    Firstly congratulations on the channel. At first I thought you were nuts with the lobster claw thing but quickly realised your reviews are fair and balanced and your clear passion for the bass won me over. Great work.
    I recently bought the Fallout bass after reading your review and realising the design choices with ergonomics felt like it was almost made for me. I cannot use my pinky on my fretting hand due to a childhood injury and although i can manage full scale on my L-2000 with small hand movements to compensate for long fret stretches, it does limit my playing. I had dismissed short scale but decided to give the Fallout Tribute a try and it just instantly felt right. I have not put it down since and being 6’3’ and 300 pounds the larger body and bridge spacing makes me feel like i am playing a full scale bass whilst being easier to play, with the added bonus being I don’t look like a circus bear playing a ukulele!
    Now i admit large middle aged men with dodgy pinkies isn’t exactly a huge market 😂 but the fact the Fallout exists and just happens to be made by my beloved G&L just blows me away.
    As players we are truly spoiled for choice in today’s market. Apologies for the long ramble!

      Loved your "ramble." I have small hands but can't stand the 1.5" nut width on most short scale basses. I do much better on this one at 1.625" and my Hofner Club bass at 1.653". Geddy Lee, McCartney, and all the stuff we in cover bands have to play. So much easier. And, as one of those large middle-aged men, the 3.5 pound Club bass is great on those long gigs. I use the G&L for recording.

    Glad you reviewed this one. If not for your video I would never have known that a short scale bass was available in a full sized package. Honestly, the main reason I don't play short scale basses is that at 6'2", 190Lbs, it looks-- and feels-- like I'm playing a child's toy. Now I'm looking forward to giving the Fallout a try. Thanks Lobster!

    This is my next bass. It’s a beautiful sounding instrument. I just watched a review of this and he changed the strings to flats. Oh my goodness, it sounded so incredible. I love flatwound strings, and I have always changed out the strings on all of my guitars to flats. Personally, I think Leo’s pup design attributes to this bass guitar’s awesome sound. Lobster, change out the strings on this to flats, then come back and do another review. I think you will agree on how awesome this bass truly is.

    I’m not a tall guy by any means (169cm) but it’s genius that they proportioned this to look like a standard 34” scale bass. IME with shorter basses (Fender Mustang and even the Ibanez EHB), I get more cramped or strained trying to play those. Kudos to G&L for this design and especially with that MFD pickup. Lots of options for a passive!

    Long time guitar player here who got into bass 4 years ago. I started out with a Sterling full scale (a great bass, especially for the money). A year ago I picked up one of these in black and it’s been my #1 ever since. I prefer the tone of OMG mode when performing but yes, it does have a tendency to get “boomy” when I turn *my* amp past 3. Plays great, looks great, sounds great.

    I love these MFD pickups, both in sound and design. If I ever get my hands on one of these or an L-1000 i’ll probably raise the magnets under the E and A strings on the rear bank of magnets, and then raise the magnets under the D & G strings on the front bank of magnets for a sort of reverse P bass sound.

    Hey Lobster, I love your videos. They're thorough, accurate, interesting, and the right balance between talking and playing. Thanks for what you do. I do have one small suggestion though. Neck dive is an important issue to some people, and just saying it "might have some neck dive when standing" is kind of leaving us hanging. Why not just choose what you consider an average strap, slip it one the bass, then stand up and check the balance? It would take maybe a minute, and be great information. In any case, thanks for doing these videos!

      I second this! I've had to give up on so many otherwise great basses because of neck heaviness. (FWIW I always checked to see if I could reduce weight with hipshot ultralites first, but it was never enough to keep the neck from stressing my shoulder.)

      @jkf9167 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ironically, I like the sound of the short scale, but not the easier fingering. I have to learn songs on a full-size bass or I won't finger them correctly. Then, when I play in my band, I play a Mustang. And yes it looks like a toy on my tall frame, and also makes me look fat, but it sounds right.

