Another great episode Al, very informative!!
We bought a 2004 model 3.0 Outback 10 years ago because we couldn't afford a 3.0RB sedan at the time, despite the slow changing box and fly by wire throttle that shrugged whenever you asked it to reach for full acceleration, it was a powerful family wagon that hauled us all around in safety, comfort and relative frugality......
I eventually took out the central huge muffler which gave it a really nice rasp at higher revs, but wish I'd known what Al knows back then, proper extractors with high flow cats and 4 cylinder mufflers at the rear would have been the go :). The muffler shop I went to were clueless.....

really interesting Als surprised more people dont get on the ez30s cause everything ive heard to this point is that while they can make big power, due to the thin walls, require bulk $$ to strengthen all the internals [everything needs to be forged].
btw for those that dont know, porsche handled the design for the head/breathing system in the ez30. these motors are pretty special things for a regular family car

    • @theskidfactory

You've heard things but we've done it and the engine is fine. EJs need way more work to handle the power an EZ will. The cylinder walls are very thick compared to an EJ engine.

This information is gold. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I have a 3.0R 5EAT wagon, same colour as the one in this video. I really wanted to get a 6 speed but they're rare and expensive, especially if you want low km. Mines only done 68,000km so it should run sweet for years to come. I recently installed an X-Force Cat back because one of my stock mufflers had a hell of a rattle and I figured if I'm going to spend money on the exhaust I may as well get something that sounds sweet. So glad I finally did it because it sounds amazing now. The next step is getting a set of raptor headers. Its just a pain that they don't sell a pre-made Y pipe with 3rd cat delete. I live in Wanaka NZ so there aren't really any shops around here that can fabricate something like that. Do you know if there are any companies that sell an EZ30 Y pipe to mate the Raptor headers to a cat back exhaust? I'm sure if you set up a jig and made a few they would sell like hot cakes and I'd definitely buy one. Cheers

E85 is an option on a facelift gen 4 ecu. 1mb ecu allows for more fuel tables across the 3 drive modes. My tuner just flashed e85 flex software on my factory ecu and it ran ethanol without problem. Supercharged on 9psi made 230kw @ 4 wheels.

    • @theskidfactory

I have Raptor Stainless headers mated to a custom Y section straight piped (cat delete, legal here) 3” pipe, replaced the crap factory Y section that had 3cats in total really rest it’s the car as you say, but still with the factory O2 sensors ( 2 at each location like factory, all factory spec length mated to an XForce 3.0r spec Catback with its resonator and twin mufflers and single 4” tips on each, sounds bit louder than I wanted but it’s got the rumble from idle but that flat 6 not 2.0 rumble, where as stock, had nothing at idle, she’s loud on cold start but once warm settles down, but hit the throttle and she will turn any STI Impreza UEL aftermarket setup, she purrs if she just minimum throttle course it’s a 6spd MT, I do need a ECU retune. I’ll go turbo in the future when I rebuild her.. good to see someone building these and appreciating them. I’ll never sell this car as it’s a limited variant AVCS 06 Blitzen. body kit and other stuff wheels etc, just don’t see them, ai see gen 3 Blitzens occasionally but I have never seen another Blitz like mine in a wagon and MT.

could it be because it doesn't have an EJ in it??

this is always funny to me- in Germany (where I see a solid 3 Subarus a year) they are "known" for never breaking... guess the most common cars tend to get the most hate

@@olik136 Their most common engine had a design flaw that led to headgasket failure, and they used this engine and derivatives of it for decades. Besides that they are reliable.

I never really understood the reasons for putting a quad cam, water cooled flat four in a family car. I know there are packaging advantages, particularly with the 4wd system, but other manufacturers manage to do it, so it seems like you are adding a lot of moving parts for not very good reasons.

Great video, very informative. I did my own EZ30R conversion based on being inspired with one of (I think) your first with the blue Forester, using a Vipec V88. I've done the same thing (EZ30R with Vipec V88) but to my 1988 L series offroading wagon. It's a bundle of fun and flies up massive sand dunes with ease. I love the idea of flat exhaust collectors - I have raptor headers and they hang down way too low for my liking. I also have a Raptor supercharger kit ready to bolt on but man, this video makes me want to turbo it instead! I really need to get it tuned better because it's a real bastard to start and it really shouldn't be.

"The other good thing is it doesn't sound like a Volkswagen" - MOOG on suicide watch. hahaha
Interesting to watch. I've only ever seen one of these EZ30's in the flesh here in the UK. I wish Subaru was more popular over here like it is in Australia.
