Some day soon, "Game of Thrones" will be a distant memory...
And "A Song of Ice and Fire" will be released as an animated series anew...
And the prophecy will be fulfilled.
it could happen for sure
We will see. I am hoping for a reboot for live action but that would be a huge amount of pressure for HBO.
Ok, on a more serious note (fun bubble memes aside:). Dany's story is the most compelling in the books. All of her titles and her story as a whole depict a Phoenix rising from the ashes; reborn to make the world anew as this is Phoenix symbolism. She is the hero of the story, the fiery or "light" side of Azor Ahai/The Prince that was Promised, and that is earned throughout her arc. This video masterfully explains why, and it is so beautifully done. Streamy Award worthy content on this channel. Truly.

I love how her dragons are named in honor of the three men of her past who had to die for her to claim her place as rightful heir: her husband and two older brothers, their sacrifices now weapons for her to wield.
That fits with the magic requiring a steep price and the Faceless Men charging similar for their services. Maybe the FM are more in tune with magic than we have been led to believe...
@@ThommyofThenn The Price of Power is one of the strongest themes in ASOIAF IMHO - and the way that it's often the innocent who must pay so that the powerful can keep or increase their power.
Except she doesnt have that claim, which is the big twist of the whole narrative. How Dany handles that will be the ultimate decider of her fate in this story.
@@Midgert89dany does have that claim faegon is a blackfaire amd jon by westsros rules would still be a basterd so dany really is the only true Targaryen hier , and and even if she wasn't we already know dany doesn't really want or care about the iron throne and would much prefer to live a simple life .
@@thatoneblackdude3333 Faegon will likely never be revealed to be anything. Dany will suspect it, but the narrative only really remains interesting if we don't get a final answer. Anything else really cheapens the overall narrative and is way too convenient for Dany from GRRM.
We also don't know if Jon is a bastard. Again GRRM wants to take away the thing that matters most to Danys person, as he does to many characters, and that thing is going to be the iron throne. Jon being trueborn does that, as does aegon just by virtue of existing. Aegon exists exclusively as a foil to Daenerys in this story. Mark my words.

Something that stood out for me in my most recent reread of the series is all the times Dany has very blatant “life giving fire” imagery in just casual descriptors. The one that stood out the most to me was during one of her arguments with the Jorah where the line was something along “He had gone cold, but she had enough fire for both of them”. And it HIT me hard just how heavy her Azor Ahai themes really are

Just started the video, so I don't know what will all be said, but I made a bet with my partner that Daenerys would make an appearance in HotD, somehow, over two years ago, just before S1 aired. And finally seeing Dany in Daemon's vision gave me chills. The way she raises her upper body in the vision is very similar to the way Dany raises her upper body when she looks up at Ser Jorah after the hatching, and I loved that attention to detail.
she is the main character of the story after all
@@xeronix9774 A bastard has more chapters than "the main character" lol
The Weirnet has given you a great vision
@@xeronix9774i know some folk will insist other people are the main character for various readons, but i think she is the most important to the crux of the story. Some could argue Jon Snow is but I think with all the prophecies (ambiguous but they still align with her the most probably) , sweepingly epic, huge events and magical occurences it's objectively true she is.
But that doesn't mean half the fun doesn't come from trying to view other characters through the 'main character lens' to see what stuff adds up or not.

@@Woofydoof630 Isn't it Tyrion with the most chapters? But either way this story doesn't have 1 MC. It has 2 main ones. Daenerys & Jon.
I think the way Daenerys is written it is very easy to fall in love with her. And I think a lot of people in the fandom are in fact in love with her in an interesting way. I wonder what that means for the whole story, haven’t made up my mind about it yet.

@@DavidLightbringer Same, which is why I love Robert lol
Some people call it simping but I don't see it that way, and it's insulting to how good George has written Dany. Falling in love with her. I am very much attracted to women, but I can't say that I have the hots for Dany, but I do love her which is interesting. She is like a messiah, like a religious leader that many people look up to.
I am now of the mind that all of the Valyrian Gods were Dragons, and R'hllor, the "Lord of Light," is, in fact, "The Last Dragon."
I believe that he was what the Valyrian's were keeping at bay beneath the 14 Flames, with their mages spells. And when those mages were slain, R'hllor awoke, and Valyria was doomed for keeping him prisoner and harnessing his power.
So like ONE lone Dragon like a lovecraftian nightmare?

