Very nice, Ask Leo! First-time viewer, an instant fan. I was having trouble extending the C partition on a drive I had just copied....no 3rd party software would do it, because...no idea. Then I tried turning of encryption on the C partition and Viola! All was rainbows again. cheers.
Thanks Leo i will turn bit locker off on my 2 laptops, as it did kick in on one new laptop and stopped me in my tracks, one laptop has the encryption key printed but not turned bit locker off just yet so will get to work now
SO I have had to restore my HD FOUR times in 7 months because I keep getting this BS! I just did what you said and it is not present. I am using W11 home. I saw on the internet that Bitlocker is not available on Windows Home. Well according to my system I have W11 home and I have feeling it is still turned on even though it doesn't show up in the way you show here. I don't even see the option to turn it on.
@wxmyjnsn I found it under a different name..in settings and there was an option to turn device encryption off..thankfully that was it. Cheers for reply.
Hello Leo. Thank you for this video. Very articulate. On another note, I'm currently experiencing a lot difficulties trying to remove Bitlocker from an external hard drive. I'm using Windows 7 and I have never set up any Bitlocker pass code, for the Maxtor external hard drive, which I'm trying to fix. Would you be able to help please? Cheers.
No, I cannot. Without the recovery code or BitLocker password for the encryption you may not be able to regain access. That's kinda the point of the encryption.
Control panel\all control panel items\ device encryption....only shows a " backup your recovery key" i am using a win 11 home and single language edition(OEM).i saved the bitlocker key to my MS account....but i did not find the option to turn off bitlocker. To decrypt c drive I followed the path> control panel> privacy n security> drive encryption > toggled to 'off'....waited till completion of the decryptipn.went back to 'this pc ' and found the' lock' removed..ie decrypted... Bitlocker is a hindrance in my case ,where noone else uses the machine...
Can I ask you a question Leo, or anyone who can help? I had to transfer pics from my camera to my work laptop and had to encrypt the camera. I now have to use a password to use it on both work and personal laptops, and the camera is showing 'card full' when I try to use it to take pics. When I right-click on D-drive when I connect the camera, there is no mention of Bitlocker. Your video suggests that there is no Bitlocker on the drive if it doesn't show as an item on the right-click menu, yet it appears on the pop-up asking me for a password. Please can someone help me get my camera back, and remove bitlocker!?
Always good ... but, question ... I WANT THE DATA TO BE UNENCRIPTED ... I am not dealing with TOP SECRET information ... I want it plain text and easy to access! Help!
That's kind of the point of BitLocker - encrypted for security. If you don't have the keys, then you can't turn it off. Check yoru Microsoft account online in case the keys were stored there automatically: askleo.com/find-your-lost-bitlocker-recovery-key-in-your-microsoft-account/
Things change. What was good last year might not be good this year or next. Best of luck to everybody that uses a computer or cell phone. You are a modern slave.
Really, you first advise people to turn BitLocker off and on again just to get the key? Insanity! There is an option to backup the recovery key ... which you even mention yourself at the END of your video!!! Sure, if you don't need it, turn it off, but turning it off and on just to get the key is CRAZY TALK!
I have a external 8TB hard drive. when I click on "All Control Panel Items > Bit Locker Drive Encryption > Turn off Bit Locker ...... doesn't work. It gives an error message. Bitlocker Drive Encryption // The Parameter is incorrect. I tried some other way in PowerShell with these commands manage-bde -status Disable-BitLocker -MountPoint "F:" still I get error message as follows Disable-BitLocker : Value does not fall within the expected range. At line:1 char:1 + Disable-BitLocker -MountPoint "F:" + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [Write-Error], ArgumentException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : System.ArgumentException,Disable-BitLocke
Particularly if it’s been turned on without your knowledge.
Was time that someone explained the Problem. Good Video

resizing partitions is really annoying with bitlocker on! Thank you very much!
Great Dutch surname!! "Nut Tree". Kudos from the Netherlands.
Would you know why bitlocker would keep coming back up every time I load up my pc

@@Docdoherty13 I did not, I changed my BL security key and it has not happened again. Sorry I can't be more help, I know how frustrating it is.

So, turn off Bitlocker?
Does it need to be turned on?
It's not required, no. But whole-disk encryption can be a valuable security measure.
my D: and E: disk drive has been locked with bitlocker and it must input some key also i cant turn off the bitlocker :( help

You only turn it back on if you want it encrypted, otherwise you keep it off.
