Well, given your love of literary classics, I'm sure you merely overlooked this quote from C.S. Lewis:
“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

MilitanT07 Newsflash, comics in the 40s and 50s where Superman utters “I’ll save the day...and, don’t do drugs kids”, is not an accurate representation of current comics. Superheroes and non-superhero comic characters now have pathos, moral ambiguities, experience real-issues from our own real world, tackles issues or racial segregation, fascism, crime ect. Now this doesn’t make comics “grown up”( as you may put it), by default, but the way you probably picture comics is probably a misinterpretation of what most, but not all comics are in a post-modern world

    • @writingcooper7900
      @writingcooper7900 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

MilitanT07 You can make very strong arguments that the ideas presented in comics aren’t simple. You’re talking about a medium with thousands of titles. As far as easy to read, complexity of language is not the same as complexity of ideas. Anyone who has read Michael Eric Dyson knows that.

Even if you don't saying your glad Stan Lee is dead... it's still disrepectfull to use the news of his death to bring all your hate to a categorie of people you hate for stupid, supperficial, and yes, childish reason.
Comic book are not litterature... but it's still a form of art, some called it the 8th art or something, I don't know. In fact, many people calls some comic book "Graphic novel", because stupid supperficial people give the comic book such a bad name associate to children that when they do something actually realy profond and adult, they have the need to not call it comic book.
Super hero movie are not always great cinema, but can be, the batman movies (Burton and Nolan), Logan, The Incredibles, Spider-man into the spider-verse and the Sam Raimi Trilogy, Chronicles, Kick Ass, Unbrakable, V for Vendetta, Darkman, The Richard Donner Superman, the Guillermo Deltoro Hellboy.
Those who need to grow up are those who still in their teenage years and refuse everything that look like kid stuff to concentrate on "adult" stuff. Real adult are those who's not ashame of the stuff they like.
And every argument you ignore it with a bully respond like "Now you have pubycare" or "you're not Iron Man". Showing that the intelectuel one is not the one that put a suit and a cravat just because other "adult" does it.
"All comic book are the same, someone who don't have power get them" Congrats, you just prooves you know nothing about Comic book, because many don't have this promess. Freaking Batman, superman and Wonder Woman don't have this promess, and they are the most popular super heros in the world.
Even the example you took don't work. The glowing thing of Iron Man is not something he have to find, the Spider-man one neither.
It's even more a faillure to see a pretending comedian who reject something that looks ridiculous.
And see that you have your list of "adult author", allow me to do the same : Read Dark Night Returns, read Superman Red Son, Read Watchmen, Read The Killing Joke, Read V for Vendetta, Read Black Hole, read Mauss, read Persepolis.
What your doing is the equivalant of saying "Books are for kids, readers are stupid to like Goosebump, Twilight or Eragon"
You just took peaking exemple, with that, you can make everything stupid.
Maybe the problem is not comic book or fans, but the fact that you just Don't want to read them because you're afraid to be a kid. And that's more childish than having a statue of a characters you love and respect the ideology… or as you called it to make comic book fan childish : Dolls.
And yes, people said that Shakespear was childish, people like Alexandre Pope said it. Same thing for the others, you just have to google search to see it. It's not because you grew up in a circle of people who think it's great piece of littérature than at their time they wasn't criticise by ignorant like you.
"video game are destroying video game" okay, now you just fear mongering. "Video game cause violence, destroy life, blablabla"
It's not video game that destroy mariage, it's bad Relationship. If the guy prefered video game to his wifes, that his problem. And what's even the point ? We where talking comic book right ? Or just an old man saying old man things "kids this days with their Howard the duck and their Fortnite"

Plus, why should they be an age where your not allow to enjoy good stories with good characters and inventive promise ?

