Re the chilly weather, my memory may be playing tricks, but down here in southern England, I think the last few springs have been relatively chilly and slow to get going. Some milder weather due this week though.
After the Esk Reservoir I stayed on the farm road and lanes leading to Slateford and Balerno. Before you started, it had rained for weeks and so much of the track was ankle deep in mud that I took respite where I could. Thankfully the next sections were much better than the borders area.
Did you say there was some mud?? Carry plastic shopping bags and put them over your shoes and tie on with some scrap bungy cord. I walked the Thames Path (notorious for flooding in winter) with a friend and we only had one bag between us - so had to hop across the swamps one at a time and pass the bag back on the end of the hiking poles. Endless fun!! 🤪

West Edinburgh is a long way from leith 🇱🇻😃🇱🇻 tho the Water of leith does run right through the City centre of Edinburgh all the way down to the Shore at leith
