Tingling and numbness are the signs of nerve compression. If neglected long enough, this can lead to permanent issues. One should have at lest 3 hand /arm positions completely different from one another when it comes to pressure distribution. Another detail, often taken for granted, is stack : reach ratio. On most modern bikes, sometimes even those falsely marketed as "touring", SR ratio is quite aggressive (way less than 1.5), meaning that, no matter how good your core muscles are, it is inevitable to put the most of the pressure on your palms. Yes, more upright position means more air resistance, but if your are not into racing (as you claim), why keeping an aggressive posture? Add bumps on the road and constant shock-absorbing by your hands, repeat this often enough and you have got a perfect storm for a repetitive strain injury. A simple step, such as installing an aero bar, ergonomic grips and adjustable seat post can make a huge difference on a extremely long ride. Take a look at the Transcontinental day one videos; aero bars, or other creative / customized handle bar solutions are wide-spread. Once one has got a choice between different positions, one has to set a reminder to change position and spend the same amount in time riding in each. You are a huge inspiration for me. Stay healthy!
My chiropractor gave me wrist stretches and also adjusted my shoulder blades that really seemed to help a lot. I would have never thought of that beforehand. However the bike suggestions are totally awesome you obviously have a great deal of bike knowledge.
I second this, I ignored wrist pain for about 1 year and a half which eventually lead to surgery for nerve decompression. Recovery is long and rarely 100%... better to check it if you notice symptoms
Hi Katie! Just wanted to let you know what an inspiration you are! You make me want to get on a plane and fly to England to try your amazing routes (the shorter ones for now of course haha!). I’m relatively new to cycling and your videos have been so helpful to me! I can’t thank you enough! ☺️
Tingles and numbness... after PBP in 2019 I lost the sensation at the tip of a few fingers for a few months. Which was fun using a keyboard! Decent padding in the gloves, more comfortable bar tap and switching positions on the bike - all helped post PBP.
I saw this video after I solved my saddle soreness this morning. I simply raised my saddle a few millimetres and bingo, comfort, on both my MTB and Road bike.
great to hear the voice of experience with all the extra things that need consideration...about to do Chase the sun 330km...done about 320 before so not too concerned about distance or time in the saddle but the idea of doing more than that or riding through the night does put me off those longer distances..
I’ve stayed at several hotels with bikes and I never even thought to ask if I could bring it in the room. It’s non-negotiable, it’s coming with me 😂 anyway great job on your amazing ride!
My penny farthing came into the rooms in 2020 for Tasmania Australia for Cradle Mountain & the National Championships, I had it on the car rack so brought a tarp indoors for her to sit on 😎
i did a ride in holland a few years back, at the end of the day there was a load of dirty bikes being taken upstairs in what I would call a good quality hotel, the next morning they all came down clean, must have been alot of mud in the shower trays overnight !
I stayed at a hotel in North Wales in 2021 which had bike racks outside covered by CCTV. When I arrived the Hotel Manager told me that she had just had another rider playing hell because she was not allowed to take her bike into her room. I told the Manager that she should have told the guest to sod off. This sort of thing gets cyclists a bad name.
Premier inn,Wetherspoon hotels and travelodge are the only true “cycle friendly “ hotels in my experience, you can take your bike to your room no questions asked.
@@reidanderson2646 no cyclist bikepacking would ever leave there bike outside, cctv or not, it’s more like the hotel owner giving the hotel business a bad name, any hotel reception telling me to sod off I would gladly do so🚴🏽♂️.
Hands tingling - redshift is my go to. Also genesis bar tape double or triple loose wrap. Hands fine for the whole APN however before my shift to redshift they got really bad.
You need the red shift stem suspension.. and ergon gp5 with flat bars… or drops with extra positions, and getter gel gloves Yup it’s carpel… now it’s started you need at get that fixed. Generally doesn’t get better on its own as such, especially if your going the same activity causing it to be numb
1:28 I had 1 or 2 month trying to evercome finger hand and feet numbness... I took one or two acupuncture therapy appointments to help me and lots of hand small therapy workouts during the day to regain control of my nerves and the force I lost.
You may want to look up cycle palsey and treatments (generally rest), especially if you find that you have lost some strength in your hand. Suffered a bit of it few months ago and accupressure massage and following the hand exercises and stretching has fixed it.
Hi Katie very good what you said yes you would be eating alot and sleeping l eat a lot every day never put weight on but l always ride my bike l like what you said a big one truck thanks take care
numbness in your hands is from the Ulnar nerve, it can get inflamed or irritated. it does go away but once i started to get it, it now happens often. you can buy gloves with extra padding in that area or use a thicker gel type bar tape.

Outstanding rides Katie. You must feel like doing something other than cycling for a bit. Must be time for a beach break, paddle boarding, hiking, yoga etc. Somebody take Katie out to a movie and a club.
Ref tingling in the hands. I had this for the first time last year after a multi day ride, I couldn’t put my fingers together for about a month after or straighten them. Turned out it was the gloves padding combined with the round bars. I’ve changed my gloves to ones with lass padding and bars that have a flat profile on top. Zero issues since.

Hi. Well done again. That chain set looks perfect. I've got a Tiagra 48/34 and it seems odd that I can't get a smaller chain ring than 34. Is there a work-around you can think of? It seems that the two rings have too much overlap. Also, can I ask a stupid question, but do you look to maintain an overall average speed? If you don't ride to power, what is the metric that you use, or is it just 'feel'? Cracking ride, but are you tempted to go for the biggies now - the ultra competitions? Last question: you were second woman home. Is that rider in your sights now? Thanks for the channel, very engaging and inclusive.
