Find out the pros and cons of the West Highland Terrier below:
    Pros:
    Hypoallergenic, ideal for allergy sufferers.
    Minimal shedding and low drooling.
    Family-friendly pet.
    Easy to train and housebreak.
    Cons:
    Prone to weight gain.
Doesn't like to be left alone, could develop separation anxiety.
Stubborn, not ideal for first-time owners.
    High grooming maintenance.
    Westie Overview:
The West Highland Terrier is well known for its small stature, striking white coat, and adorable little face!
Hailing from Scotland, these dogs have assisted both nobility and the working class with their vermin-killing skills.
Although cute, this breed still belongs to the Terrier family and ideally, requires an experienced owner.
Courageous and brave, this pooch may be small but they certainly aren't quiet.
They'll let you know exactly how they feel through their barking.
Westies are deeply affectionate towards their owners and could develop separation anxiety if left alone for long periods.
Yet despite this, the breed does appreciate their own space every once in a while.
Tough and resilient, Westies were raised in the Scottish Highlands and have the stamina to work all day.
Due to this, the Westie does have high exercise needs.
As a result, an active owner will be required.
Westies excel in dog sports such as agility, earth dog trials, flyball, and rally.
These sports will mentally stimulate a dog.
Westies are an adaptable breed that can happily move home to a new location.
All that matters is that they're by their owner's side!
This breed can live contently in both rural, city, and suburban environments.
A Westie puppy may need some getting used to around loud sounds in a city environment.
Now it's time to go over what to expect if you were to own a West Highland Terrier.

There are no cons about having a Westie. I have raised Westies for many years. It’s all about how you train them. ❤️💜

Mine just passed at 14. They are independent, brave, peace keeping, affectionate and loyal dogs that are exceptionally unique. But they are also fraught with many genetic health issues that require lots of managing, especially as they age. I strongly recommend pet health insurance if you do choose this breed. But they are such a joy overall.

Carla, outstanding comment. My Westie just passed at age 15. For the 1st 11 years, there were no issues whatsoever, but after 11, I cannot begin to tell you the thousands of dollars I spent on his health care. I'm convinced that the good Lord makes Westies as cute as they are so that you can deal with the healthcare money flying out of your wallet!😁

We lost our westie Tallulah Star at 16 and a half. Tommorow will be our 1 year anniversary. She loved good restaurants, beach bars, adventures. She travelled all over Europe, went through 4 passports. Charmed bavarian vesper riding gangs, cross old French ladies, village bullys ( Wookey if your reading this you know who you are!) She was amazing, smart, tough, resilient utterly charming & totally loved! We miss you Tallulah! Xxxxx

With a Westie, you'll never go to the bathroom in peace again. But you'll always be entertained.
My Zoey (just turned 16) loves kids, loves food, has separation anxiety, forces her love on people (even my grandmother loved her, and Grandma wasn't crazy about dogs) and other animals, gets extremely jealous if our neighbor is paying attention to another dog, and is basically a community celebrity.

My Westie, Tommy, died at 16 a few hours ago. He would have lived longer, but... cancer... he had a removal surgery and two months later there was another tumor and it increased in size so rapidly... Eventually I will get another Westie, I only have good memories of him and I'll love him forever, and I can't imagine myself owning any other breed. Only PROs from me.

    • @jamiecloud1897
      @jamiecloud1897 ปีที่แล้ว

First of all, let me say how sincerely sorry I am that you lost Tommy! I know how devastating that is, as I just lost my Westie 3 weeks ago. It has left me shattered, but I will rebuild my life without him and eventually get another dog. He too, had cancer, and he had tumor removal surgery. CT scan showed no other cancer in the body, yet 2 months later, he got a huge tumor in the spine, and it seemed like the cancer raced all throughout his body. I wonder if, in giving them the surgeries, hastened their demise because of the exposure to oxygen? I guess we'll never know. I hope you get that Westie because I think I'm going to get another 1 or 2 as well. Take care, and I hope you are doing better.🙂

A westie was my first dog and while I'd definitely change some things I have nothing but incredible memories. I hope to get another some day as they are amazing! Great video and very accurate! I'd also add that many Westies can make friends with other species of animals as well so if you have lots of pets they probably will fit right in.

Other than walking your Westie daily, sit in the shade, drink beer and toss him a ball. Just be careful he doesn’t over do it, especially in the heat. I’m on my second Westie and neither one has dug. Westies are especially fun and affectionate little dogs.

my 2nd westie recently died aged almost 11 of cancer of the spleen
she was the most placid little one going
    loved my young grandchildren
she would walk every day for miles
always told me when it was bed time lol
she was never a barker ,never chased squirrels only when very young
she used to play with my daughter's pet rabbit
never had any other health issues only that very last day she died did we find out she had cancer of her spleen
she was my shadow and always wanted to be close to me
she was brilliant off lead and hardly never wore one in her whole life
she really was a sweet girl who never caused me any concern around other dogs
I miss my beautiful girl every day 😢😢💔

My little Westie Joey passed away on my sister's birthday we had him for 13 years and he was the best boy we've ever had and I'll always miss him and he did love life to the most with that sparkle in his eye he always had a skip in his step as well whenever we took him out on walk it's actually really good with small animals he bathes quick friends with the rabbits while he was still around and he helped out the cats when they're kittens never harming them he also kept the chicken safe when he was still around and when we still had chickens

My parents took in a passed family member's westie. Old man had an old dog and all they ever did was sit in the house and play ball. The dog will play ball all day and will bark if you decide you're done before him, and also is kind of a terror with how he'll try to take on any animal, including a *goddamn horse*

By the way, Westies can be trained to minimize their barking. I trained my Westie so well by simply saying "no bark!!" in a very firm, stern voice whenever he was barking. It took him a little bit of time, but eventually caught on that "no bark!!" meant to pipe down. I trained him with lots of training treats. The only time that he would ever bark is if he had to go outside to go potty or if there was a stranger around that he heard.

I'm currently dog sitting a Westie...a 1 yr old puppy. Outside is a challenge. There is an opposum under the deck and this little guy is barking, digging, clawing up the ground to get to it. Highly fixated on it and prey driven. There has been very little training and i am not a dog owner. Sweet fella...but it's a challenge for sure. Not sure what to do!

Sheding is not minimal if you feed various inaproriate food.. and when sick, its probably first sign for my westie-she starts to shed when something is wrong with health.
And avtivity: I have two: one is super active, other one, royal lady enjoying slow life:))

I worked at a vet office and there were some issues with allergies for Westies, leading to skin and chronic digestive problems. Can be challenging to find a compatible diet.

    • @Chrisamic
      @Chrisamic ปีที่แล้ว

As a Westie owner, I can say the answer to diet is 100% raw species appropriate food. Our first Westie was on cortizone to treat his skin conditions but it got worse and worse until I was desparate to find the solution as it getting really bad (red oozing skin with the hair falling out) and he wasn't even 2 years old. After feeding raw for six weeks the problem was solved completely. I've had three Westies now, all raw fed and zero skin problems. Raw feeding is a little controversial in some vet circles, but fortunately all the vets I've been to have been supportive. I do have some definite ideas what the problem is with packaged foods.

My cousin in cali has had a Westie for about 7 years now his name is Winston however he does get aggressive sort of easily if touched a lot but other than that he seemed pretty chill the last time I saw him so I really feel it would be cool to have this type of dog like my cousin has because if I were to bring him or her he or she would get to have a little play date with Winston but of course that would depend if a hotel would allow dogs and of course if he or she would be able to come me or someone I know would have to keep the two westies behaviors in check because it’s important they don’t become aggressive with each other