Peter David wrote a response to your words Bill.
    Peter Davids statement.
“Bill Maher has informed us, both on Twitter and again last night, that comic books are for kids and that fans of them are basically stunted individuals who are unable to accept adulthood.
    So let’s talk about fans.
Fans love to argue. They are particularly big on arguing who their heroes can defeat. And periodically they gather in large crowds, sometimes numbering over 50,000. They pay ridiculous entry fees to get in, and many of them dress up like their favorites. In the places where they gather, they cheer on their respective faves, chant together, eat and hang together. They buy a ton of merchandise, dropping hundreds of dollars at a time. And if they’re lucky, they get autographs and go home happy. Hell, on rare occasions they even attend parades dedicated to their heroes.
    And that’s just Mets fans.
It’s also Yankees fans, and Phillies fans, and Dodgers fans, and Jets and Giants fans, and Knicks fans, and so on throughout the country.
Hell, Bill Maher even profits off it, since he bought a minority share of the Mets in 2012.
And all these games…they involve balls. Isn’t that interesting? Large ones, small ones, that get bounced or hit or thrown. Balls, which are-as you know-one of the favorite toys of babies.
Yet interestingly no one, not even the profiting Bill Maher, ever accuses sports fans of being juvenile. Of being overgrown children. Get a whole bar riled up about Yankees versus Red Sox and no one is going to say, “My God, grow the hell up.”
That’s because, as Neil Gaiman pointed out, if you have stories told via words alone, that’s books and the realm of adults. Have pictures by themselves and that’s art, and also for adults. But the moment you combine words and pictures, assholes believe that that makes it entertainment purely for children.
I’ve said this before but it bears repeating: comic books aren’t juvenilia. Comic books are modern myths. The definition of a myth is something that is defined within its own essence. If you ask someone, “Who is Gomez Addams?” they will reply, “He’s a character created by cartoonist Charles Addams.” IF you say, “Who is Superman?” people will likely respond, “He’s a superhero, the last son of Krypton, with the secret identity of Clark Kent.” In the same way that if you ask who Hercules is, you’ll be told that he is a half-god born of Zeus having an affair with a mortal. You don’t put it in context of its creation; you define it as itself. People who find Spider-Man fascinating are just as valid and adult in their interests as someone who studies Arthurian legend. The fact that it’s happening in modern time and we know who the creators are doesn’t make it any less mythic.
Nor is the multi-billion dollar success of their movies proof of their crossover appeal, according to Maher. “They’re all the same!” he declares, asserting that ALL comic book movies are about superheroes fighting over “glowy” things (like athletes fighting over a ball, remember.). The short answer is, Yeah, right, “Black Panther” is just like “Wonder Woman” (neither of which involved anything glowing.). The longer answer is, Yeah, right, superheroes fighting over glowing things is sure an accurate description of Men in Black. Or Road to Perdition.. Or Kingsmen. Or V for Vendetta. Or From Hell. Or 300, Sin City, American Splendor, Atomic Blonde, Ghost World,Dredd, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, and on and on.
BUT, Maher further asserts, comics aren’t literature. Well, let’s figure that out. The dictionary definition of literature is: written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit. So what’s lasting merit? It seems reasonable to assume that it’s obvious: something that lasts. That transcends generations. So since Action Comics #1, which was produced over eighty years ago, still has resonance, that would seem to satisfy the definition, as does Spider-Man who was created fifty-five years ago. But perhaps it’s deeper than that. Perhaps to be literature, it must be critically acclaimed. Like Watchmen was when it won the Hugo. Like Sandman when it won the Bram Stoker award. Like Maus was when it won the Pulitzer.
How many Pulitzers do you have on your shelf, Bill?
I’m not pissed off with Maher because he went off on a rant about fans. God knows I’ve done that myself. I’m pissed off because he went off on a rant that was factually wrong, demonstrably inaccurate, and incredibly unfair. His words come from ignorance, and I wish to God he would do something, anything, to educate himself.”

Also many comicbooks are aimed specifically for adults. Garth Ennis for example writes for adults. I wouldn't want my kids reading any of his works until they were older.

Don't act as though the guys who don't read comics are reading great literature. Most of them just don't read at all. And if I see one more man who met his soulmate in a woman 20 or 30 years his junior I'm going to scream.
And don't even start with the "video games ruin marriages" gambit. Men paying too much attention to something (or someone) else and neglecting their spouses has been a recipe for disaster since the beginning of time. Only the names have changed.

