  • 4AGE Black Top powered KP61 Starlet Rally Build.
    While there isn't much Barry Brandon (aka Brandon Barry) can't do underwater, in this weeks Vlog he runs us through where he is at with his dry land built 1984 KP61 Toyota Starlet rally car. With most of the work so far being done to the rear of the car he gives us a quick rundown on the 4-link suspension and Watts linkage he has opted for in order to squeeze 15" rims under the car which also required a lot of cutting and the fitment of wheel tubs to accomplish but all of this did allow for an extension of the wheelbase at the same time.
    The power steering setup from a 2010 Toyota is discussed including the interesting point of how Toyota still uses the same spline making it an easy fit and why he as chosen to position his RaceTech RT4100HR seat so far back into the cabin. The position for the Life Racing D5 Dash is already good to go while the car waits for the front end to be finished and a Black Top 20 valve 4AGE to drop under the hood.
    At this stage the 4AGE was chosen due to the aftermarket parts support helping keep costs down, the 1.6L capacity keeps the car in a class relative to the level of the build and they're quite simply great engines.
    An ECU hasn't been sourced yet and there is a lot of wiring to be done down the line too, but it's all starting to come together for Brandon and he's looking forward to hitting some rally and Hillclimb events around New Zealand.

    KP61 was one of the fastest car on the mountain especially narrow road. 35 years ago, my 18 years boyfriend had it and was driving it at Mt Rokko at night. I was only 17 and used his KP61 for my driving lesson, I learned very quickly. I miss Japan.

    Genuine question = I know it looks better but is there an actual reason everyone orientates the dimple die swage inwards on parts? Especially like in the cross brace under the car as you have here?
    I see it a lot and wonder (especially with an off road vehicle that will be smashing through dirt and mud etc) if it would be better to have them pressed outward allowing endless evacuation of the rail instead of becoming a perfectly designed area to collect/trap debris and moisture etc.?
    Obviously aesthetically, inward looks much nicer but sure function would outweigh form under a car?
    Not judging, genuinely interested?

    I was down in the workshop a few months ago before lockdown, with Andres mate Nick. I had a brief look at your starlet, I find this a very interesting build As I am also building a track starlet. Although mine will be powered by a 1UZFE. I hope you don’t mind, I am going to copy your watts link setup. I am very interested to see some more of this project!

    One of my favorite rally moments was a finish toyota starlet( group H) on tarmac. I think it was a 1.6 and going 12000rpm or so. It was destroying anything in its class but for some wrc, 911 gt3 and some other crazy group H cars. I think the starlet finished 7th overall

  • @zeroyon4562

    What's going on with the slot at the rear of the car? Was that just to slide the floor in and out during fab work making it easier? Is he grafting on another rear panel later? For the body kit, will the car get fibreglass flares or will he fab steel ones to meet the wheel arch extensions? Oh and one more, the gearbox, sequential or some kind of T50?
    Apologies for all the questions! I love a good KP rally car.

    Why did you decide against a triangulated 4 or 3 link configuration? Interested in hearing more about the damper assemblies as we will be doing something similar with an s30 Datsun chassis.

    • @2011metalmaniac
      @2011metalmaniac 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This setup is very common on classic rally escorts. 4 link and 3 and links are adequate for straight line drag racing or off slow off roading. In rally the suspension is working extremely hard trying to keep the wheels on the ground and maintain traction

    • @NoClassic
      @NoClassic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      2011metalmaniac I don’t understand your comment given that what is show in the video is a 4 link configuration.

    • @2011metalmaniac
      @2011metalmaniac 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NoClassic yes you are correct however it is a parallel 4 link set up not a triangulated type. A watts linkage has better control over lateral movement of the axle in cornering. There would be no need to triangulate the 4 link if the axle has a watts linkage

    • @NoClassic
      @NoClassic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@2011metalmaniac Yes I understand the function of a watts link and triangulation in terms of axle positioning. Your initial comment was confusing.

    • @2011metalmaniac
      @2011metalmaniac 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@NoClassic ye re reading my answer i can see. i was trying answer your original question. In summary then the lateral control of a watts linkage is superior to the lateral control a triangulated system or 3 link set up could ever offer as those later systems allow for some side flex which you dont want in a rally car.
