@@lostchron mosquitoes were always pure evil so I mean it makes sense and to be fair sound like talking didn’t exist in film till like 1929 so they definitely had limitations early on
From wikipedia; " The Detroit Times described audiences laughing until they cried, and "[going] home feeling that [they] had seen one of the best programs" in the theater's history. "
I think this is still very well-made. The reason it looks uncanny to a lot of people is because many of the things we take for granted in animation weren't there yet, and we notice their absence even if we can't put our finger on it. The most notable being the lack of animation cels, which weren't invented until 1915. EVERY frame was completely redrawn by hand, background and all (which is why the lines look unsteady). Reversing the footage was also used a lot to cut down on the amount of re-drawing, which can make the movements feel mechanical. And techniques like Squash & Stretch would only be popularized by later studios. If we were in a theater audience in 1912 watching this, it wouldn't feel nearly as off-putting.
@@JohnnyProctor9 As of this writing (March 23, 2023), based on what I was able to find, there's about 51 people left who were born before this cartoon was made (A few more out there could be possible, but the total couldn't be more than 75), and the oldest of them was four years old at the time.
It’s obviously intentionally triggering a highly traumatic event response - even though this guy could draw anything - he hadn’t developed the principles of animation because he was so early in its development breaking ground
ok thats creepy, i trully appreciate the time taken to draw this! But its really creepy how it portrayes people in 1910s 😨😨😨, Its like so long ago - they all dead...
Everyone is commenting that this video is somewhat creepy. I don't think it is creepy... I think the creepiest thing is the topic. Edit: I commented this a year ago and I have no idea what I meant. I guess I was probably referring to the creepiness of parasitism. A creature that can only survive by taking from others.
While I understand the sentiment I don't fully agree. There are a lot of things that can be done in 3D that can't be done in 2D and vice versa, both have their strengths and flaws and I don't think it's fair to discount CGI entirely, because there have been plenty of great cartoons and movies made with the medium.
Mosquito explodes at the end. What does that mean? Did the critter finally get wacked and splattered as commonly happens? I don't they self destruct on their own.
Literally every possibility was open to them. No ideas already taken. And they are like "Yeah a mosquito torturing some dude."
Must have been an eternal problem that even back then they were already so bothered by it that they took it as a subject for animation.
I mean, it's very relatable.
So? What's your point?

I am absolutely obsessed with old animations but this is scary
The whole time, I kept thinking the mosquito was going to give him a lobotomy, but at 4:33, the mosquito goes bigger and just teabags the dude.
That's one big mosquito.
Considering the time that this was animated, this is excellent animation.
This actually teaches a good lesson about greed. If you get too greedy, you will self-destruct.

Thank you for the info. I love animation history.
2:20 thats the creepiest face i have ever seen
I honestly am pretty unnerved by this video. Kinda disturbing. That having been said, thank you for posting it.
I’m glad you said that, K2, it made me very uneasy but I can’t say why and the music irritated me. I found that I was scratching my self!🤣
As for me the most disturbing part is that many actions are on repeat.
You're not the only one disturbed by it... especially after it greedily consumed all that blood. I truly couldn't wait for its butt to POP!
I'm glad the mosquito didn't stick its thingy in his eye
Great efforts by one of the masters of animation ,Winsor McCay ...
For such an old cartoon, this has a distinct Mike Judge feel.

kind of weird to think that almost everybody that was alive when this was made are already dead 😳
Literally everybody, you'd think...

wonderful to see his animations. My son and I studied "little nemo".

Don't know why but I feel this is accurate when compared to real mosquitoes
très belle animation, merci beaucoup pour le video ;)

What about the abnormal size of the mosquito it’s as big as the door
Anyone knows why the frames keep being repeated? What was the technology limitation that caused this?
Repeating frames is called looping and it is still used in animation. Saves effort.

What is the name of the music composed? And the composer?
Probably this music is just for this cartoon
