The manage-bde command is a preventative measure to make sure you have a copy of your key *before* you get locked out. If you're already locked out of your drive it won't work and you will need to use one of the other methods in the video to find your key.
@@flixhyper1491 if your drive is unlocked and you still don't see a password then it's possible your drive was encrypted without creating a recovery key. You ought to be able to create one of your own with "manage-bde -protectors -add C: -rp", replacing C with the appropriate drive letter.

Just wanted to support the pro tech show because nothing else worked for me and this man explained things beautifully! He got this bitlocker screen and had no idea what to do cause of course Microsoft doesn’t prepare you for these occurrences. Anyway, I was able to use this video to solve the issue and recover his key from the MS account as instructed within minutes so thank you from me and my father.
It's called "learning". If you fail to understand how you ended up with a problem, you are doomed to repeat it; therefore I explain what the root cause is and how to avoid/manage it. If you can't be bothered with the learning part I put the timestamps in the video so you can skip directly to the part you want. I don't force you to watch any of it. If you can't be bothered learning and you can't be bothered reading the description and you can't be bothered using the built-in chapters... it's kind of on you at that point.

I spent hours trying to open my laptop and it told me there was no recovery key with my account, unbeknownst to me an old college microsoft account I used on my laptop before had the recovery key. I saw several videos in order to bypass this route it's a route, but unfortunately none of them were as helpful as your video was. You are a legend. For Azure, if you lose the key and it was not backed up, the microsoft link won't work. The only other thing you can do is try to use the recovery key ID to find the key itself in Azure under a different serial number. This is not well understood by Azure support and requires multiple levels of support if it is indeed possible. The lesson learned here is that encryption is a double edged sword. If you don't back up the key and you get this screen, you may as well throw the machine in the river, you aren't getting in.
Not so fast. There is software that can retrieve the recovery key, not always, but often. Several forensic software. And there is PC-3000 Data Extractor device that can discover it. Finally, you can crack the Bitlocker password, but not the key.
I had no BitLocker enabled before. This happened after I connected my old laptop SSD to a new Laptop with TPM2.0. I could login two times without blue screen. I noticed BitLocker icon on my drive but didn’t care much as the padlock was open. In the third time it gave this blue screen. Nothing worked, no key was in the Microsoft account as well. When restoring hardware configuration (Disk Drives) I tried removing the laptop battery and tried putting back the HDDs and it did work!! I could login without entering any key

Very useful! Some time ago I was helping my dad recover from the same issue - and luckily I had printed the recovery key when I first set up the device for him. But while troubleshooting I first learned about Microsoft backing up the key to the cloud. And I was speechless, it was kind of a surprise to learn that the key to your precious and private data is stored at some big tech datacenter automatically. But seeing how BitLocker is used in the coorporate setting, then it actually makes sense. Great video as always! Keep it up :)
My initial reaction was similar - how dare they assume I want them to take a copy of the key to my data and store it in a MS account! Then I realised that by default on a home PC anyone with access to the MS account could just log into the computer anyway so it's kind of moot. Still feels like they ought to ask... or at least tell you upfront.

I have watched so many videos today in an attempt to get into my computer without my BitLocker key (that I didn't know I had) but your's was the first to suggest going into a SCHOOL account to check for a key. My computer was working nominal the other day, and here we are, scrambling on TH-cam to figure it out, along with many others, in the same exact timeframe. Fantastic help. Having found that the key for my laptop was not stored on my microsoft account and being close to wiping all my data i found this clip and after one last restart the Bitlocker screen magically disappeared and I was able to locate the key and make a note of it for future reference. Something of a relief.

Useful infor but didnt work. Command prompt doesnt give me the passcode just the ID. Microsoft keeps sending me to a wrong url when trying to get from site and I cant use Azure because its a personal account. This happened after it upgraded to windows 11 on its own.....how I despise windows 11. Makes windows vista seem like the brst OR

I got this screen a couple of weeks ago, which was just a week after I purchased my desktop for my business. I managed to follow the instructions on the screen to find my key and had no issues getting back in. Now today I have this same screen and repeated the steps to get my key but my microsoft account is saying I don't have a key. Now I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?
Excellent explanation, well done. Quick comment - Windows 10/11 only automatically turns on BitLocker if you sign in with your work or school, or personal Microsoft account. So, if the customer signs in with a local account it won't automatically activate BitLocker. The customer can manually turn it on, of course, in the Manage BitLocker tool. I happen to think BitLocker is a good thing, of course, for the reasons you clearly laid out at the beginning of your video. :-)
Thanks. There seem to be other scenarios where it gets enabled as well. Although they say it doesn't get enabled automatically for local accounts, I have observed it getting enabled automatically when using local accounts where a Microsoft account was subsequently added within the Windows user profile (i.e. saved in the settings app for logging in to applications, but not used to log in to Windows itself). I haven't tested it, but I assume the addition of the Microsoft account within the local user profile was the trigger in that case. Given how difficult they're making it to sign in to Home edition devices running 11 without a Microsoft account I think it's going to become difficult to avoid! Personally, I always ensure BitLocker enabled; but most people don't know it even exists and MS could do a much better job of warning them. There have been quite a few people who have messaged me about second-hand devices where they have no idea whose account the key was stored in. A popup any time a new user signs in to explain that the drive is unencrypted and they need to keep a copy of the key somewhere would avoid a lot of problems.

