Dream of a Rarebit Fiend (1906)

- A short, silent film starring John P. Brawn as the titular fiend, who having gorged himself on Welsh Rarebit - melted cheese on toast - stumbles to bed via a rather hallucinatory encounter with a lamp post and falls into a troubled sleep. Inaugurated by a trio of pickaxe-wielding demons, his subsequent cheese-fuelled dream involves an inelegant flight through his window and over an urban nightscape, finally ending with a skewering by his pyjamas on a weather vane. The film features some pioneering special effects including a fully spinning sky and the aforementioned demons.
The sequence is based on a comic strip by Winsor McCay, alias “Silas”. Dream of the Rarebit Fiend was McCay’s longest running comic, totalling over 300 episodes more than his better known Little Nemo. More here: publicdomainreview.org/collec... - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
I just heard about this film in the Modern Marvels episode on The Motion Picture, so immediately came to watch. It’s funny (intentionally so) and very imaginative for the time. It was interesting to watch a comic actor, in contrast to earlier short studies of athletes and dancers.

*WELSH RAREBIT*
1 lb. shredded cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon butter
1 cup beer
1 whole egg
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp. salt (some prefer ½ tsp.)
½ tsp. paprika
¼ tsp. mustard powder
(¼ tsp. curry powder)
A shake of cayenne pepper, or a dash of Tabasco
Several slices of white bread, toasted brown.
Note on ingredients:
-Some flavor is lost from cheese in melting, so be sure to use sharp cheddar.
-The beer traditionally used is brown beer, also known as October ale, or nut brown ale. Made from brown malt, it it considered by many to go very well with cheese. Two good brands are Newcastle Brown Ale, and Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale.
Cooking instructions:
Melt butter in a double boiler, stir in beer.
When beer is warm stir in cheese.
Stir constantly until cheese is melted.
Beat egg until white and yolk are thoroughly blended and add to mixture slowly, stirring constantly while adding.
Add worcestershire sauce, salt, paprika, and mustard (and curry) Stir in.
Dust surface lightly with cayenne(red) pepper, or dash Tabasco. Stir in.
Serve by putting slice of toast in a soup plate, and pour the rarebit over it. Supply knife, fork and spoon.
Chilled tomato juice or V-8 make an excellent drink with this.
I sure would not share a table with that man at mealtime!

Seriously though, I know how every scene was composited, and could see where they used a harness and a rotating set, and it _still_ tells the story pretty well. Practical effects didn't always have to be perfect, or even transparent, to be effective. Now any discontinuity will get you a sea of rolled eyes.

They would show this in a theater and have a small pit orchestra playing music to it, but there wasn't recorded music.

@@stacyenzmann1230 Be more fun if there was no orchestra, but instead they handed out instruments as the audience filed in. You get a kazoo. You get an accordion. You get a drum. Here, have a set of bagpipes.

Edison's company likely recorded their own version to synchronize with.