  • @MrSparks54

    I love my Fallout Tribute, absolutely the best bass in it's price range in my opinion. Mine is white with black pickguard. I'm not sure how you are measuring the length, my Fallout is about an inch longer than my MIJ Mustang bass and at least an inch shorter than my Aerodyne. It does everything I want it to do tone wise. I have smaller hands and it is as comfortable as any 1.5 inch neck I've played, the profile is a bit flatter than the Mustang which is a vintage C shape and 1.5 inch. Anyone who is hesitant should play it. Thanks Lobster

    • @jackdempsey9644
      @jackdempsey9644 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because of the headstock. Scale and length are two different things and the same thing all in one. A typical bass guitar is 34 inch scale like a precision or jazz bass, most short scale bases are 30 inch scale like a mustang and like the Fallout. A Serek midwestern is 30.5 inch scale. This one like Lobster says has a long headstock making it longer than most short scales basses.

    Great review, great shirt, and I look forward to the stingray/fallout shoot out. I was super surprised you gave this bass a 4 claws out of 5. Been looking at purchasing this bass for months now but I always did wonder why this bass looked bigger than normal short scales. By the way have you looked at the Ashdown bass called “The Grail”? They have a normal scale and short scale version. Maybe that can be another cool bass for a future review? Either way keep up the great work you’re doing good sir!

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Naes! I had a hard time scoring this bass. As an import copy/version of the USA Fallout, this bass is excellent quality. Hardware, electronics, build, and finish are all very much above average. The ergonomic qualms I had with the instrument would be the same ones with the USA ones where the design originates. From the perspective of being a import model/copy, this is a stellar bass and a great value. It also definitely achieves what it set out to (as does the USA one) in terms of providing a quality, large, short scale bass.
      The grail looks sweet! Those were designed in conjunction with Dan Lakin too. I definitely want to check out more of those Ashdowns.
      Thank you for the encouragement :)

    I am primarily a short-scale player, and when I tried out the launch edition at Summer NAMM 2019, I didn't notice any ergonomic issues. In fact, the Fallout ergonomics make a lot of sense to certain players. Some people hate that short scales usually have tiny bodies-really wish the Stingray in particular had a full-sized body. This is a short scale that (mostly) feels like a short scale but won't look like a toy on stage. Also, if you play more in the middle/higher parts of the neck, this will be more comfortable-my Mustang PJ can get a little cramped high up. I also didn't feel like the first fret was very far away, which I noticed on the Reverend Dub King.

    I'm a short guy looking for short scale basses because it suits my hands, but most of them look like toys. I love my Mustang with P/J pickups and flats. I like my Sterling Stingray HH but hate active electronics (I'm heavy handed). I wish this was in HH or Humbucker and single coil, but that one pickup does work. Also interested in the Sterling Stingray short scale.
    I just like pickups near the neck since my hand gravitates there. I also do like to have a bridge pickup for bite when I want it. I'm kinda particular. I also prefer a Jazz bass neck, but this is an original design and sounds nice. Definitely gonna consider it.

    I know the neck position, even though this is a short scale, seems weird, but I think it's brilliant. When I play short scales, the frets are closer to each other, which is comfortable, but this bass doesn't suffer from the entire fretboard feeling too small (too close to my body ) like other short scales. I really like it.

    Thanks! I'm really looking forward to the Sterling/G&L comparison.
    BTW... I really struggled playing with a pick for a good while, I was doing the same thing you appear to be doing, and that is holding the pick too close to the point and also holding it a little too tight. When you practice, try holding the pick more in the center and loosen your grip a little bit, I think after you get used to it you'll find it more comfortable and you'll have better control.

    While I did pick up the squier mustang as a short scale I do have a tribute deluxe asat guitar. I play both guitar and bass and the asat deluxe has a wide neck which is very comfortable for me personally. If you're a bass player looking for a guitar I'd say check the asat deluxe out.

      Try a G&l L2000. It has mfd pickups in the bridge and pbass position, the same controls as the fallout. In addition to a three way pickup selector and a third switch for passive, active, or active with treble boost. And finally volume, and passive bass and treble knobs (so you would start with them full, and can roll off as needed. I understand it can get very close to a p bass, j bass and Stingray sound.