Sir i purchased a laptop, its windows 11. I never came across this bit locker and all that, and i don't remember the product key either...... (as he seller said it all is linked to your Microsoft account).... My laptop is working fine but from last two weeks i see a popup message whenever i start my computer, it says " there is an issue with trusted platform module (tpm) data. Press (Y) - reset whole tpm Press (N) - boot with current tpm data Note: bitlocker may require the recovery key to boot to windows. SIR I AM FED UP WITH THIS, i press N every time to get access, it works But i need to get this bitlocker key, which i cant find even after doing all the methods that you mentioned...... It seems Microsoft pushed out an update that has triggered BitLocker on a lot of devices. Presumably they made a change that affected the boot measurements and the TPM doesn't trust it.

It was a company in the US. Not a big one that you'd likely have heard of and mostly consumer-focused I think. I clashed with their owner online. They argued very aggressively that BitLocker doesn't exist on Home edition so when this screen appears it's due to a known Windows bug that accidently encrypts everything without storing the key and there's no way to recover. I think it was ignorance rather than malice as the Home edition thing was true prior to Windows 10 (although the bug is nonsense), but they claimed that their company has dealt with this issue hundreds of times which is really quite concerning! I pointed the person having trouble towards their Microsoft account for the key and this guy got really angry about it. Maybe because he saw a revenue stream disappear, maybe he just realised he'd screwed up on hundreds of customers - not really sure. I sent him a link to the MS documentation and left him to his tantrum.

I tried everything and none of them worked. Every time I tried to log into the account I needed the page would come up as unresponsive on all of the devices I used. It wont even let me link the device to the account that's on it. Can anyone tell me what to do. I have no way so far to even attempt in getting my data off of my laptop.
It's a stab in the dark, but if the website isn't working you could try accessing it using the browser's' Incognito/InPrivate mode to rule out caching/cookie problems - particularly if the device is normally used with another account.

I haven't made one, but if you search for a video about installing Windows from a USB drive there should be plenty out there. You can turn a USB drive into installation media by using the media creation tool from Microsoft here: www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download
Thankfully, I had the key saved but didn't realized that the key was 48 caracters long! It would be very useful to know that the blue screen will show you the "Recovery Key ID" which is alphanumeric. The key is only numbers, 48 of them😂
If you can't revert a change, you don't have the recovery key, and you've forgotten the login details for your accounts as well... then you don't have many options left. If you have a backup of the system, restoring that is the best bet. If you don't have a backup, either: you're probably looking at reinstalling Windows and losing anything on the drive.

I think I've come across that before... log in to onedrive.live.com/ using the same account. If you haven't used your OneDrive in a while it can enter a frozen state and this prevents you retrieving BitLocker keys. You should get prompted to unfreeze it after logging in.
I understood the first option, where something foreign or different might be in the system during startup and I realized my external SSD was connected to my pc, so I shut it down, removed the hard drive and then restarted it and everything was back to normal

Microsoft need to be better in this area. It is very difficult for layman to fix this issue. This may be good enough warning to shift to linux.

Watched your video and was able to locate my key through the Microsoft account. I had to enter the key twice before it came on. When it did come on, it was installing updates. As soon as the updates installed, my computer came on like always. Thank you so much!

Very useful! Some time ago I was helping my dad recover from the same issue - and luckily I had printed the recovery key when I first set up the device for him. But while troubleshooting I first learned about Microsoft backing up the key to the cloud. And I was speechless, it was kind of a surprise to learn that the key to your precious and private data is stored at some big tech datacenter automatically. But seeing how BitLocker is used in the coorporate setting, then it actually makes sense.

My initial reaction was similar - how dare they assume I want them to take a copy of the key to my data and store it in a MS account! Then I realised that by default on a home PC anyone with access to the MS account could just log into the computer anyway so it's kind of moot. Still feels like they ought to ask... or at least tell you upfront.

I have watched so many videos today in an attempt to get into my computer without my BitLocker key (that I didn't know I had) but your's was the first to suggest going into a SCHOOL account to check for a key. That was it!
I have been attempting to troubleshoot this issue on and off for the last 6 months and not had gotten anywhere. My computer was working nominal the other day, and here we are, scrambling on TH-cam to figure it out, along with many others, in the same exact timeframe. How many people are going to be forced to go out and buy new computers because they claim there’s no issue. Everyone I’m talking to is stating that this happened with their work computers or school. I used mine for school and only school. Let’s hope I can figure it out. I do not have time for this. I hate Microsoft so bad. This was the last straw. Most likely will be moving to Mac…once I can.😔
Fantastic help. Having found that the key for my laptop was not stored on my microsoft account and being close to wiping all my data i found this clip and after one last restart the Bitlocker screen magically disappeared and I was able to locate the key and make a note of it for future reference. Something of a relief.

