    Hi Katie! About two weeks ago I did a solo ride across Florida and back, Clearwater to Titusville to Clearwater non stop (329.5 miles or 530 KM). I rode through the night without sleeping for two days. Oddly enough I wasn't suffering in the saddle nor was I ever tired. I was going for 400 miles but 70 miles from home at around 2AM, a cold front dropped the weather into 40's Fahrenheit. All I had to wear was my bibs and my lycra jersey and fingerless gloves. I didn't plan for that temperature, especially in late April, in Florida. I set my mind to do the ride and I almost found it easy to do. I suffered no contact point pain or sores. I have been doing some research on the mentality of an endurance rider to understand myself better. Friends and strangers thought I was crazy and most thought that I couldn't do it. TO be honest, part of what motivated was to prove them wrong. When I am in the saddle, I feel like I am in my element. Out of it is where I seem lost. Best thing though, I did it all on a whole food plant based diet plus coffee. 7 year Vegan here! You inspired me to ride longer and longer distances. Looking forward to the next big crazy thing you do, so I can copy you.🚲🚴‍♀️🚵‍♀️🤪

      great story! I'm getting my first road bike tomorrow (Trek emonda SL5) to change my hybrid Giant rapid and I'm yet to ride my bike for 100 kms (can't talk in miles, don't know about them); I think I'll start with 50 k and then increase by 10 k every week. Vegan from southern France here! also inspired by Katie's videos but I feel like a beginner.

      Wow.... I have been wanting to a coast to coast ride. How much of the cross Florida network were you able to use? I have no clue how you did coast to coast to coast incredible.

    • @dsarcevic
      @dsarcevic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomsmith3982 I think about 75% of the ride was on bike paths or trails. Some good and some bad. In the last few years the trails have improved across the state, building paths on former rail lines. I'm still trying to understand my mindset on doing extremely long endurance rides. I decide to do it and the mental aspect doesn't seem that hard. As a Marine veteran, I love to challenge myself and see how far I can push my limits. I have become more attuned my hydration and my nutrition. When I am on the bike, I am so happy and carefree. I have found my passion for life with cycling and becoming a Vegan. Two of the best choices that I have made in my life for the better!

    Great tips on the mental side. It can translate over into ultra running too. We eat every hour, plus on the hills know where the streams are to refill & I usually divide the route into sections so we're only ever thinking about the next checkpoint.

      Did my first 300 by accident. Took my loaded touring bike 130k away, and wanted to sleep there for a overnighter. I went easy the whole time. But I was at my destination way too early. So I took a detour heading back, so I wouldn't have too much left the next day. But I kept going and wasn't satisfied until I came back home. It wasn't a success though, because I wanted to camp!

    Hello Katie KooKaburra,
    Thank you for being an inspiration to women. I wish I had the motivation to ride even when I don't have company. Unfortunately I had a stroke 10 years ago and because of that I have not been able to resume my previous physical form. But I have done several Granfondos (Audax) and the hardest so far has been to do the Serra Da Estrela - 106 km with accumulated 2086 meters. I hope you continue to inspire women like me. Thank you very much. Carla Sofia (Oporto, Portugal)

    Much of long-distance riding certainly mental. I think it's probably quite helpful to many people to know that everyone has a struggle at some time, so thanks for pointing that out for the riders doubting themselves.
    I'm glad you mentioned dates. I've been trying to come up with a joke, like "How about a date?" Just joshing with you! Here's my point. What are you doing on May 2nd? Some of my favorite musicians are going to be in your Manchester on the evening of the 2nd. They are called Larkin Poe, after their great, great, great grandfather Larkin Poe, a cousin of Edgar Allan Poe. They have a TH-cam channel, too, so check them out, and maybe you'll want to go to their show. I wish they were coming somewhere near me, but no such luck.

    Super tips as usual. London was the worst part of my 300K ride to London. Get some tri-bars. I'm not an expert but I feel they give you another position for those long rides so take the load off you hands/back.

  • @Markhypnosis1
    @Markhypnosis1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tri bars are definitely not over the top. I use them now, and wish I had them on the first 200 mile ride I did last summer. Not only do they allow for different positions, but the aero position saves energy too. I've seen quite a few ultra endurance riders with them. I love mine. Can't wait for my next 200 miler with them.

      @@KatieKookaburra I just got a cheapy £20 pair off Facebook marketplace. If your bars are narrow then get some that are separate so you can adjust the width. You should have plenty of space on the outside of your normal bars if you get some with the smaller elbow pads.
      Yep it does take I while to get used to, I nearly came off on my first attempt. It's bloomin scary to begin with but now I'm speeding round corners with them 😐😂., and they feel so normal now. They helped me knock 7 mins off a 50 mile TT route I do, taking me from 19.5 mph average to 21mph.

    G'day, Katie! Fantastic ride and great video! When you mentioned eating dates, it sparked my interest, because I love them but rarely bought them, because the Aussie ones are just SO expensive. However, recently I decided to try dates from Turkey - and they are DEEELISHUS!! I have carried a couple on my puny rides but I'll carry more, if and when I start doing something longer than 35 ks.

      You need to update your Garmin or get in contact with them. I have a 830 and it lasts for hours, at least eight. Also, check the brightness settings. If you are riding in the light, you can turn down the brightness to the place wear the screen is barely visible.

    I'm trying a 300 again this summer. Had to stop last year because of the heatwave in July. Bit nervous but feel like I can do it. Would you say it's vital to get in at least a 200 before I go for 300 or would even a 250 be needed before trying the 300? Hard to find the time!