And when the Valyrian's began tunneling and mining into the Earth, they came across its offspring, smaller Dragons. I'm fairly confident there have been Legends and Mythos of Creatures with cities and even worlds carried on their back before, and it feels like something George might take inspiration from.
We even see "Giant Turtles" being depicted during Tyrions voyage on the Shy Maid, in A Dance with Dragons.

Thank you for being such a champion of Daenerys & her fans. I recall the people on reddit back in the mid 2010s claiming she would go mad "as evidenced by " Dany X ADWD. I never understood how folks got that from the reading. Then, the disastrous end of GoT, it made me realize even the showrunners didnt understand. There is no way GRRM is so nihilistic as DnD, and it will not end that way for her. I believe shes AA, also.
Her being AA is way too obvious. WE all know it's not that obvious. I think she's the best candidate, but not the one. I personally think it's Jon. Not to mention, on this channel, he believes AA is actually evil. Which means he believes Dany is evil.

i've seen fans claim that Daenerys' story in both the books and the show is supposed to mirror Paul Atreides' story, at least the character in the first two Dune books or Villeneuve's Dune (not getting into "the golden path" or whatever in the later books that retroactively justifies Paul's actions) as this false messianic figure who only took advantage of an already established & manufactured religious narrative to further their political agenda, because GRRM has said in the past that Dune is an influence in ASOIAF...
And to me, what makes Daenerys in the books an actually revolutionary character, is the fact that she constantly tries to dismantle the systemic forms in place which allows slavery to persist in the first place. Her actions were never as simple as just killing slave owners and then freeing the slaves, but she also tries to figure out how that freedom can continue to take root as the new order. Of course we know that her campaigns in Astapor and Yunkai eventually failed, and she was forced to make concessions to former slave owning nobles in Meereen, and then there's even the son of the harpies stuff. But as you pointed out, GRRM admire people and loves writing characters that tries their best to make positive changes.
People claiming dany is like Paul are just idiots who recently watched the movie and try to force similarities between the two as to rationalize season 8, heres the bottom line Paul was never a hero that was the whole point of his character he was a subversion of a hero, dany is not a subversion of a hero well she is but not in the way that she isn't a hero the point of Danys subversion is that shes a woman the subversion with her is that the hero everyone is looking for is actually a little girl not some abled bodied man waving around a sword everyone expects that , nobody expects some teenage girl that's the twist .
Yea I really don’t think George wants us to take away the lesson that freeing slaves is pointless and feudalism is fine if you just have the right king. Like what’s the point of most of the books if not to show the brutality and evils of feudal society and empires built on slavery?
George is known for creating very complex characters, show just reallly watered them all down and made them into conventional heroes and villains , who says azor ahai cant be evil
@@jamesquinn6662 my profile picture is completely illrelavent and it's not anime , how does me saying Paul isn't a hero mean I don't understand dune? He wasn't this is a objective fact , a person who fights to free slaves isn't a hero ? You have a strange understanding of what heros are .
How about you come up with a argument instead of trying to insult me jackass.
In Heretics of Dune, Odrade often mentions some variation of "take what you want and pay for it", and we see how the Honoured Matres take and take and take but never think about the cost/consequences. I see a lot of Dune (or at least Frank's books) in ASOIAF
Dany tearing down the slave trade that her family surely benefited from at some point with her dragons is the sanest thing a Targaryen has done since they got the eff out of Valyria.

