had small kids pulling on my hair constantly, being able to contain my hair in something easy was a lifesaver.
Thank you so much for coming back you add so much to my life and your content is amazing. Congratulations on overcoming your OCD. as a new mom who had an emergency c section… recovery was awful and self care went away and depression set in… quick tips use a curl band at night so you wake up at least to pretty waves. I love cozy confidence bands or effortless muse. They’re amazing products
Kayla, it's wonderful to see you back on TH-cam. Thanks for all your helpful suggestions. Personally I dread wash day as the end result of my hair style is never what I hope it will be which makes me feel ugly and depressed. Quick question for you: what is the difference between these two Bumble and Bumble products and when should each one be used? 1) Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Frizz Reducing Hair Oil 2) Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat Protectant Leave In Conditioner Primer TSM! 🙂
I use Pantene Miracle Rescue 10 in 1 for my two young daughters and it works WONDERS on their super knotty hair. I’ve used low to high end leave-ins on them and this one provides some of the best slip when brushing.
Thank you Kayley!!! Great topic! Almost everyone has gone through a phase like this, but sadly we don't talk about (and thus accept / embrace) these moments enough. But you also offered tips with respect and even more compassion❤️
I have microfiber towel scrunchies that I use on vacation. Really helps sucking up the water in a decent time! I have insanely thick hair & I put it up for about 30 minutes & my hair is decently dry!
This is perfect timing! I’m about to have baby two at the end of next month and I’m trying to take care of my hair to grow out my natural color, thanks Kayley! So happy you’re back 🥰
my routine in low moments is always a deep conditioning/oil treatment on for far too long and then a salicylic acid/ exfoliation scalp when I finally get round to washing it, saves time shampooing and my scalp is always thankful
If you have greasy roots with ends that are dry, fragile, or frizzy, but all you can manage that day is dry shampoo, try a dry oil spray for the ends of your hair. I sometimes put a bit on before I get in there with the dry shampoo, for a bit of protection when I'm brushing that out, but mostly, I use it to calm down frizz afterwards. It doesn't need to be an expensive one - mine is made by Schwarzkopf in their got2b range. It doesn't leave the ends of my fine, thin hair stringy like a leave in conditioner, serum or hair oil can. Also, if you can manage it, take the time to give yourself a head massage while you're rubbing the dry shampoo into your roots. It makes it feel more like a self-care step, and less like something you're only doing because you can't manage a shower.
I’m so excited to hear you talk about this! One, your dedication to transparency and grace around mental health is great. Two, I love hearing about how I can help my hair go longer and be healthier!
I watched a TED talk that said chores and your ability to do them at any given time is not good or bad. IT IS NEUTRAL. As in being able to have a shower that day doesn't make you a good person and not being able to have a shower doesn't mean you're a bad person. Whether you do it or not is a neutral event that has no baring on your worth as a person. My mind was blown!
Appreciate this so much thank you, as someone with chronic fatigue too and other disabilities it means so much you talk about this stuff with no judgement and so much love 🥺🥺 as well as it being legit helpful lol I rarely actually try the hairstyles you show but so often pick up such great tips as well as loving your creativity, passion and kindness, so easy to watch and have done for so so many years 🥰 No pressure to be consistent with videos but proud of you for posting these 💜💜💜
Ugh! My girl I'm so glad you're back in my feed ❤ and this video is so necessary for so many of us. Bonnets and hair clips are my best friend, especially when I have zero mental capacity for hair maintenance. 🥰 And so proud of you

I need advice how to have my hair stop being frizzy and breaking 😢
As a therapist, I’m definitely recommending these tips to clients (and taking notes myself)! Love you, Kayley! ❤

Hard agree!! The slick back hair trend came just in time for us 😂
You can also put a scarf or a turban over it even at home, so the oils don't touch your skin and it doesn't break out.
Greasy hair also goes really well into braids, I do 2 Dutch braids or Dutch rope braids and they look better with greasy hair.
@@loonybinrejectoooh I’m going to try that. I just don’t suit slicked back hair at all so this might be a good alternative!
Yes! I have also recently discovered Hats...they cover up all sorts and makes me feel comfy/blocks out big lights
If this isn't absolutely perfect for me right now. Sometimes it's hard enough to just brush it and keep it clean. But this could really help. ❤
Been there! I hope it helps - I used a lot of these when I was in that time.

