      What bill doesn’t mention, and you apparently don’t know, is the fact that Iran HAD a democratically elected president until 1953, when the United States backed a coup to reinstall the monarchy of the shah, who then went on to kill and quash any opposition voices.
      The citizens finally got tired of the dictatorship and overthrew it in favor of the voices that promised them (but failed to deliver) a better life.
      Just think, women wore Western fashions with no head covers, drove cars and walked the avenues freely.

      "`Umar bin Al-Khattab used to say to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) "Let your wives be veiled" But he did not do so. The wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) used to go out to answer the call of nature at night only at Al-Manasi.' Once Sauda, the daughter of Zam`a went out and she was a tall woman. `Umar bin Al-Khattab saw her while he was in a gathering, and said, "I have recognized you, O Sauda!" He (`Umar) said so as he was anxious for some Divine orders regarding the veil (the veiling of women.) So Allah revealed the Verse of veiling. (Al-Hijab; a complete body cover excluding the eyes). Everyone should listen to Yasmine Mohammed’s conversation with Sam Harris, his podcast episode #175, “Leaving the Faith”. She chokes up at one point and thanks him for making her feel *seen* with his TED talk. There is a real tension between privileging religious tolerance and prioritizing gender equality. Let’s not resolve it by taking the wrong side! We can disagree with Islam’s ideas without being racist, but we can’t tolerate religious practice without allowing others to severely curtail the freedoms of and in many cases hurt women. FGM is actually scary common in certain communities. Stand up for women!

      Christian sects, such as Fundamentalist Mormons, often treat women poorly. Similarly, Benedictine College's Harrison Butker holds views on women that are as restrictive as those of some radical Muslims or Orthodox Jews. For instance, Orthodox Judaism requires women to wear wigs to cover their hair, a practice with origins in ancient traditions. Historically, Catholic women were also required to cover their heads in church, and some Catholics advocate for a return to this practice. Women are even segregated at the Wailing Wall. These practices are common across many religions, although there are liberal Muslims who advocate for more progressive views on gender.
      However, these issues should not be used as arguments to justify the Israeli apartheid state or its actions. People around the world are protesting against Israel and Netanyahu's policies.

    Visited Saudi Arabia ~15 years ago for professional reasons and witnessed first-hand women walking fully covered in black robes (don't know the name of the clothing, don't want to learn it). And I mean ALL women, not just the local ones. Every woman in the plane we arrived on, as soon as it landed, switched to wearing this.
    It was gut wrenching. I suddenly realized that many things that I considered as a given, being born and raised in Europe, are simply not. And with that, how lucky we are now in the West. We were not always like this. 500 years ago we were burning women "because they are witches". But some parts of the world are doing similar things RIGHT NOW.

      This whole world is hell for women, and the West is the most habitable place, even if it isn't perfect. So, yes. You should be grateful that you weren't born in a place where women are treated worse than cattle. You should be grateful that you are allowed to show your face in public and not beaten by your husband whom you were forced to marry at the age of 9.

That genocide Includes the utter annihilation of the women and children you care about, and the entire infrastructure that could possibly sustain human life for women, men, or children.
      I hope you see that Maher is dangling gender laws of governments in entirely not-Palestine countries (many only in power with active US support, btw) to take attention away from the horror being carried out by Israel /US right in front of us, with our tax dollars. His writing staff, presumably younger and with access to more recent information than his romanticized Exodus-novel view of the world, really ought to save this guy from himself.
      For starters his more educated staffers could remind their Islamophobic boss that for many decades the main org representing all Palestinians, the PLO, was a SECULAR, nationalist organization. They had many Marxist groups in their coalition, for f’s sake.
      It was only after that coalition caved to US/Israel bad-faith promises, making life for Palestinian women and men even more of a living hell than their already hellish and illegal conditions of occupation, that most Palestinians turned to Hamas. It was the only group that was still fighting for basic Palestinian safety and sovereignty.

      I have spent several weeks in Iran. Having visited approx. 60 - 70 countries over 60 odd years I class Iran among the friendliest, if not The friendliest I've visited. Pleasant, charming people who love to have visitors into their homes. A Chinese travel writer (female), who wrote for Lonely Planet, told me that Iran was her favourite of all the countries she'd visited.

      @gerrygallen5911 Surely iran is a beautiful place, especially if you visit it as a tourist. But also the government killed almost 1500 people in the streets in just one summer on protesting against mandatory hijab. I doubt this isn't something someone as a tourist would be shown to.

      What they always neglect to mention is that the munitions being used to kill Palestinians are provided by the US. Along with billions in weapontry and ammo, the US also gives Israels billions annually. With the exception of may be Egypt because they do get some money, the US has little to no influence on those other countries. Some are considered advesaries!

    This is Bill Maher’s most important monologue ever. Because it is about the rights of literally 50% of the worlds population: women. In most western countries they are treated equally (although there are still some thugs who not do so because of patriarchy opinions) and in the majority of the world they are still oppressed or do not have exact equal rights. Even in Japan there is still a hierarchy thing going on in the work place and women have to follow a man, even when he does the same job at her, he is more worth and the first to speak. It’s ludicrous to me that these college protesters are so blind while claiming so called higher education for themselves at institutions the government pays to spread these false ideas.

      I’m not sure it’s the colleges’ fault. They have been slow to respond, then they overcompensated for their prior weakness. These ideas come from social media. I believe they are planted to encourage divisiveness and weaken Biden, honestly.

      First. I've asked a few women in Japan about whether that sort of thing still goes on, and they've all told me it doesn't anymore.
      Secondly, the patriarchy thing is a myth. Yes, there are men in the West who are thugs and treat women poorly, but as mogznwaz pointed out, they're just bullies. It's not part of society itself. Also, there are plenty of women who are bullies, and we (Western society) have actually over-corrected the problems from pre-first-wave feminism.

    Question, why is it that comedians seem to have the most rational take on society? It’s not just Bill Maher, but the whole industry.?

    • @ugib8377
      @ugib8377 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Comedy has frequently been a medium used to talk about serious issues. It doesn't matter your view on the topic, if the person on stage talking about it can make you laugh.
      That and comedians don't typically check themselves to make sure they're not offending anyone. If they did their content would be bland and neutered.
      Combine these two things and you have very real, human takes. Not watered down pc whispers.

    • @karlsfakelaugh
      @karlsfakelaugh 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Some comedians are curious (always asking why) and observers of human behavior. They identify truths, commonalities and hypocrisies to get laughs. However, some comedians are angry and mean, reinforce stereotypes and try to shock for laughs. Not all are equal.

      Comedians are gifted in recognizing ridiculousness and bullshit, so they can make fun of it. Not uncoincidentally, they also tend to have a sense of humor about themselves. Conversely, people who can't take a joke also have no perspective on the radical bullshit they promote.

    • @thesoundsmith

      Intelligent people without the power to control the situation but that can see through the bullshit and make you laugh, rather than cry or scream in anger are VERY valuable to society.