First up, D&D is pretty cool, but I find it significantly more stimulating than comic books... you have to be imaginative and creative, social, plan well, all in all it is one of the best games out there for developing useful traits.
Comic books, as far as I'm aware (I've only really watched the Hollywood films, maybe they're dumbed down compared to the paper versions but that's not a defense I've seen many comic book fans claiming yet), do not tend to demand the same from you. Good literature leaves real ambiguity, acres of space for your own moral personal interpretations. The closest I've seen superheros coming to this is the Nolan Batman films, but even there the overarching cause and need to fight a definite bad guy keeps it fairly grounded. And there's the problem. A superhero needs a world-destroying villain of some description to defeat, giving you almost religious overarching morals of good and evil to stay grounded in. Real life is rarely that simple.

Try Twice Like mice Well, like Bill, you're categorizing comic books as just being about superheroes or stories of good vs evil. That's not the case. There are plenty of comic books about other topics. More independent and creative stories out there as well. In regards to superhero stories: the movies definitely have to simplify somethings simply because there are decades of superhero stories so they sometimes have to truncate certain stories and ideas. You mentioned the Nolan Batman films as the only superhero movies with ambiguity but I'm surprised Captain America: Civil War constantly gets overlooked. The film has plot holes and leaps in logic of course but it shows our heroes have the morals challenged when they are forced to confront the consequences of their actions and the villain of the film comes from a human place that doesn't paint him as an evil man trying to destroy the world. One thing I hate about superhero movies (they've been fixing it more recently) is how they always kill the villains off. While heroes and villains die in the comics too, the villains are mostly sent to jail (where they eventually always escape). Comics alow us to spend just as much time with the villains as the heroes. Something superhero movies rarely succeed at. In comics we know where the villain is coming from and see how they can be the heroes of their own stories. Sometimes they even get a series from their point of view...

All comic book movies are about “people fighting over a shiny thing.”
Congratulations Maher, you discovered that genres have tropes. You might as well complain about Westerns always having men in cowboy hats shooting at each other.
As someone who has studied Shakespeare and Dickens, I can say that anyone who attempts to disparage modern storytelling by comparing them to the old masters, don’t know what they are talking about. Shakespeare wrote sex comedies and supernatural thrillers. He wrote stories for the people in the pits as well as the people in the galleries. He was even criticized by his peers for “mixing the vulgar with verse, kings with commoners, fairies with mortals.”
Dickens wrote stories of rugged heroes who were easy to sympathize with, and dastardly villains whom were easy to jeer. His stories were serialized in popular magazines published on a monthly basis. He wanted to keep his readers interested from month to month so he made certain to end each chapter with a cliffhanger. I wonder what medium that resembles?

Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

Punisher is all about a psychotic veteran who brutally murders people on a quest to avenge his dead wife and kids, clearly he played too many violent videogames and never grew up. I think that if you actually looked up the history and variety of styles of books, I think you would learn a lot and find some good reads. If you into nonfiction at all (from spaghetti western movies to romance novels to B-movies/cult classic), they have those comics. They are just a particular way to tell a story and whenever you can tell a story, you can make it as "adult" as you want. Also it's super cheap of Bill to go after super-hero books and just throw in all graphic novels into one dump. "Mouse" by Art Spilbergman is a comic book and it's all about the holocaust. Also, Bill Maher's always gonna make a little money by acting triggered about "what the kids are into these days," so while a fight like this isn't a waste of his time, it's probably a waste of everybody else's.

Anyone notice how he completely left out the fact that people absolutely roasted Shakespeare in his time? For someone who prides himself on how learned he believes himself to be (and I’m sure he is in reality), he really doesn’t understand what he’s talking about. If he did, he would realize that while there are many comics which are in fact trash, the truly great ones like V for Vendetta, Watchmen, The Sandman, Dark Knight Returns, Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, Swamp Thing, and many others strike a chord with people for a reason. For someone who sees himself as being so in tune with the average person because of how much he knows, he’s really quite out of touch. And that is coming from someone who loves comics, is on the Dean’s List, has been a youth counselor in rehabs, worked with the disabled, and is on track for an MPH and MBA. Still sad I’m alive?

Plays which, ironically, are highly praised today. However, as time went on Shakespeares popularity among the people and critics grew.
