The proportion of recreational archers to active competitive archers has something to do with this. If your club is focussed on recreational archery over going to competitions then people tend to be more relaxed and don’t put the effort in learning the knowledge, developing conditioning especially as you say when they want increase bow draw weight etc. As you say it is a hobby or pastimes that has a spectrum of users from children to pensioners and is accessible to so many.
I honestly think this is one of your best thought out and instructional recordings as it touches on so many key parts.
    Thanks for sharing this.

My regret is that I've only started archery 2 years ago, I'm now 31 years old. When I was young, I've always wanted to do archery but for some reason I never had that click in my head to look for local archery clubs until recent. I'm learning and practising archery as much as I can given my current life conditions, but I'm absolutely enjoying it, all with the ups and downs.
I've also recently bought myself a flatbow for fun shooting, it's another learning curve but I'm happy with it and looking forward to learning more archery disciplines in due time.

Same man. 30 years old, started about half a year ago.
Never had the click to follow that interest when I was younger, hehe.
I'm trying my hand at traditional archery with a thumbring; it's hard, but very rewarding.

Exactly. I just got my first bow a couple weeks ago and aim for 200 shots a day in my back yard. My only experience was in high school as a class period of learning archery and then the next day we spent half the class practicing & then a competition (which I placed 2nd or 3rd).
When I was in my teens I was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do & was decent at my father's favorite sport - golf. Archery is a fantastic culmination of the 2 disciplines. I wish more people could try it and would stumble into NuSensei's videos. They have been a godsend here in the middle of nowhere without knowing of any local clubs or archery stores. Best of luck mate.

I am currently juggling between my final year of my Ph.D in Medicine submitting in February. As I am closer to submitting the less time I am able to go to the field, however I try to do stretch bands and SPTs as much as I can. When I haven’t shot for 5 days on the field or not having seen my coach for 3 weeks, I can see the drop in my performance. Hopefully after I graduate, I will be able to do it a lot more again.
Also as I find gyms overwhelming (I am on the autism spectrum) , conditioning is the one thing that is holding me back, however we have found the way around it. I got the ring fit adventure to use for fitness training. Hopefully it all works out!
    Wish me luck!

After decades of no archery. I arrogantly and obliviously bought a 40lb samic....40lb at 28 inches....and stacking up to 65lb at 31inch draw. I did hurt myself and was out of commission for almost two months. Listen to the guys when they say to start with a low poundage bow. Please...for your own good. Also, my horse bows dont stack as aggressively (hardly any stack actually) so ya might want to try a long drawing bow of some kind. Avoid the stack....thats the back killer....for me at least.

I too went out and bought a 40lb Samick Sage at 28" for my 33.5" draw length. Before I even set it up the guys at my local lane told me I was making a big mistake and get something meant for my height.
Never pulled the Samick, and took their advice. Can't tell you enough how happy I am that I made that choice to listen and invest in a recurve suited for me.

Great point on the knowledge, it's a sh*tload of knowledge and if you are making your own gear it can turn into an academic discipline.

“Archery is easy to learn but hard to master.”
Kinda reminds me of learning bass guitar. It felt easy to learn in the beginning since most of what you’re doing is filling in the gaps between the percussion and the melody. But once you delve much deeper in the bass guitar, it gets much much more difficult.

    Some good points.
My primary goal is relaxation with my very stressful job, but that is a deceptively simplistic statement. For this to occur I’m clearing my mind, focusing on my form, trying to work out what worked, and what didn’t. The minuscule differences from shot to shot.
Getting on the trophy board has been pretty good as well.
My coach, who is also an ex British, European and World champion, in his chosen form says very similar things.
I have seen a change from my first shots, where I was happy not to be pulling arrows out of the wall. To today where I’m less happy to be out of the middle ring, competing against my wife, who started at the same time, and who often beats me. Our difference being who slept better.
    My learning continues……
    My conditioning is improving.
My goal- a better shot than my last one, in the X.

At my lesson today, at a local club I had a guy there who 100% fits the "doesn't want to learn" group, lol.
The instructor kept trying to explain simple form to him, and he'd have poor results and kept saying "If I just shot how I used to I'd be closer" or "Following you is making me worse".
But when you look at his average grouping, it was in fact better although not as close to the X, but that's just a sight issue I'd imagine.
After the lesson when we were leaving, he grumbled under his breath something along the lines of "they don't know anything here..."
I just thought we probably won't see him again.
I had a great time though, the people there were amazing and very helpful, improved my form a lot today which I'm thankful for.

Yes to all points except goals. Yes it‘s important to have them, realistic goals mind you. My performance anxiety has taken away my ability before to channel all the training and conditioning into performance. I literally knew I could shoot the 10, but couldn‘t handle the pressure of actually being first. Since then I‘ve integrated more mental training than physical or at least equal amounts

Hi, thanks for the video. Personally, what holds me a lot is the fact that I can't spend as much time as I'd like practicing.
I work full-time, have 2 kids to raise, a house to fix, a lot of social activities other than sports which prevent me to train a lot so I just lowered my expectations and would just like to improve my group size and progress in further shooting distances.

Interesting. My other passion is photography and the same sort of development is needed. The "tripod" is different with three legs: camera skills, compositional skills and thirdly artistic vision and intent. Progress is also deceptive. It is easy to learn to make a few decent "snapshots" but takes years of dedicated effort to achieve a level of mastery. I am a believer in the 10,000 hour rule both for archery and photography and many other endeavors. For both, very few are interested in making the commitment and doing the work

I started a new program where the first lesson was to face the target, lift your hands, then turn your body, followed by pulling the bow, all without holding a bow. I felt very stupid at first. After doing it for a while my arms became very sore. But now I don't feel so stupid.

Differences in background and cultures. If we do that with western kids (I am european), clubs will die by lack of members and young ones. On the subject of schedule, most adults work long hours, and sometimes can't even go to competition.

If someone follows a trend and starts acting like that, its just what I said; an actor m/v, fake, not real, cheater, etcetera. Thats a type of person that or doesn't want to know itself and probably never will in lack of it and lack of intelligence or has such an awfull personality that it needs to act to fit in somewhere.

My club is only open on the Sunday so no way to shoot more often. In the summer when we go outdoors they offer an extra session in the evening. Possible that some of the more serious clubs might have more availability to shoot.

Doesn't OZ Bow fill in somewhat after CnT?
Aren't most clubs open 24/7.......................all around me are?

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Oz Bow is optional. Not all clubs offer it, most archers don't do it, and it's basically an extended 3-week basics course that includes some elements of technique and bow setup. It doesn't provide the comprehensive education on archery that builds archers to the next level. There is largely a lack of support for the intermediate archers, with most of the support happening at the high performance and CnT. What the sport needs is a professional coaching scene - more common in the US, for example, where you can find a coach through their registrar and pay for their services. Here in Australia, there's just no demand for it. Most people just want to shoot casually and the skill floor is very low, so there's often no incentive to receive coaching, free or otherwise.
Most clubs I know aren't 24/7 - at least definitely not the 24 hour part. Availability largely depends on what the club is able to arrange. Most clubs are on council grounds, which means that usage depends on council allocations. If the field is a shared public space, that will greatly limit when members can practise.
