    I loved this game as a kid,literally haven’t played it in like 15 years but I still can hear the music from the 1st cave perfectly ( didn’t have a memory card back in the day so I got really familiar with the 1st cave and the town right after)

  • @evange_2577
    @evange_2577 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Like you said, the subverted expectations of the starting town seems like it could have been a really great opportunity to get the player invested in the story and genuinely want revenge on the antagonist for killing the characters they had grown attached too. It seems like the game had a lot of cool ideas between this and the crafting system, but it ends up falling flat due to poor mechanics and unnecessary/bad voice acting. Overall great review, thanks for talking about the OST, I'll have to check it out in full sometime.

    To each there own. I hated this game due to everything mentioned in this video. I was cursed with this game as a Christmas gift as a kid, so I completed it out of sheer spite. You did miss a couple areas, one of which is impossible to find without a guide, which is honestly one of the only semi fun areas in the game, with a secret boss. Located at the very beginning of the game, only accessible once you make a light or dark based spell (which by the way, one shots every mob in the game including the final boss soulus) and you back track tothe beach you got off the boat at, and walk the other way. There's a door you use thespell on, and the dungeon is nearly the size of the rest of the game. The rewards are the ultimate magic sword which beefs up your magic Stat, and a fist weapon called kaiserknuckles, which doesn't let you cast magic, but allows you to one hit the final boss by punching the infant in the face.

    I replayed this in 2019 after first completing it in 2010 and I have to say it still feels like a slow-paced fever dream. I've seen reviews where people absolutely rip into it for being so barren and downright boring, but the more you progress throughout it you definitely get the impression it was always meant to be like that from an artistic standpoint. Even the music reflects the experience - it's not a game for the impatient.
    Speaking of which, that was always the best part for me - definitely one of my favourite game OSTs. I almost snapped up a physical copy a while back but sadly the price is just too ridiculous now. Good job finding that interview with one of the composers too. Another composer, Chase Bethea, did a short but effective analysis of a couple of the tracks and he really drew attention to the highlights of it, look it up if you're interested.
    By the way, the guy who's looking at those gems is actually the acting-Captain and eventually turns into that angel-demon who you also encounter later on in the game. But the thing that really escaped me the first time round was that the guy sleeping, the proper Captain, actually turns into the werewolf boss you fight after everything gets burnt down (which you can deduce if you talk to the Healer, she says he started thrashing around at one point and injured or killed someone in the process). There're numerous details like this throughout the game which completely bypassed me on my first playthrough which gave me a newfound appreciation for it. The developers certainly knew what they were after but sadly it's been superseded by newer games. The only reason people still know about Eternal Ring is because either they're digging into the history of From Software or the PS2 itself, or they still own the actual game from when they initially got it with the console.

    I know it has flaws, but I love the system of "make your own magic"
    I have played through with every attribute, the support rings are much better than you would think (if you focus on a single element) and there are even support rings that improve your sword's damage. So technically you could do a sword run (which I will now try lol) also the earth heal, healing water, and purify spells remove the need for healing items making you only need to focus on items that replenish MP.

    Something i oddly noticed: The manual seems to not exist on the interwebs which is unfortunate due to how annoying the creation of rings is.
    Also there is one ring not in the us version.. the ring of move it lets you go faster.. they literally took out the ability to go faster in exchange for scavenger hunt for more rings(insight replaced move.)

    • @WREPS2GOG
      @WREPS2GOG  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I've had a lot of trouble getting copies of the manual to look at for a lot of these games.
      The movement ring sounds sick, wish they could've found a way to incorporate both!