aww thanks that's a very nice thing to say
Found you on a lot of old videos from 2 years ago. So glad you are still making stuff. I eat up this lore for breakfast
Being a general book nerd I grew up on Dune. I read through the first three ASOIAF novels before law school (2017-8), got side tracked by… law school, and now I’m re-reading through (currently on SoS) the series to the current state of completion. I also read all the supplementary history/pseudo-narrative books (WoIaF, FaB, etc.). This in mind I’m a Dune nerd: I re-read last year through God Emperor of Dune. David- I really think you should consider a video on the influences Dune had on ASOIAF. The parallels, especially through the histories, the family trees, the nuanced Targaryen genealogy, the foreshadowed inverted hero’s-journey of several PoV characters. There is heavy foreshadowing that Targaryens are breeding with intent to create the Prince that was Promised/ fulfill Aegon’s Dream. What GRRM has done: subtly weaving in the Herbert, is extraordinary in its scale over so many works- it’s all coming together. Jon and Danaerys are both Kwisatz Haderach. I believe one, possibly both, will tragically become like Paul Atriedes m, a monster, and possibly Alia, and Abomination (GRRMs usage of the term abomination in the ADWD prelude is almost CERTAINLY a nod to Dune- I’m interested to see how Bran (although as of now stated impossible) warging into someone like Jon, Dany, or Euron could create an apocalyptic abomination, or if Bran will become the Leto II abomination: ruling with an iron fist, paralyzed in condition, prescience, genetic memory, and omniscience for millennia. Bran has already shown all of these abilities/traits, even dominating Hodor with his will. (There’s also a subplot(s) of possibly marrying Paul to his sister Alia, and similarly his son Leto II and his sister Ghanima to consolidate power and continue the Kwisatz Haderach bloodline which reeks of creating the Azor Ahai). David, I think you’re brilliant and have the recipe together. The Lovecraft; the Tolkien; the real-world mythos, the History. I think Herbert is a key missing element. Importantly, GRRMs early work ‘A Song for Lys’ consists of plot elements, which are almost all directly pulled from Dune. I’d love to chat more about the influence sometime (I also speculate that the weiwood paste and Shade of the Evening are functional analogues of the Water of Life)- I’ll be a joining the Patreon soon!
Man, I like some of Hill's takes but everything Targaryen falls into hater territory.
For example, she does good analysis about power relations between the noblemen, the noblewomen and the common folk but when it comes to the Greens, she excuses their motives as "oh this is just what a nobleperson would do". Like, come on, aren't we criticizing this kind of stuff? Why excuse some of these actions just because they are perpetrated against a family/clan "I" hate?
Yes I can only respectfully disagree in the strongest terms
Yea shes definitely blinded by her bias for Targaryens .
That Hill's Alive call out!🤣 Well deserved in my opinion. Her takes frustrate me to no end. One of the things that ticked me off the most was where she said that Daenerys is perfectly fine with innocent people suffering because she thinks to herself watching the lamb men's village being ravaged by the Dothraki: "this is war. This is what it looks like. This is the price of the Iron Throne". That actively made me mad because that's purposefully taking that line out of context and turning it into something entirely different. Those are not her real opinions. It's a fake hardness she tries to put on because she is HORRIFIED by what she's seeing. And this hardness lasts like 10 seconds tops before it breaks and she goes full "i will not have these people harmed" mode.
Like Seriously, I remember watching her Dany video last year and relieving she removed parts of the paragraph that contradicted her point. Definition of Bad Faith.
a channel called Phoenix ashes made a video called hills alive has no idea what she's talking about and I watched it today. immensely gratifying
David’s videos are literally like comfort food, no matter what it’ll make me happy.
David has the best videos, ESPECIALLY when it comes to Dany! Chef's kiss!
And just to add to the corrupted weirwood tree thing, GRRM wrote the lore for Elden Ring. This includes the recent Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, where the Erdtree, the symbol of all life (growing from the primordial Crucible, the first vestiges of life) has a corrupted, shadowed version called the Scadutree (pronounced shadow-tree). One tree representing life, while another is shadowed and decaying, representing death. It isn't an exact 1:1, but I think it adds to the idea. :)
definitely comes from a similar place, yeah

Always love your fashion, clothing and theory wise.
I recently discovered your channel. You reinvigorated my interest in ASOIAF. I love the literary analysis and mythical astronomy. Your theory that Dany uses a glass candle to see Asshai is interesting. I think that Quiathe is giving clear instructions to visit Asshai. Maybe she’ll learn sorcery there or how to control more dragons. Maybe how to forge dragonbonds so she can get 2 more riders? I’ve thought that she goes South and East to reach Westeros by circumnavigating the globe. Then her first battle in Westeros could be at Casterly Rock or Lannisport, or maybe even Oldtown. Why else would GRRM tell us about the Seasnake Corlys Velaryon seeing Elissa Farmon’s ship in the Asshai harbor? Other ships that go from Westeros probably don’t make it with survivors because of the inhospitable shadow lands East of Asshai and West of Westeros.
Thank you for this! Top quality content, truly the best in the fandom!!