    About the size, once tried one of those, it felt more because this one is based on the mustang bass if anything that it is that long. The mustang bass also have a bridge away from the lower end of the bass...but in a way, as the mustang was a student model, an advenced neck position might be a good thing for student so when switching to a 34 inch model they already can reach those low notes, just a guess.

Although many people like small, light short-scale basses I guess that isn’t the case for everybody. Gotta say I really like the sound of this bass and it seems like it belongs in your hands.

      Eh, I think that stuff about short scales is super exaggerated. There's so many different types of short scales, and though some definitely suffer from a really muddy not defined sound (Epiphone EB-0, lookin at you!), but basses like this, the Sire U5, and Stingray Short Scale are great sounding and playing.

    • @StagnantExistance

      @@LowEndLobster according to their promotional videos, the screw kind of presses saddles against each other and the bridge becomes a solid resonating unit, resulting in better sustain and tighter low end. 0:00 LOL yesterday I learned the early model G&L tribute were built in Japan and there have been recent builds there as well. I just found out so I still haven't picked up many threads yet to nail it down more but well, I guess if I really like Japan built instruments and honestly, the BRIDGE on the hardtail and basses is something I need to try because it's the end of the Leo's basically lifelong feature development cycle. Oh, they also sell random parts on their website but I get the feeling it's just NOS stuff and not exactly production at this point (you can literally buy G&L BODIES and NECKS).
    Would it be weird to want a Tribute 5? lol
    I've been waiting for this because I know we're going to hear more detail than I've heard in other 2-6 min demos, it's clocking in at 21 min so it should be interesting.
    This is also another quasi-atypical bass so I also expect to have some hairs to slice on some tonal things. There are...little...differences, once I started down that rabbithole a while back (the Burgundy Mist double P Matador doesn't seem to be on Reverb anymore, I hope someone is playing the shit out of it in a bar somewhere, just because, THUMP and BOOM) and most of the EB/MM instruments except of course classic Sabres, et al, went off the table since I probably can't just buy BOTH and I think the Japan factories are going to come up with more refined versions as well as maybe some new or improved features now that Leo is gone and the shop videos are nice but nobody is Leo, so...you know...at least they're still working on cool things, especially in Leo's memory and trying to help people understand just how much work that guy actually put in, and for how many years, and through what types of business madness we know pretty much all companies still surviving today have gone through. If you want to look at it a different way, there are at least 4 factories/brands building designs that Leo himself worked on at one point in time, for that company/team/spinoff.

      6:10 OMG mode is one pickup coil (I haven't figured out which one yet) has the treb filter/bleed cap across it so you get sort of a series single/bucker but if that's true then you're inverting the noise 3x which means that you are still gonna get some weird noise artifacts since you were able to common mode reject one and a half times.
      Apparently it's a well known tone trick along with about 1000 other well known tone tricks I need to learn - but Leo, like Hartley, just went FUCK IT and stuck it in there and said *I'm not explaining it, you just get a switch that does something* (Hartley did this by *removing* a switch, he put the S/H split into the tone knob at 7 instead of letting the player decide if they want to ICEPICK the audience - he left it on the T-40 but the T-60 changed into the T-25).
      So now I am unsure what's exactly going on with the single pickup models tho...it's probably a series mode with the cap across one coil is my guess and that's why it's not noisy AF like some people say OMG mode is on other models.
      I have shit to do...dammit. I need to get this finished. I just fell down like an HOUR rabbithole and just now backed out of it to finish the comment after I had found the coil/cap trick. *facepalm*
      I am getting pretty close to getting the bench up - my physical therapy facilities here are near a breakthrough, I might be able to use them in a week or few and, of course, I'll stream the physical therapy stuff too. I've had a company set up that deals with regenerative medicine for like a couple years now lol (superdroid1 on linked in if anyone cares about part of my history, although the part where I helped birth 4G is there)