  • @gungy_vt
    @gungy_vt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    LYLA BabyRage
    Also, small correction on ring creation: the Left side does decide the element, but the Right side decides if a Magic Ring is "Offensive" or "Support". You used "support" to describe Attribute rings, but it more accurately describes rings such as "Earth Heal" or "Unpoison". The color of the right side determines this based on Offensive = Fire, Wind, Light; Support = Water, Earth, Dark. The level of magic of the ring created is based on the total gem level used in the recipe, with ranges 2-5, 8-11, 14-16, 19+ for the 4 tiers of spell strength. And it's good to note that the rings give you stat boosts, just for wearing them, and those stats affect both your offense and defense for that type of damage, so literally fight Fire with Fire.
    Of course, none of this is explained in-game and that adds both mystery and disappointment as you either research how to make rings or randomly try gem combinations. Great video, really nice to see people notice Eternal Ring's existence. It's definitely a game with its flaws, but it can be enjoyable to play regardless (especially if you find the bad VA to be hilarious). Emulator definitely feels clunky, but it's also on PS4 (for NA) and they made it feel a good bit better to play.

    • @WREPS2GOG
      @WREPS2GOG  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I mostly switched to calling them support rings for ease of scriptwriting, it probably wasn't the most apt way to describe them.
      Thanks for these corrections though, it's definitely useful for people passing by :)

    • @gungy_vt
      @gungy_vt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WREPS2GOG No problem at all, there's basically no official guide or manual for any of this stuff, so it's all made-up anyways. I just want to clear up any possible confusion people could end up with for ring creation, because it's really never explained anywhere aside from a poorly worded gamefaqs post from 2001 and in the game's speedrunning Discord.

    A possible mechanic i found but, you know how you complained about the fact that the day night cycle does nothing aside from swapping npcs and locking you out of houses, well it seems there are certain things attached to time of day having to do with elements it's possibly a mechanic that either weakens or buffs certain spells but on the pause menu it mentions time of *element here* it's likely a time of day thing that buffs specific elements. And may have to do with that get to the village before nightfall that guy said at the start of the game.
    because i noticed that at nightfall water seems to be buffed and you start at time of fire.
    and the enemies within seem to drop a lot of water gems possibly implying an alignment with the water element the opposing one to fire.
    if my speculation is correct then i may have found something actually new in a game for once.
    Actually looking into it, it seems the time of day applies to the element system entirely so the time of day you start a dungeon could actually help if you are skilled in using specific elements or enemies you are fighting oppose it. I.e time of fire, fire spells are buffed fire enemies are buffed water spells are weakened and water enemies are weakened
    That nightfall comment at the start of the game is accurate it's hinting towards a mechanic nobody would notice it seems.

    I know this vid is like a year old but at 12:00 when you are talking about needing a guide to find out how to make the rings, that is because the game came with a manual that explained how it worked. And you know the 10 year old me didn't read the manual either. I think this choice was made based on saving space on the cd or time related issues.
    Also at 14:35 I think that is an emulation error.

    • @WREPS2GOG
      @WREPS2GOG  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure, this was definitely during a time when I was realizing how important the user manual was to the experience for a lot of these titles.

    i wish the modern souls games made magic a more viable playstyle. you never have enough charges/mana/ammo to make ranged attacks viable 80% of the time

    If you're gonna play this game I'd recommend using a guide, there's some fun to be had with other rings that you really never get a glimpse of if you're playing blind. Also the optional dungeon found at the beginning of the game has some actual challenge to it and the reward is the Moonlight Sword which is a FromSoft staple

    • @MrOrdosan
      @MrOrdosan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      always loved how this game is like...4-5 hours if you play through..but 90% on your first blind playthrough you gonna end up lost in that EX forest for longer than the game itself,lol.

      yes but if you grind there it takes away all challenge from the game cuz enemies there drop items that increase stats pretty good reward for practically going out of your way to do things.

      @@WREPS2GOG if you liked demon and dark souls you will feel at home with kings field 4. You have an interconnected world with shortcuts everywhere, replenishing health vials, crestfallen warrior in the begining and many more similar beats. The combat gets much more fluid as you level a few stats and favor low weight weapons.
      Shadow tower is recomended too if you want more after that.

      @@WREPS2GOG Eternal ring is probably a bad game because they probably had a troubled development coupled with getting used to the new console. But the level design is plain lazy and abysmal. Kf4 has the best level design out of all pre ps3 from software games and it even has no loading screens.