i’ve missed you kayley! take your time of course, but i’m so excited to see your comeback🔥
What an absolutely practical, compassionate video. Thank you for sharing yourself with the Internet, Kayley. You bring so much to this space.
So happy to have new videos coming
Another tip I would add: satin pillowcase or satin bonnet to sleep
Those jaw clips are the most fun and pretty hair accessories I've seen in a long time! Totally bookmarking that store for future considerations :D
New mom over here, sometimes I barely wash my hair... 😅
Thank you so much! ❤
As a nee mum with PPD this had truly made my day ❤ thank you

Cantu Leave-in conditioner was AMAZING. Even for my fine, wavy hair
I have never needed a video more than this😅

I love Davines Oi oil and leave in conditioner. I also use their shampoo and liquid luster. Love the scent and it makes my hair so soft and shiny.
I really love the Eva NYC magic 10 in 1 detangler!

Yay!! Seeing you post Kayley just made my day so much better. I only just put my hair up in a ponytail lol 😂 I need some hairinspo ❤
Sooo happy to have you back here!! I hope you’re giving yourself some grace too!!
Great tips Kayley! The video reminded me of the hairstylist that brushes out giant knots on people's hair & all of them say they stop brushing because they were depressed 😢💔
Thank you for this beautiful video. Currently watching from bed with multiple chronic illnesses.
I miss my natural hair, but you gotta do what you gotta do!
i love the garnier leave in conditioner!
As a young mom with four kids I needed this!
Thank you Kaylee! You are such a wonderful voice for practical self care that is so needed. You’re awesome 💕
I started using a silk bonnet for sleep to contain my hair at night and my hair is fine and slightly wavy. I noticed it helps with less tangles too
Kayley, you are a breath of fresh air!
I also love the Quai Detox Shampoo weekly it makes a huge difference for me.
when life is too much i often put some leave in conditioner in and just french braid it relatively tight and let it be like that for like a day or 2 (if i dont need to go to the office or smth). itll be tangly but not terrible when i take it out and its still the leave in conditioner helps. and its out of my face for a bit
So excited and happy to have you back on TH-cam. Missed your tips and tricks and just your joyful vibe.
It’s so nice to have you back on TH-cam Kayley! Very glad that you’re doing better
1) Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Frizz Reducing Hair Oil
2) Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat Protectant Leave In Conditioner Primer
TSM! 🙂
I have 2 microfiber towels and I'll use one to gently squeeze water out of my hair and then wrap it in a dry one. It helps sooooo much!
I use Pantene Miracle Rescue 10 in 1 for my two young daughters and it works WONDERS on their super knotty hair. I’ve used low to high end leave-ins on them and this one provides some of the best slip when brushing.
Please take us to the salon next time you get your haircut. Xo Sarah
So proud of you, Kayley!
I love this video ❤❤❤ self care when you're living with mental illness can feel like running a marathon. These tips are very helpful❤
Thank you so so much for sharing this with us!!! I did a happy dance when I saw you had uploaded this! It’s amazing to see your videos again ❤
I love the Biolage Hydrasource line. It has three different formulas for different levels of hydration and “heaviness.”
Woo hooo!!!! 🎉🎉🎉❤❤ Awesome Thairapy. 😊
I genuinely love the suave kids silly apple detangler-it’s cheap, it works well for me, and the smell is a little hit of nostalgia
Loved the video! Glad your back! 😊❤
Thank you for this video! You have such a warm and welcoming heart that shines through your videos ❤
Appreciate this so much thank you, as someone with chronic fatigue too and other disabilities it means so much you talk about this stuff with no judgement and so much love 🥺🥺 as well as it being legit helpful lol I rarely actually try the hairstyles you show but so often pick up such great tips as well as loving your creativity, passion and kindness, so easy to watch and have done for so so many years 🥰 No pressure to be consistent with videos but proud of you for posting these 💜💜💜
So glad you’re posting again. Loving these videos. 😊❤
So glad your back Kayley ❤
Thank you, you are so adorable. I love seeing you back.
Ugh! My girl I'm so glad you're back in my feed ❤ and this video is so necessary for so many of us. Bonnets and hair clips are my best friend, especially when I have zero mental capacity for hair maintenance. 🥰 And so proud of you
I love this video and it has reinforced that I am doing the right things for me and helped me to stop feeling bad about myself. Thank you
Verb oil is my absolute favorite 😍