It's important to see stuff like this as i've noticed that my mental image of a place or castle is very much too small for how its actually described.
You can tell the artist read about every detail of Dragonstone and let them truly inform fhe work
totally agree
The 'salt and smoke' likely symbolizes Daenerys's tears (salt) and the smoke from Drogo's funeral pyre. This interpretation is supported by the phrase 'the dragons prove it,' which connects these elements.
I mean I could See Danny being seen as a villain by some of the people, such as bringing her dragons to Westeros. Then challenging Faegon who might be liked at the time. Also she could do something that triggers wildfire to go off and makes her look like a villain, but I don’t think she will be a true villain.
This will be good for refreshing azor ahai Daenerys connections. Her with Jon and Euron are in my opinion definitely the prince that was promised and all will be dragon riders. I really can't imagine the main series never having a dragon battle.
I also absolutely can't wait for your green men video. I have a theory based on a detail in what we know about green men that I have never seen anyone question or talk about.
This detail even heavily connects green men to some minor but still important enough elden ring lore, that I am sure George mentioned it at some point in his lore document for elden ring and is his idea.

In the dune canon Paul sees some of the horrors and is willing to commit genocide in his lifetime but he is jaded after that experience and doesn’t look into the deep future, but his son does and he does what’s necessary but horrible on a scale of generations not years. I propose that John and dany will know they are going to cause a lot of death but tree wizard bran will be necessary to sort out the root problem even though it will involve a complete loss of humanity and horrific immortality

Neat, but I do think that "The other was a nightmare" 26:02 Refers to her other dream where she was Rhaegar. Dany IX AGOT specifically.
"The door loomed before her, the red door, so close, so close, the hall was a blur around her, the cold receding behind. And now the stone was gone and she flew across the Dothraki sea, high and higher, the green rippling beneath, and all that lived and breathed fled in terror from the shadow of her wings. She could smell home, she could see it, there, just beyond that door, green fields and great stone houses and arms to keep her warm, there. She threw open the door.
“…the dragon…”
And saw her brother Rhaegar, mounted on a stallion as black as his armor. Fire glimmered red through the narrow eye slit of his helm. “The last dragon,” Ser Jorah’s voice whispered faintly. “The last, the last.” Dany lifted his polished black visor. The face within was her own."
I think the idea of Azor Ahai, TPTWP, The Last Hero as more than one person IS the right answer. I think GRRM tells us this thru a quote from Marwyn the Mage:
"Gorghan of Old Ghis once wrote that a prophecy is like a treacherous woman. She takes your member in her mouth, and you moan with the pleasure of it and think, how sweet, how fine, how good this is... and then her teeth snap shut and your moans turn to screams. That is the nature of prophecy, said Gorghan. Prophecy will bite your prick off every time."
It's fun to troll about it being one person or the other but Gorghan (GRRM) is explicitly saying what we think it is probably isn't what it actually is.
Stannis have elements of TPTWP or The Las Hero or even Theon Greyjoy and Jamie Lanniser.

D&D could’ve written a corrupted Dany, in early seasons we see her doing bad things when she feels justified - ie burning the woman she “saves” for killing her husband while failing to realize Dany caused the pillaging. She did have an ego and flaws but she was not written to be someone who kills innocents en masse.

Brilliant video. Thanks David,
Always seated for quality Daenerys content!
Whoo, early on this one! Thanks much for all the great videos ^.^
Can I just say your description of Dany birthing her dragons via Khal Drogo's funeral pyre corresponding to the' Azor Ahai cracked the moon ' Dothraki legend is freaking AWESOME and you just blew my mind!! I've always known the blood magic, Mirri's sacrifice by Dany also helped that along, but I never made that connection to the Dothraki Legend. I agree, Daenerys is 💯 going to save Westeros, she IS Azor Ahai reborn.
I praised Garth before I began this video and then you went and dropped my favorite comedy troup ever - Monty Python's Flying Circus - and I appreciate you even more, now! I had a rabbit named Sir Tim, cuz irony!😂😂😂 He was a ferocious beast with huge teeth😉😁❤️
I forgot the Spanish Inquisition sketch have that bit about the red uniforms, it was perfect
and yeah the layered myth at the dragon hatching was one of the discoveries that started my whole channel!
It's nice to see some actual lore to back up theories. It's also nice to see at least one person not acting like "freefolk" on a certain Stark-worshipping platform.
After watching your video to the end I am surprised that you mentioned Aphrodite and Venus, but you didn't mention Ishtar.
Ishtar on top of being the original form of aphrodite and having her morning star symbolism, she also is the goddess of love, sex, war, justice, motherhood and political power.
Many of her myths are also connected to dragons and her having wings connects to Daenerys being able to fly on her dragon.
Her descent to the underworld and from it connects to daenerys falling into and rising from poverty.
I know that people can always find some older versions of the same god, but in my opinion Ishtar has even more obvious symbolism to Daenerys than Venus and deserves being mentioned.
yeah i could do a whole episode on that stuff, i almost didn't even include the last section because the video is almost an hour. I touched on some of that in the Vedic Dany video, but I really need to come back to it
@@DavidLightbringer I think that a series based on less known mythology inspirations in asoiaf could be a good idea.
Stuff like norse mythology and Jon being inspired by Surtr, a black fire guardian between worlds that ends the ragnarok with fire sword and humanity surviving by hiding in a magical tree is obvious, but I have never heard other people talking about Daenerys being inspired by Venus.
Can't wait for your green men video and opinion on the depiction in hotd.
I'm so happy to be here at the beginning of one of your next Daeneras essays/videos.
I Stand With Daenerys
If the books ever come out this story will be amongst the most epic ever created.
I love this little nook of the fandom. Thank you David, we appreciate you.
I'm really glad I found your channel. I love your in-depth videos.
Yay! It’s finally here!!! 🎉
This needs to be viewed by everyone! Pumped for the john video 👏👏