Didn’t watch any videos, but was able to use Ubuntu to unlock my windows drive.
I got this screen a couple of weeks ago, which was just a week after I purchased my desktop for my business. I managed to follow the instructions on the screen to find my key and had no issues getting back in. Now today I have this same screen and repeated the steps to get my key but my microsoft account is saying I don't have a key. Now I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?
Excellent explanation, well done. Quick comment - Windows 10/11 only automatically turns on BitLocker if you sign in with your work or school, or personal Microsoft account. So, if the customer signs in with a local account it won't automatically activate BitLocker. The customer can manually turn it on, of course, in the Manage BitLocker tool. I happen to think BitLocker is a good thing, of course, for the reasons you clearly laid out at the beginning of your video. :-)
Thanks. There seem to be other scenarios where it gets enabled as well. Although they say it doesn't get enabled automatically for local accounts, I have observed it getting enabled automatically when using local accounts where a Microsoft account was subsequently added within the Windows user profile (i.e. saved in the settings app for logging in to applications, but not used to log in to Windows itself). I haven't tested it, but I assume the addition of the Microsoft account within the local user profile was the trigger in that case.
Given how difficult they're making it to sign in to Home edition devices running 11 without a Microsoft account I think it's going to become difficult to avoid! Personally, I always ensure BitLocker enabled; but most people don't know it even exists and MS could do a much better job of warning them. There have been quite a few people who have messaged me about second-hand devices where they have no idea whose account the key was stored in. A popup any time a new user signs in to explain that the drive is unencrypted and they need to keep a copy of the key somewhere would avoid a lot of problems.
Thank you. The last one worked for me. Now if I could only remove this Gorilla Glued on rubber strip to get to the hidden screw I'd be in good shape. Never had this problem before. You just got another sub.

Those are all of the automatic ones. If none of these work then unless you have made a note of it somewhere I'm afraid you're probably out of luck.

Sir i purchased a laptop, its windows 11. I never came across this bit locker and all that, and i don't remember the product key either...... (as he seller said it all is linked to your Microsoft account).... My laptop is working fine but from last two weeks i see a popup message whenever i start my computer, it says " there is an issue with trusted platform module (tpm) data.
Press (Y) - reset whole tpm
Press (N) - boot with current tpm data
Note: bitlocker may require the recovery key to boot to windows.
SIR I AM FED UP WITH THIS, i press N every time to get access, it works But i need to get this bitlocker key, which i cant find even after doing all the methods that you mentioned......

Holy cow. No clue what activated that bitlocker nightmare but thanks to you my laptop didn't have to fly from the third floor. And why is it always so hard to find information on your account.
It seems Microsoft pushed out an update that has triggered BitLocker on a lot of devices. Presumably they made a change that affected the boot measurements and the TPM doesn't trust it.

It was a company in the US. Not a big one that you'd likely have heard of and mostly consumer-focused I think. I clashed with their owner online. They argued very aggressively that BitLocker doesn't exist on Home edition so when this screen appears it's due to a known Windows bug that accidently encrypts everything without storing the key and there's no way to recover. I think it was ignorance rather than malice as the Home edition thing was true prior to Windows 10 (although the bug is nonsense), but they claimed that their company has dealt with this issue hundreds of times which is really quite concerning! I pointed the person having trouble towards their Microsoft account for the key and this guy got really angry about it. Maybe because he saw a revenue stream disappear, maybe he just realised he'd screwed up on hundreds of customers - not really sure. I sent him a link to the MS documentation and left him to his tantrum.

I tried everything and none of them worked. Every time I tried to log into the account I needed the page would come up as unresponsive on all of the devices I used. It wont even let me link the device to the account that's on it. Can anyone tell me what to do. I have no way so far to even attempt in getting my data off of my laptop.
It's a stab in the dark, but if the website isn't working you could try accessing it using the browser's' Incognito/InPrivate mode to rule out caching/cookie problems - particularly if the device is normally used with another account.

Is there a video if the bitlocker is locked, but your okay with losing old data and want to go ahead and wipe it all back to factory level reset?
I haven't made one, but if you search for a video about installing Windows from a USB drive there should be plenty out there.

How do you get to your Bitlocker key in first place? Why would you need to do what you did mentioned if you know your key..
Thankfully, I had the key saved but didn't realized that the key was 48 caracters long! It would be very useful to know that the blue screen will show you the "Recovery Key ID" which is alphanumeric. The key is only numbers, 48 of them😂
What if I cant also access my microsoft account and forgot the details for recovery?
If you can't revert a change, you don't have the recovery key, and you've forgotten the login details for your accounts as well... then you don't have many options left.
If you have a backup of the system, restoring that is the best bet. If you don't have a backup, either: you're probably looking at reinstalling Windows and losing anything on the drive.

I think I've come across that before... log in to onedrive.live.com/ using the same account. If you haven't used your OneDrive in a while it can enter a frozen state and this prevents you retrieving BitLocker keys. You should get prompted to unfreeze it after logging in.
I understood the first option, where something foreign or different might be in the system during startup and I realized my external SSD was connected to my pc, so I shut it down, removed the hard drive and then restarted it and everything was back to normal
