At age 73 and with arthritis issues in both hands I am finding it more difficult to play my long scale basses and have switched over to short scales and I'm finding that I really enjoy them. I have already acquired a nice collection of both solid and hollow body short scales. This base has been on my radar but I haven't really taken the plunge yet but I think I may have to do that soon after listening to your great review thanks for posting it.
Very nice Ed. Glad you took out the foam for the back half. Been interested in this bass since announcement. And just picked up an L1000. So there's some inevitability here.
Played the launch edition at SNAMM last year. Such a great bass with way too few demos. This, the Wattplower, and Serek Midwestern are the best short scales I've played. As a guitarist/bassist, I'm pleased the short scale market is getting more crowded. Thanks for all the great content, Ed!
I’ve got my Tangerine Fullerton Deluxe Fallout on its way as I write … should be here on Thursday. This review played a big part in me pulling the trigger. So thanks a lot!
Great review. That bass sounds awesome. Especially with the tone rolled all off, getting goose bumps. I would love to see you review the Serek Midwestern as well. How would you compare it?
G&L should take this format and add a 30" 6 string neck (a la Fender Bass VI) and call it the Fallout Bass VI. I know Leo Fender was working on something like this on his bench right before he died. It would be nice if the string spacing was a little wider than the Bass VI though. Just an idea. G&L, are you listening?
Hopefully at some point the pickguard design team at G&L will rise to the challenge. In the meantime, fans of Jane Jetson, Bewitched, and 60's women's hairstyles in general must be thrilled.
I just picked one up. I’m a guitar player, so I’ve never really had a legit bass. My only bass before this, was an Ibanez x-series. This sounds way better.
Concern as I almost always use a pick! Otherwise this Bass looks amazing!! I assumed since the pickup is in the middle, I wouldn't hit the pickups while picking and muting. The toggle switch is great!! I like less knobs. It's G & L !! My other choice was the Music Man Sterling Stingray Short Scale, but I like the pickup position, bridge and toggle switch on the G & L. Hopefully this bass will allow me to get some tasty Chris Squire sounds.
@@mikespringer2659 Yes. It is amazing. The recorded tones are great. Works great with a pick. Only drawbacks for me are it's a bit heavy and long (for a short scale), and Drop D is a little flabby. But short scales are notorious for Drop D challenges. Overall, it's a phenomenal Bass.
@@geoffreymerrifield5666 Nice! Thanks for the reply. Did you get the tribute, or go with the America made version? I'm seeing a lot of reviews that make it seem the quality difference maybe isn't enough to warrant the price difference and I'm trying to decide whether to go tribute or American made.
@@mikespringer2659 Tribute. Have to share my limited funds with Studio gear, guitar, drums, keys, vocal stuff. Never tried the American version. I bought a Sterling Stingray Short Scale $599 at the same time, and chose the G&L. Wanted to love the Sterling, cause it's lighter and smaller, but it just didn't have the feel, power and tone of the G&L.
Your tone sounds SO good on this bass with the foam in place. What kind of foam do you use for that? Love all your playing here, this has me looking for a Fallout bass now.
Thanks! I love this bass. The foam… is just random stuff I find. The dark gray stuff is from packaging, the blue and yellow stuff are scraps from the craft store. It’s about finding a density and softness that works for you.
They are similarly set up, but the 30 vs. 34 scale is a significant difference. Also, the L1000 has the B/T boost tone controls like the L2000, the Fallout is just a single tone pot... I prefer the B/T personally. That would be the only mod I'd do, but the jack would have to go on the side.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but do you need shorter scale strings on a 30" bass? Or can you use the same strings as on a 34" scale bass? Sounds great by the way, and that slap tone is just killer.
Not a stupid question at all! Yes, you do need short scale strings for 30". A standard length string will have the silk too far up to wrap around the post.
Is that one of the G&L Tribute models? The USA versions that I’ve seen have a goofy looking racing stripe on the lower bout. Not a fan. I’d love to hear your take on the new USA Sting Ray short scale bass that recently came out.
i know that bass line at the beginning... isn't that the line foley was playing on the gig with the chris dave trio and zhenya strigalev on sax? or is it from somewhere else?
I love G&l and own two basses. Both of them needed shims which was really annoying. I like low, modern action and a fast motown style like you. Did your Fallout Bass need a shim? Leo designed those super tall saddles with a micro tilt in tandem. They removed the micro tilt but kept those super tall saddles. Consequently, if the board is sanded even a little underset, you're in shim town. Some G&L's don't need it and some do. I get unlucky. What about you?
This bass, and most of the G&Ls I've played in recent years didn't need shims, but then I don't go for super low action. Now, virtually every Fender I've ever owned needed a shim.
@@BassWhispererTV yes I do set up pretty low. like .010'' relief and 4/64th-3/64th for bass. I have a similar playing style to you. It's crazy how fast and fluid you can be with medium action. I feel like I need it low to keep it smooth and fast but then again I've only been seriously playing for a couple years. Funny I've only had one or two Fenders that needed shims. The saddles are so short the board would have to be sanded SUPER underset to need a shim on a Fender. I know their QC is all over the map depending on the year though. I guess I got really unlucky with my Saddle locks. Thanks for the reply!
I am looking for a Short-scale Bass. I've narrowed it down to 3 choices: G&L, Fender Mustang PJ or the Music Man Sterling Sting-ray. Any input from someone who familiar with all 3 ?
i know that the toggle switch on the mustang pj has rather low quality, i played it and it kinda sounded like a p bass, maybe a LITTLE bit muddier but that's all i know
Well, I'm VERY partial to the Fallout, it's a beast! The Mustangs are nice, but I'm not a fan of those pickups. Haven't tried the short scale MM, sounds intriguing.
It's an early production model, they'll be offered in a short while, same bass as the current intro version with the racing stripes... but they were out of those. I like the pink!
Bass Whisperer TV I agree the pink is one of shell pink looking retro fender colors. The racing strip isn’t my favorite I know it’s a mustang look but GL doesn’t need to go that route :)
They can do both with and without the stripe. I’m hoping to see a candy apple red with the stripe and even more, I’m hoping to see it offered with the old school head stock.
just convinced a friend to buy one after reading/hearing lots of good things about those... might have been a mistake because I already know that I´m gonna be jealous that I didn´t get one myself 😂
After watching your videos and ended up buying the tribute version as my first short scale and I love it! Thanks for the awesome video review it definitely helped with my decision. What gauge of Daddario chromes do you use on it?
Fine sound. G&L should make a "wunkay edition", with mahogany body, ebony board, and bass/treble/volume controls, 3-way toggle. Lots more sounds, ability to fine-tune both bass and treble, which is really useful. And lose the racing stripes-- not a great intro feature there, those are pretty ugly (opinion) plus have a "kids' bass", "less than pro" vibe. Selling this bass way short.
Well, I think they just wanted it to be simpler. I do prefer the 1K-style eq, but I'd probably go with Series instead of OMG. I like OMG, but Series is not that much different to my ear, and no single-coil hum.
@@BassWhispererTV When my Wunkay was new in '81 I had a Country (old school even then) gig.