If you want my opinion as to why they are focusing Dany in that House of the Dragon scene my honest opinion is that Season 8 is going to be retconned. Zaslov the head of Warner Discovery has expressed serious interest in undoing the major franchise damage that was Season 8 and thus what is likely happening is that they are building up to that by regaining some degree of fan trust and then being able to retcon it in a satisfactory and reasonable way, its not going to really piss off the hardcore fans as Season 8 pissed them off myself included. So my thoughts are that a retcon is likely to happen in the near future, especially since if HBO and Discovery want to make bank long-term they need to undo Season 8 because no matter how many spin-offs they make its not going to be as satisfying if people know exactly where its leading to, so undoing Season 8's worst aspects is needed.
As for the books who knows the ultimate fate, if you want my opinion as to why Winds and Dream are taking so long its because that after the fiasco that was Season 8 I'm convinced George rewrote his plans and Winds from the ground up call my opinion what you will but I think he is concerned about long-term legacy. But also I think there is a good standard for a setting Martin has created in part that honestly merits some analyzing as it may have some implications for ASOIAF story wise and that is Elden Ring, you see Elden Ring has a lot of the core elements that ASOIAF has a world in chaos with a bygone history of past ages shrouded in legend, currently in chaos, a lot of symbolism applies but also the thing is the game despite having a fairly dark setting has a number of endings for you as the player and two of which are actually good endings that are as happy as you can get in the setting those being the Age of Stars and the Golden Order Ending both are what I would consider bittersweet endings mainly because at the end of it all you still have to go thru and defeat a lot of enemies meet plenty of tragic characters along the way and it does require a lot.
I mean though the core element is the ending of ASOIAF is intended to be bittersweet, similar to the Lord of the Rings, I'll note that for such an ending you don't need main characters like Jon and Dany to die permanently, in the Lord of the Rings Frodo and Aragorn who are easily the main characters survive to the end of the story and live out their lives, that however is balanced by the fact neither can return to the lives before the story and they still lost plenty of people along the way, Frodo had the Shire he grew up in ruined by Saruman while he was away and while the damage was able to be repaired there is no returning to the Shire of his youth in fact he wasn't even able to stay in Middle-Earth and had to leave to go to Valinor. Aragon likewise cannot return to being a Ranger of the wilds he is now a King but also he lost a number of his kinsmen during the Battle of Pellenor Fields the Grey Company of 30 stalwart Dunadain Rangers came south to fight for their Lord yet few of them survived to see the end of the war and many fell including their captain Halbarad in the fields before the Rammas Echor. The point being is that even if both Jon and Dany survive the story as do any number of characters there is no returning to the way things were before no returning to Winterfell with Ned, no undoing the deaths of the fallen and even then rebuilding is going to be hard and long.
Point being that at the end of it all you can have a bittersweet ending without killing your main characters off.
"regaining some degree of fan trust"...
Septa Rhaenyra and Alicent's Death of a character send their regards......
@@LuMoRo34 Two failures back to back will wake any company up, especially if the writers are that incompetent and especially with how much money that has already been lost due to bad decisions. As for HOTD I refused to watch after I figured out they were just going to ignore the timeline and alter things in such a way as to make zero sense, but the character assassination is on the writers and producers not the upper management in charge of the company.
I know I'm a few months late to this comment, but there has been a Game of Thrones movie(s) confirmed. I wonder if this is the route they'll be taking? I dare not hope, though.
Your work is incredible
Excellent video always love your Dany content since she is my favorite!
